I love hearing Brown talking about these issues. The guy’s a sommity
I'd be very careful with expressions like "murderous history". As a German I have to say I take exception to Kampfner using that term in his article in the Guardian. The fact that what was committed was murder is true for basically every war ever ever fought or are we calling that act patriotic cause everybody agrees on it or it is to the benefeit to whoever wages it? In fact, there are quite a few nations who share that dubious "accolade" with Germany and have killed, raped and plundered on their way to more land, riches etc. If you compare that to the holocaust, the intention to me is quite similar, i.e. eliminate any resistance to what you want to achieve. The only difference to the Germans: they did it openly, in an orchestrated manner, and you cannot even call it imperialist because it happened within our own borders in central Europa and in the 20th century. So why not call the English, the French, the Turks, the Mongols, the Greeks, or any tribe or nation that has every waged an aggressive interventionist conflict against another throughout history, and as a special case, the Russians and Americans murderers from now on? So Germany has a murderous history like many others and Israel is about to create its own. Are we all happy now? I grew up in the 60s, thankfully 20 years after the war but not late enough not to be lambasted by the aftermath and the horrible memories of the genocide (in view of that nobody speaks about the people dying because of or during WWII itself, streange). As kids we showed the V sign to US soldiers, watched anti-war movies and rooted against Germany all the while carrying a dark shadow with us. I felt it looming over me until I turned 50 (When I finally decided it is enough) and I think that should be plenty pennance for a person having to deal with such a heritage. I know it is a difficult thing dealing with that history in modern times, but like with all other conflicts, no matter where you put them on the scale of atrocity, it will pass into history and be remembered like the invasion of Europe by the Romans, i.e. as a fact of history.
Just got this book today and a few hours later I’m nearly halfway through, I can’t put it down! Both Bevins books are incredibly well researched and enlightening. They explore such important questions for the moment in history we’re living through.
Update. This book and Kampfner's opinions are now totally out of date. Germany became dependent on Russian energy and are now seemingly doomed economically.
Doomed economically? Have you read too many outdated books?
fascinating!!!
six languages not unusual? wow
I thought Finntopia was due to having a 90% plus union membership rate of workers versus 10% union membership in the U.S. Constant Vigiliance on Inequailty? that's awesome! the U.S. would FREAK OUT if there's any mention of inequality - look what happened to Bernie Sanders. "working class jobs pay really really well. Middle class jobs don't pay much more." Fascinating!
Oil 🛢️economy is going to be non existent by 2030 .... With Brazil🇧🇷 and india🇮🇳 going ethanol based ice cars🚘🚘
Thus bare bones, what is going on with England (this collapse in slow motion). The nation in a way deserves it willy nilly, just like all the rest of euro-nations - some clearly on their fringe or tethering edge (economics, politics, climate, recession, energy etc etc). England especially because it was the last rotten euro-savage empire to mooch the rest of the earth for 200 years. Now that job is done by America and China. Game over Not So Great Britania!
China... mooching‽ China's barely out of the starting gate.
Fantastic interview, you earned my sub.
Thanks very much, Jack.
Thank you so much for hosting this :)
Thanks for watching!
Many thanks to Rebecca for this thoughtful, informed, common sense take on gambling and what needs to be done about it: reframing it as a harmful-consumption/public-health activity. Her views on Gibraltar, in particular, are spot on in my experience.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
"it's male"..... what a ridiculous argument.
Really helpful for our assignment (my task) T-T, although i have to listen his explanation over and over cuz, im not expert in english language. But really, thank you.
Rest assured man, every dead are they who still yell long live pki when being confronted by military and people with authority, still most of them are end up jail. Pki kill many families and relative of the people who hold onto the ideology pancasila which is spritual socialism, while pki are greedy sadist socialism.
Make pełe great again...
Or was it Fucking boom facebook...
Great video !
Ridiculous listening to this in the current Germany, as the regime turns more into fascism everyday, with problems unsolved like energy supply, the destruction of the middle class and the destructive migration policy. Finis Germania.
Thank you to interviewer for doing a great job. You asked good questions, listened and allowed us to hear your guest.
Thank you!
Germany ,the country ,language and history is slandered since more thant 130 years. 1886 Saturday review ..germania esse delendam.. means germany must be destroyed, reminds me to the bristish Hungerblocade during and half year after WW1 with appr.. 800.000 german victims ,only one example. Meantime we know all...germany is not guilty alone for the outbreak of WW1 which was than the reason for WW2 .. nobody cares about . The people here are manipolated on guilt for the next 1000 years and countries around us helping every day to inform us and the World about 33 - 45 But beside this ... the World is singing in german Beethovens 9 ode to Joy WHEN Schiller wrote this famous lyrics... Freude schöner Götterfunken...and be umbraced MILLIONS in the World... the Brits sang an still singing today...Rule Britannia.... And most of the germans are not a little bit proud on Beethoven, Schiller, Mozart and orhers given to the world...the believe in collective guiltiness as they are educated after Nürnberg. There is still something wrong in Danmark...
In short this book spells out the capitaliism really does dig its own grave !
Andrew Adonis is a good historian & Bevin a very important man in making present day Britain.
this Guy is genious from DE
in which year did you were Korrespondent in Bonn?
What is interesting is what is missing - the refugee crisis 2015. Germany basically defused a serious crisis to europe and at least for some time made this thread last page news.
I ADORE READING
cute guy
Hi, Huge Fan of Jason Moore. Very instructive conversation. Thanks
No problem Linda. Greatly enjoyed it, and I'm glad to hear you found it useful.
Excelente!!! Thanks
Really fascinating discussion, that was far too short, particularly when discussing the Age of series. Thank you for this.
Thanks for watching Bill.
Great insights here, a proper considered understanding of where systemic lack of empathy might come from
I would take issue with the comments on Hong Kong. Having been a HK resident
I have been resident for many years and present outcome has been forced by outsiders.
Good job!
Thanks!
I like Kampfner, but his comments on Trump being a fascist are incorrect. Fascism and "anti-democratic" have overlaps but are not the same- Trump is the latter.
I guess that depends: ua-cam.com/video/1M6CXhUS-x8/v-deo.html
I'm listening to this as an audiobook, and kind of realizing this year that the American empire is crumbling, and I'm only on chap 2 but its really interesting so far
not just the US empire. googlescholar "biological annihilation"
But anybody got Jenny Kleemans channel, radioshow and website?
www.jennykleeman.com
Great channel. Tried to find Jenny Kleemans YT channel and stumbled upon this channel.
Thanks!

Well-conducted interview, thanks. Reviews I saw suggested Evans’ biography of Hobsbawm was a deeply competent work of disciplined piety fulfilling a commission, and perhaps mainly that, but Evans really brings Hobsbawm alive in this interview; it’s rekindled my interest in Hobsbawm’s work, and it’s made me want to read the book which I’m ordering now!
Thanks Jeffrey!
Thank you so much for this book and exposure of what is going on in Saudi Arabia and MBA
I am German, born a short time after WWII Lol... the observation of the 2006 championship and acceptance of patriotism here is so true 🤣 At the time seeing cars with German flags was a bit strange, but it added some nice color-spots to a beautiful summer. It has been a really relaxed time and nobody would have confused patriotism or the support for a good German team with nationalism. I do have a small problem with the depiction of the AfD. Of course there are a few madmen in this party. Each new party attracts these fringe elements. The (big) majority of the voters are basically disappointed conservatives who 15 years ago would have voted CDU. They didn't change a lot - the CDU has. Good interview.
Mainly agree. The latest AfD decission to make the "wing" central part of the party shows, where they want to go.
in respect to the AfD it WAS a protest option for disgruntled CDU Members in 2013-2016. From then onwards the AfD has clearly hardened and radicalised their position as racist anti democratic right wing extremist party. About 40% of party members support the "Flügel", the right wing extremist faction of the party, wich forms the largest faction inside the AfD
Exelent interview! great! cheers!
He has spent years trying to overturn democracy
I wish you had delved more with Richard into the nature of Hobsbawm's Marxism. In the biography and, unfortunately, in this interview Evans seems to scant much of the theoretical discussions/debates that preoccupied much of Eric's life, substituting instead a slew of superfluous biographical minutiae. Hobsbawm's actual reading of Marx, and how vastly different it was to the various currents of reading Marx that were on offer during his era (Althusser, Della Volpe, Dobb, etc) is huge piece of his life. In fact, Hobsbawm's most influential essays -- On Antonio Gramsci, the origins of Capitalism, Marx's Grundrisse/Pre-Capitalist Economic Formations and On the Labour Question -- were not just explicit interventions in historical materialism, but were transformative to his fundamental understanding of capitalism as a mode of production, which is the great theme of his entire body of work. Nevertheless, Excellent Interview !
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. And you're right, that's certainly something that would have been worth delving into. Unfortunately, I'm not well-versed in Hobsbawm's in-depth writings on Marxism, although I did enjoy much of How to Change the World. I'll certainly look into those essays you note.
Ever thought of creating a new party? Everything you say makes sense
I think it would be brilliant to go to America and give a lecture be careful on the way home
I do hope Martin Rees is keeping up with developments being rolled out by ‘To the Stars Academy’. The alien interaction with this planet is now being revealed by the US. He will no doubt be astounded that he has been completely wrong for decades, but I’m sure as a seeker of the truth pleased to be updated with information of this important nature. Interesting times indeed.
Good work Ryan. More please.
Thanks, Rafe!
