Mmm. Wise, this one is. Dispose of the postmodernist nonsense and indulge the power of thoughtful narrative. Fantasy is all good and well, and I recommend as someone who grew up on Dragonlance. But for a real mind-opening shock, read the classics. You'll learn about humanity and history in ways you didn't realize were being recorded. In those old novels you'll find astonishing history, humor, and thought. And sometimes you'll realize after reading something - you'll realize that even today we're still struggling with [this or that], but it's really an ages-old debate, and only [this much] progress has been made! My favorite is 1800s fiction. The whole Western World was blooming with literary masters. From the highly structured (Dickens, Dostoyevsky) to the experimental (Twain, Poe), it's a treat for the mind, and a journey full of great characters. For anyone suffering from depression due to technology, a well-written novel is definitely therapeutic. You can feel it as you read - your mind opens up in different ways. From time to time, you'll also stumble upon original character archetypes that are still used today, and that's so cool... you feel like you discovered something nobody else noticed, and you'd generally be correct. There's plenty to love in all centuries. Hemingway is a writer like no other. Heck. Real literature is a moveable feast for the mind and soul. End of ramblings... I just get excited when the subject is up and I can freely extoll the benefits of reading without feeling too out of place.

I stopped reading self-help books when I realized they were all the same. While they were initially helpful in providing new perspectives, I learned they had the same ideas but written differently. Even though I think it's great to explain similar ideas in easier-to-understand ways, it becomes an issue when that is all someone reads. I recently started reading philosophy, books on spirituality, fiction, and non-fiction books (ie. science books and autobiographies). Those books have bigger impacts on me than ones telling me to better time manage, man-up, anything is possible, etc.

You are so right! I am reading a fantasy series right now and find myself finding so many parallels with my real life than when reading a self-help book. I identify much more woth some stories from the fantasy than with the very often exaggerated and unrelatable inpersonality of the self-help books. Fiction brings me much more insights and makes me think about different aspects of the human condition. My experience reading fantasy feels strangely validated now so thank you for the video!

95% of the things you learn in school is useless theoretical crap and barely any practical ones, and I am in engineering saying this. But going to uni shows that you are capable to go to the same place, doing the same thing, 4 years in a row consistently, can work with basic math and can handle significant stress once in a while. This is the bare minimum employers look for in an office worker. Most people will work jobs significantly different from their degree anyway and it proves again how useless univs are. But due to how the system work, it is extremely difficult to find cushy job without a degree and even you find one, you won't climb up the ladder anyway.

I disagree with the idea of skipping higher education and go straight for real world job. It depends a lot on what you want to do, to be a doctor or engineer you need proper education but if you plan to work construction or hospitality then further education become secondary task to boost your profile. I like that you discussed the social aspect of college, the higher education plays a significant role in developing social skill and good personal character. It is also true that you often don't get teachers that can inspire you as lecturer need to focus a lot on research than teaching cause that is how they can secure their job in university.

I’m a finance major and every business class has been taught by a former business owner, and accounting classes by CPAs or corporate controllers….i know not everyone’s experience is like this so I’m grateful to say the least. I actually began my college experience dreading it because all my friends left to 4 years but it was one of the best decisions that could have happened. I grinded on my art for 15 years, making drawings, writing poems. I never got any traction at all, I never got more than 2 or 3 likes. Maybe 5% got like 5 likes. For the longest time I believed that the sole act of creating was totally worth the time I sunk into it, but after a decade and a half I just couldn't bring myself to do it anymore. I couldn't help but feeling that everyone was snickering about my content. It broke me and I received no longer any pleasure in creating anymore. So I gave up. I went back to only consuming but I never give my attention to short attentionspan content like music, reels or gaming. I only read books (around 40pages) and one movie each day. And I must say, it's a peaceful life. But I have no regret trying to be a creator. It taught me patients, humbleness and resistance to failure. It learned me how to be myself and only myself. I need no approval to do what i want to do and be who i want to be, even though creating is no longer part of that. So keep up the good work. Even if it never turns out to be anything else than a hobby, it will push you to grow personally.

I once heard that you need to find a problem to solve and watch out if there's demand for it. I noticed that pattern in businesses a lot. They're not really aesthetic focused and perfect. It's sad that your business failed, but at least you have some experience at hand now for the future :D My parents once had a little business, and they always told me it has to be good quality, not pretty. As long as it's functional, it works. I understood what they meant but only now, I entirely grasp it. I get where you're coming from with that artist perspective. I've practiced those skills because they're my hobby. I think it was hard to continue once it became more serious, but I kept going and I love the skills I've developed. So I recommend writing small stories and little 15 minutes studies for writing and practice that if you haven't and are still interested, haha.

Interpersonal relationships require a degree of distance - this is the one that resonated the most with me. I think social media has romanticized a lot of how relationships/friendships should be and we have forgotten that there is a difference in how the world and people actually are and how we would wish for them to be - which creates heavy unrealistic expectations; realism vs idealism

I think the second point of protecting/prioritizing your peace is something most only learn in the later stages of life maybe in our 40s/50s or so because when we are younger we might need to go through those terrible phases in friendships & relationships to understand what kind of ones we really want that will actually help us.. but another thing is imo im not sure if we can live life by having each of our relationships or most of them be beneficial to our self-growth, it is desirable to have something like that, to wish/hope for that but not realistic

Most people who read self help books don’t want to help themselves, they just like to consume content that gives them the feeling of improvement. They read these books, but don’t ever pause to incorporate the ideas in them into their lives. It’s like trying to loose weight by reading healthy recipes, but never by actually going into a caloric deficit. But when you read good stories, you actually see the ideas play out and they are easier to digest. It’s the same reason why philosophical and moral teachings were most commonly told through parables and stories. It just makes it significantly easier to understand and internalise them.

I've also read "Mistborn" by Sanderson and Kelsier's journey is one I deeply relate to. However take any book from authors such as Adam Grant, Austin Kleon, Elizabeth Gilbert and much more and I highly doubt that you would be bored. It's the way the book is written and the ideas representation that makes any book intriguing or boring and not the genre. But hey that's my opinion.
