Old Atlanta Tells: West End Atlanta Gentrification
On Episode 3 we dive into the historic area of West End Mall in Atlanta. We walk the streets and discuss the gentrification going on in this area.
Old Atlanta Tells is a documentary series that tell the stories of so many people who have lived through gentrification here in Atlanta. Some people displaced by it, some hate it, some love it, some is benefiting and some don’t even understand it.
Old Atlanta is a term used by people who have been here to see Atlanta change and knows what was here before the changes. Some think of Cascade skating rink, some think of Marathon wings in Fairborn road, some think of Douglas High School some think of Mays high school.
The goal is for the viewers to feel and understand what comes with gentrification other than just new food and new developments.

I remember my mom just drop me off me my friends at magic and on Fridays we go to MBK It's teenagers club for teenagers back in 90s it's wasn't too far from Greenbrier..ohhh men I miss those days I swear I do so much fun ❤❤❤❤❤
making your city better
I've been in the West End since 2008. We are a community. My neighbors are amazing and caring. I am concerned about the increase in property taxes. My property taxes were $400 when I moved in and now, 15 years later, they are over $5000. That increase is something our seniors on fixed incomes cannot absorb and they are being forced out. I'll be right here sandwiched between two neighbors who have both been here more than 40 years. Westside!!
Any updates on the mall's redevelopment?
Can black people revitalize it this time? I really wanted to live here til someone told me how "bad" it was. The house I liked was gorgeous and I really couldve afforded it.
Georgia state i think is helping the community more than people think... technically The new GSU stadium which was called turner field which was the Braves Second Stadium, the first one was Atlanta Stadium across the street.
West end was very old neighborhood long before being a black neighborhood it was white too. Not much changed from the late 90s thru the 2000s
Magic Johnson owned that theater and the TGIFridays nearby in the 90s, also Cub Food Circut city.etc..
Long before Black folks lived in SW especially Greenbriar and Ben Hills Campbellton Road and Cascade it was a white neighborhood in the 50s and 60s white flight hit that area in the 70s
I grew up in Atlanta in the 90s on the eastside... Stone Mountain, Decatur...
Avis from Herndon homes... 5th ward
Because, one time, Atlanta ues to be a black city.
Yes! I attend Mount Carmel Baptist Church on Campbellton Rd, born @Mclendon Hospital off MLK Rd on Sharon Street.
They gentrified Reynoldstown, Cabbagetown, people’s town, Midtown, downtown Decatur, northside dr etc . All of memorial dr and Moreland Ave accept for the south parts of Moreland.
They gentrified the entire city old Atlanta was covered in projects back then. The ones downtown I remember was capital Homes, Grady Homes, Techwood Homes, Clark Howell Homes, Herndon Homes, Eagan Homes, U-Rescue Villa. Bedford Pines is the last projects on boulevard still standing. It was so many more damn projects.
How Is It after dark?
When I was living there, it was bad at night and day
