Reflection on Disputes Among Believers: A Call for Unity and Christ-like Humility The issue of disputes and divisions within the body of Christ, especially among those who preach the gospel, is a deeply concerning matter. It raises questions about whether we are truly living according to the doctrine we proclaim to the world. The Bible offers clear guidance on this, urging us to handle such matters with wisdom, humility, and in a way that glorifies Christ. 1 Corinthians 6:1 admonishes believers: "Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?" This scripture is an eye-opener, especially for those of us in the body of Christ. It challenges us to reflect on the values we uphold as Christians. Are we prioritizing the unity of the church and the gospel of Christ, or are we being driven by personal gain, greed, and worldly ambitions? The situation in Nigeria, known for its strong religious influence and spiritual leaders, brings this issue to the forefront. With so many fathers of faith present, one would expect greater efforts to mediate and resolve disputes among believers in line with biblical teachings. What Does the Bible Teach About Believers Going to Secular Courts? The Word of God calls us to resolve disputes among ourselves as believers. Paul, in 1 Corinthians 6:5, says: "I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? No, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?" This question challenges us to recognize the spiritual wisdom available within the body of Christ. God has equipped His people with the ability to discern and resolve matters in love, guided by the Holy Spirit. Taking disputes before unbelievers not only damages our testimony but also undermines the unity of the church. Furthermore, 1 Peter 2:21-24 reminds us of the example set by Jesus Christ: "Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously." Jesus modeled humility, forgiveness, and trust in God's righteous judgment. As followers of Christ, we are called to emulate Him, even when it means suffering wrong for the sake of unity and peace. Why Not Allow Ourselves to Be Wronged? Paul’s rhetorical question in 1 Corinthians 6:7 calls us to a higher standard of humility and trust: "Why do ye not rather take wrong? Why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?" While it may seem difficult to accept being wronged, this attitude reflects a Christ-like spirit that prioritizes the testimony of the church and the advancement of the gospel over personal vindication. Allowing ourselves to be defrauded does not mean we condone injustice, but it shows that we trust God to vindicate us and judge righteously (Romans 12:19). A Call for Spiritual Leadership This situation is indeed a sad reflection on the state of the body of Christ. It calls for the intervention of spiritual leaders-the fathers of faith-who can mediate and bring resolution in a godly manner. Leaders have a responsibility to guide believers in maintaining the unity of the Spirit and prioritizing the mission of Christ over personal interests. Moving Forward in Humility and Love As Evangelist Alonzo N. Perry, from Liberia, I urge us all to return to the foundational teachings of Christ. Let us lay aside pride, greed, and selfishness, and embrace the humility and love that Christ exemplified. The church must shine as a light in the world, reflecting the unity and wisdom of God, especially in matters of conflict. May we all seek reconciliation, forgive one another, and pursue peace, so that the gospel we preach will be authenticated by the lives we live. Let this be a call for introspection and a return to the heart of God’s will for His church. "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God." (Matthew 5:9)
