68 GTO Tear down
Переглядів 49510 місяців тому
The 68 GTO, was not salvageable. the more I started tearing down the GTO the more I realized this job was a lot more than I bargained for. The amount of work that would entail, rebuilding this car would have been longer than the original GTO. plus the space was limited because of the Chevelle that I have. I will find another project car down the road when I'm done with this GTO.

What would cause my wiper cowl to have a 1/2 of a inch gap at the firewall on the left side
Are you referring to the reveal on the firewall and the cowl panel? Or are you referring to the left cowl panel and the wiper cowl panel?

What version I need for the 1969 Buick Electra 225
Sorry for the late reply. I don't know what kind of breaks you're looking for. So I cannot answer that question. if you have a specific question. call Wilwood directly and talk to them. Thanks for leaving a comment. All the best
Awesome thank y!

So glad I found this channel currently! Got my hands on a 68 chevelle and this info has helped a ton

That pin is the stupidest design ever. Just tried for 20 minutes to wiggle it off (I did the other side no problem a couple weeks ago) and ended up cracking the plastic of my brake light :/ This tutorial did not help, but I appreciate at least from the comments knowing that I am not alone in my hatred for the pin. Death to terrible car designs.
I agree. Very frustrating, bad design. All they need to do is put a screw to maintain the break light. Sorry, that the video did not help. All the best
Great video. It really helped me. Thanks!
Glad to be of help
Are the rotors suppose to be a little loose prior to installing wheels?
There will be loose until you put the wheel on and tighten the lighter
Thanks for the help. I am building up a Mark Williams 9" for my 68 C10 with Wilwood brakes
Glad to help
Looks complicated. Gonna take it to dealership to get break light fixed
That is fine. If you are not comfortable talking on a task, you should have a professional to do it. Thanks for commenting. All the best
@classicrewind2715 I am going to buy bulb from Canadian Tire & my step son is going to help Me replace it. My female friends at work says it is easy to do. Wife says I make things harder than it really is.
@@HabsMike25 Let me know how it works out for you. All the best
@classicrewind2715 Well it was more easier than I thought. Step son helped me. Only thing that was a bit tricky was getting cover off after taking off the screws. It saved me a lot of money going to dealership which we know how sneaky they are which they would say you need so many things fixed even though you only want one thing fixed. Thanks
Glad you figured it out and saved some cash. All the best 👍
Mig weld it .030 silicone bronze 100%argon.

curious. do you happen to know what the length of the coil overs...with ride height
I did not adjust the ride height yet. I have no motor and interior in the car. With coil overs you can adjust any height you like. I hope this helps all the best
Thanks for sharing such a great and informative video. I recently did this same install with a Unisteer unit on my 1975 Trans AM. After a few days, I started to get a lot of fluid leaking out of the driver's side boot off the rack. I followed the recommended procedure to bleed the air out of the system, so I was surprised to have this occur. I have also discovered a lot of comments online regarding leakage from these Unisteer units. I am curious if you have you had any leakage issues with your Unisteer R&P?
Sorry for the late delay in responding. I am still in the building stage of the car. Have not put fluid in the system. hopefully, I will not have a situation like leakage. I've also heard a lot of bump steer with the unisteer R&P. Do you happen to have any bump steer with your unit? All The Best..
No bump steer that I noticed. I only had about three miles on the car before I put it back on the lift and pulled to R&P to send it off to Unisteer for repair. BTW, they are charging $350 for the repair and I pay shipping (about $100 each way.).
@DaveFaddis-u1x That's insane, they're charging you that much money for repairing their problems. They should have only charged you for shipping. Repairing it should have been their dime.. Keep in touch, let me know. All the best. Harry
So as usual you don't get what you pay for.
So True. Sometimes you have to make it the way you want it so it fits properly thanks for commenting. All the best
Hey I have a question when you put in your upper wiper cowl did you had to massage to fit?
No, my cowl panel went in very easily. The only problem was. I tried to fit the plastic vents, they did not fit properly. So now I have to make some kind of custom adapter to accept the plastic flange. I hope this helps. All the best...
I got quoted $450 for labor at the jeep dealership after attempting to do it myself from 2 other videos. This video was awesome. Thank you so much for saving me time and money, I got it done in less than an hour.
Awesome!! I'm glad that my video helped...
Very east to follow vid. On mine I have to replace the section under the filler panel also. Mice made a home in there and it didn't fair as well as yours. Now trying to find that is a struggle.
Hi. Are you talking about the panel underneath the trunk panel? I don't think they make that panel at all. You might have to make your own out of 16 gauge. I bought the top panel from OPG about 3 years ago. You have to be careful sometimes they send you out a Chevelle panel and it doesn't fit. All the best , Keep in touch
@@classicrewind2715 Yep that's exactly what I'm talkin about. I'm wondering if I could get 1968 Chevelle panel and modify it to work. Time will tell.
There's a place in Pennsylvania near Stroudsburg that has a 69 GTO. I don't know if it's the same package tray or not. You can call him. It's called Sebum in Stroudsburg
@@classicrewind2715 Thank you
Thanks for the tips
Glad to help..
I just found your videos on the GTO. I'm currently doing basically the same on a 1968 Lemans so your video's have been very helpful.
Awesome.. Glad to help
No hood tack or spoiler. Much cleaner. The mirrors you seek are 71-72 sport mirrors.
Sorry for the late response. I think the sport mirrors are really cool, much sleeker. I was still thinking of going with the spoiler what do you think?
My 68 is taking a ton of time as well. Midwest car. Lots of rust to repair. I did abc Mini tub, hellwig frame gusset kit. custom gussets and rear suspension work. New trunk floor, wheel houses are in. Alot more to go. I'm rolling the front fenders and modifying the inners to fit. And trimming that wheel opening heal like you are to clear larger front tires.
Your car sounds like mine. You are doing a lot of work just like mine. Keep going it's going to be awesome when you're done. I keep changing my mind, now I want to do original flush mount glass. If I decide to do that. it's going to be another month or so to complete. I didn't think of rolling the front fender wheel wells. That's a great idea. All the best... keep in touch
@@classicrewind2715 the top of the fender and inner will rub with wider wheels during compression. Thinking ahead and doing that now vs later. I like how flush mount looks. Over my skill and patience level. There's a company that sells oversized glass so you don't have to do the metal work but it's not cheap.
Yes definitely not cheap. That's why I'm thinking of using the original glass
Congratulations! your channel and work on the fro really has helped a n my 72 Chevelle
Thank you. Glad to help..
Thanks for filming this build. I’ve watched a lot of the videos on this as I am working on 68 chevelle SS and everything I am wanting to do you are doing! I appreciate the knowledge you are sharing! Keep it up.
Thank you. Glad to help. All the Best
Good video. I think I have the hideaway bucket brace because my headlights sit deeper in. If you found a place that carries the base for the fixed lights let me know.
Thanks To my knowledge no one produces those non Hideaway brackets anymore. I have an extra set but they're not in the best condition.
U put a Chevy engine in that car ur an idiot!!!!
Currently under way on a 71 chevelle build. Lot of a body similarities for sure. I'm also shaving drip rails and filling out the front and rear windshield channels for factory flushmount glass. Lots of work creating the 1/8" gap around the glass entirely and raising the installed height of the glass to ditch the trim but well worth it in my opinion. Thanks for all your body work vids I'm roughly in the same place you are with your build.
Your car sounds like it's going to be awesome when it's done. I kept debating on doing the flush mount glass on my GTO. I finally decided not to do it. I was looking into the flush kits that you can buy, they were outrageous in price.. who knows, I change my mind off. I might decide to do flush mount. I have so much time in this car. I just want to get it done at this point, but I don't want to skimp at the same time. Thanks for leaving a comment. All the best my friend. Keep in touch
Inspired by your work on the 68 I have got a lot done on my 69 . Enjoy riding along with you. Birdy
Joe, Thank you for riding along. I'm glad that my videos helped you. I am going to be cutting the front fender to get more Tire space. That will probably be my next video. I am going to take a break for a couple months, probably get back at it early September. All the best.
🤙🏽
Cool 👍
Harry, When you cut that fender back, could you possibly make a video of that? About the tach on the hood , you can go either way. The car will look good . The side mirrors ,I was going to do the exact same thing. I have two of them that I saved off a wreck I built in 1978. Thank you, Tom
Hi Tom. I will definitely make a video of cutting the fender back. Those sleek mirrors look pretty sharp on a Resto mod. The hood Tach is a tough decision to make. You are correct. It could go either way. It will still would look good both ways. Thanks for commenting. All the best
Great work, keep going, the vids are very helpful ! Greetings from Germany
Thanks, Glad the videos are helpful . All the best..
Awesome job my friend! Keep it up!
Thanks. All the best..
@@classicrewind2715 The GT-37 is dorment currently. But I have the frame removed and getting ready to redo !

Hello Harry, my 64 Chevelle is progressing. I had asked you a while ago about your Unisteer rack in your GTO and you responded that you hadn’t driven the car yet. At this point I am about ready to yank mine out and go back to a gear box. When going down a flat/smooth road the car feels like it wants to wander, when approaching a slight turn in the road the car feels like I’m going to lose control. I called Unisteer and spoke to Tracy, useless. I tried to get them to tell me how to adjust the vertical movement of center arm where the inner tie rods are connected to, their response was, take the unit out and send it back to them. It sure seems like Unisteer is a poor system. At this point I’m looking for opinions.
Hi David. I went with unisteer, you are absolutely right. Their customer service is horrible. I had a question a while back, a couple years ago. They never got back to me. I hope I don't have that same issue that you have. I was thinking about using Flaming river. Their unit was a lot more money. At this point, I don't know what to tell you because I still am in my build stage. I am going to put a quick update video on the car. I'm going to take the summer off. I've been putting a couple car show videos up. Probably do one more and then take the summer off. Please let me know if unisteer ever gets back to you. I really hope I don't have the same problem. All the best. Keep in touch..
Thanks for getting back with me Harry. I hate to do it but your right a flaming river unit is much more expensive and about twice what it would cost to go with a CPP close ratio steering box with all the components to complete the swap. What part of the world are you in ?
Hi Dave. I am from New Jersey. Grew up in PA. What area are you from ? I hope everything works out for you. A couple guys tried to talk me out of getting the rack and pinion system. I just wanted a nice clean look, plus when you're doing a Restomod, everyone puts in a rack and pinion.
Funny, grew up in S. Brunswick. N.J. was then transferred to Mountaintop Pa. and now living 30mins. north of Daytona Beach, FL. I bought this 64 Malibu SS about four years ago sight unseen. Frame off restoration body is very straight, well built 327/400+hp. Tremec T56 6spd. Some things the builder went above and beyond and some things I just shake my head at. It’s a good thing I love working on this thing. If you don’t mind, when you get yours on the road let me know how you like your rack and check the vertical play of that center arm, there shouldn’t be any. Good luck with the rest of your project.
@davidrosenthal735 I'm about 40 minutes north of South Brunswick. I don't know if you ever heard of Chester NJ. I live near there. I'm almost done with my welding. I put in my kindigit door handles. Having a problem trying to find someone to paint, I plan on doing the body work. Everyone I talk to is about 2 years out. At the rate I'm going , I probably won't be done for 3 to 4 more years. Which is depressing. Best of luck. I will keep posting videos . Keep in touch..
This remind me of the high school parking lot back in the 70s. I’m working on a 68 Tempest convertible,, that was my mother‘s car. I have a garage like yours I’m 60 years old. I keep asking myself every day. What the hell did I take it off the frame for?lol,, it needs about the same amount of work as your GTO. I might have to ask you for some pointers someday. Thanks for the videos you do
Hi, glad you're enjoying the videos. Thanks for commenting. Definitely, if you have any questions. I will try to help you as much as I can. I respond to all my subscribers. All the best
Thanks for sharing ! I learned something I wanted to know, I put new aftermarket fenders on the front of my 68 Camaro n the gap is terrible towards the middle but the ends top n bottom look good so this has helped a lot.
Glad it helped.. All the best
You the man 👍
Thanks All the best
Love a good car show. Great variety of cars! Thanks Harry!
Had a lot of fun at that car show. Glad you enjoyed the video. All the best
A lot of great looking cars. I hope your car is coming a long good I have it in a while.
Have a lot of fun at the car show. My car is coming along slowly. I still have metal work to do. I have to order my Vintage Air, so I can dry fit before I weld it to the firewall. Don't want the bolts going through to the engine compartment. All the best
Thank you so much
Awesome, Glad to help. Hope you liked & subscribed.
You need a 4 point or 6 point rollbar tying the body to the frame vertically. Not lateral support.
I could always add that later. I don't think I would need that cruising on the streets. But we'll see once I get the car all together. Thanks for commenting. All the best
Hi Harry! Reviewing this video again since I am getting closer to doing this work on my Chevelle. I bought a floor pan with braces, but my rockers, I purchased separately. What makes more sense to you? Install the rockers on the floor pan before trying to install on the car or install the rockers separate from the floor pan on the car? Thank you sir in advance.
Hi Steven , You would have to install the Rockers first so the floor pan will line up properly. If I were you I will secure everything with some zip screws that way if you need to make an adjustment you could move it. Don't forget to dry fit your doors too, make sure the gap on the bottom is correct. All the best..
@@classicrewind2715 fantastic! Thank you very much for the direction! Appreciate it! Keep up the good work! Your video's are beyond helpful.
Thanks for all the knowledge, just got one question do you have a picture or video doing the bracing to lift cab off of frame
No, I did not make a video on how to brace the car. If you watch the video. You could see the connecting points on where I welded the braces so it does not move.. There might be other videos that show those braces. You might have to just go through the whole collection. LOL
💯
