With respect to the Lupercalia-Valentine’s connection, most serious scholars would argue that there is absolutely no connection between the two whatsoever. Lupercalia was celebrated on February 15th. Lupercalia was very local; it was held almost _exclusively_ in Rome and it had zero to do with romance. There are only scant references to it being held anywhere else. Suggesting that such a localized event could have been the seeding of some sort of “proto-Valentine’s Day” across Europe strains credulity. Further, there are no historical records of Lupercalia being celebrated more recent than the end of the 5th century. The alleged drawing of lots between couples is an 18th century invention which comes from an English custom of doing the same which originated in the 1400’s. Amongst the nobility, the recipient of the Valentine’s token was sometimes chosen by lot. One would draw a name written on a long strip of paper from a box. The paper with the name on it was then worn in one’s hat band. The person whose name was written on the paper would become that person’s “Valentine” for the day. This custom of choosing one’s Valentine via lots eventually died out at the end of the 19th century, however, over time, it got woven into the Lupercalia-Valentine’s Day myth. There are _zero_ contemporary historical records that even _remotely_ suggest such a lottery, or anything similar, ever took place at the Roman Lupercalia. Around the end of the 400’s, Pope Gelasius I made February 14 into a day that would honor the Christian martyr, Saint Valentine. At no point however does Gelasius speak of compromise, or of adapting any pagan customs associated with the Lupercalia. Like any other saint’s feast day, there would have been a mass held on that day to remember his martyrdom. That’s about the extent of it. Valentine’s Day and romance became associated with each other _only in the late 14th century_ with a few well-known poems of Geoffrey Chaucer (of “Canterbury Tales” fame). That’s a pretty huge gap between the late 1300’s and the end of Lupercalia in the 400’s. A thousand year gap where nothing resembling Lupercalia or romance and Valentine’s Day is historically attested or recorded. Just because some relatively “modern” festival/holiday happens to occur on near the same day as an ancient pre-Christian festival in no way argues for a connection or make the ancient festival an *origin* for the modern holiday. For something to be claimed as an _origin,_ there must be more than simply a similar date. There are only so many days in the year and calendar overlap in holidays is quite common. A supposed connection between Valentine’s Day and the Roman Lupercalia lies solely within the realm of some very wishful thinking.
