The Ratings Game and Focus - Episode 211
Let's talk about ratings, one of those double-edged swords that really don't say anything about how you play.
While there's definitely a place for ratings in our sport, the only reason you need the rating is if it's consistent with what you want.
Always ask yourself;
1) Why do I need the rating?
2) What's the rating doing for me and what I want with the game?
So if you want to play tournaments and it requires a certain type of rating, then you're going to have to comply with that requirement. That's a tournament specific requirement.
Use DUPR or any rating system, only as necessary to accomplish your objectives as opposed to a vicious cycle that interferes with the reason for your play and why you go out to the court. What really matters at the end of the day is how good you feel about how you're playing.
In this episode we also look at another email that I received from one of our students talking about focus- baseline focus. The focus you can reasonably bring to bear while you play.
Now, you want to try and bring your attention to the thing that matters when you're playing pickleball in the technical sense and the thing that matters is the little yellow ball. That's all that matters. Where is it? Where's it going? What am I going to do with it?
The better you're able to ignore that score, the better you're going to be to stay in the moment and focus on what needs to get done.

Great podcast again today Tony - there are 2 things I learned from the System that help me with focus. The first is breathing - taking intentional breaths between every rally seems to help keep the brain engaged in the action. Also, at one time you or CJ mentioned playing every rally as if the score were 1-1. I try to do that and it does help!

Tony your opinion on focus was very interesting. I was just in a tournament of eight games. We had a bye after the sixth game and my focus for the game after the bye was gone. Unfortunately we lost that game I think because my focus did not come back until four points into the game. I will try to use some of the suggestions you presented in my next game. As for the rating, I think in rec play the ratings players give themselves are either overrated or underrated. I don't get caught up in my rating. It does lead to frustration and lost enjoyment of the game for most people. t

When I play I try to emulate Ben John's actions on the court. He always has the same expression on his face whether he wins or loses the point. This is a common trait seen by all great players in any sport. Internally I may be asking myself why I just missed that shot but externally I try to keep myself on an even keel, For your thoughts about antics on the court I agree 100% that the antics are something left are just immature and stupid. As you have said in the past, keep the game in perspective. It's not life and death, It is a game!!! Your self worth should not be tied to whether you win or lose. Those players yelling and screaming on the court are acting like little kids.

I think the word fundamentals is overlooked by a lot of players. Why are so many recreational players offended when using this term? I understand there’s normally a reason why a player continues to miss certain shots, a fundamental! Your teachings on the 3 pillars of pickleball and embracing how to improve has changed my game. So much, I see more mistakes other players continue to make. After following you for a long time I think it would be interesting to ask followers to name their top five or ten things, that they have learned following you that led to their improvement. It could be a variety of answers from the 3 pillars.

100% a must to listen to - 1 person can say 1 thing when after playing great & switching courts for a next game & never before played ppl - 1 shouted out a very bad comment. It was so embarrassing. I walked off the court and asked someone else to play with my partner. The bottom line is I’m thick skinned, I have never been called a name on a court ever and I have been playing since October 22. This totally shut me down for two months with now my major arm & mind no longer wanting to play at all. I had just overcome six months of therapy for a bad sprain on my leg and in my hip area I was picking up playing again - mentally, negative words create additional pain in your body from such an awful jerk up. I never told him but stared him down during the rest of that game . My PB partner came over right after the match and sat by me, which was very motivational - his support was so needed at that moment. I guess it’s the bottom line is people should listen to this podcast because one word can do damage and one word can build you up.

I like the name Pickleball Therapy. There isn’t a negative connotation to Physical Therapy…..just possibly the mental health aspect. With mental health resources being discussed more freely in public, I don’t think there is as much negativity on “therapy” as there was in the past.

I like the title of Pickleball Therapy. In our society therapy is changing to a positive activity, not something to be ashamed of , so keep the title. As for 5 K thoughts, I have to agree with you. After the Chicago camp and your input I realized that my return of serve and my serve were not where they should be. So I returned to the practice court to focus first on my returns and then my serve. I was focused too much on the end result and not enough on the process. As to the empathy riff, I find the older I get the more empathetic I get and less critical I have become. Of course part of that involves Pickleball Therapy which has shown me to be more understanding and empathetic with different playing partners.

Tony another great message today. Just got back from your Chicago camp yesterday due to the rain cancelling Friday's play. Camp was outstanding. CJ, Kyleen and you were great to work with and not only were you all great instructors but were funny and kept everything light without any pressure. Your message today was something I use to teach to my physical therapy patients. Some people like to set aside 45 min to exercise which is great, but you can also make great gains with spreading your exercises throughout the day if that works for you. There are multiple opportunities to do some exercises during your day. If people look for these times they will be able to increase both their strength and flexibility which will help when they play pickleball. During the camp my one word to describe my pickleball journey was challenging. I find that the deeper you dig into the game the more you realize there will always be more to learn. You can always find things to work on if you desire to improve your game. That is what I find not only physically challenging but also mentally challenging which is great when you are a senior player like me.

Did I play better today than yesterday?" I want to compare myself to myself, not to another player, from one day to the next to track the state of "my game."

I just started listening to this podcast because a friend of mine told me about it. I have been playing pickleball for 2 years and I have racquetball experience. I have gotten better, I went to Tyson McGuffins pickleball camp and I drill a couple of times of week in addition to playing 2 to 3 times a week. I have gotten frustrated with my fellow rec players and they have not improved their skill level in the past 2 years. They don’t move very fast and they are happy to lose. They do not take constructive criticism lightly and they are content in just playing. I know I am competitive but I always give 110 percent but they only give about 75 percent. I listened to Sara and thought she said great things and I will take to heart. I took this week off from playing pickleball to gather my thoughts and start fresh next week with hopefully a new outlook. Great podcast and I will continue to listen.

Tony, your presentation about balance sheets does work not only in pickleball but also in life. How often do you feel down and funky about your life in general? Some people are always down and out while others have learned to focus on the positive side of the balance sheet. When those dark feelings start to drift in I will purposely focus on all the good things in my life which leads to a positive change in my mindset. Same thing goes with pickleball as you demonstrated. Good presentation.

Your rift was right on target Tony. I was getting slammed during my play, but the last time I played I focused on recognizing the type of shots being hit and then decided to either move forward or stay in place. The people who said the video was useless were wrong and probably thought they were experts. So many players reach a level and win more than lose and decide they are at the optimal level. Unfortunately, they stop learning and stagnate. Pickleball is a journey and the only time we stop learning is when we leave this earth. As to iteration thoughts, one should always try to improve in all areas of their lives everyday! It doesn't have to be great changes but even small changes are wonderful. Every time I play my measure of success or failure is whether I have improved that day, not whether I won more then lost.

I give advice, with no apologies. Because it’s extremely frustrating to go to intermediate rec play sessions (that I PAY for) which are round robin in our area, to get paired with people who have zero strategy, don’t come to the net, do nothing but bang, have never taken a clinic, etc. Be real Tony. No one is giving advice on fancy shots. It’s basic pball 101. Attempting to bring along random partners who have no business playing in higher level sessions.

This podcast, as I recall, is aimed at the receiver of the advice - to help them navigate that process.

Was watching a UA-cam video by Johnkew which interviewed Andrei Daescu, Meghan Dizon and Travis Rettenmaier. His question was how important was the mental side of pickleball. All three stated that mental side of pickleball was very important for playing at your best. I hardly agree since no matter what your playing level is your physical skills are about the same level. The difference is the degree of mental strength or toughness you have. Whether staying focused, getting out of a funk and how to keep enjoying the sport despite all the outside distractions Pickleball Therapy helps with each of these areas.

I like your attitude. I only care about winning and losing when I'm in a league match or a tournament. EVERY OTHER GAME is an opportunity, not to go to my strengths, but to my weaknesses...and to improve. At the end of a the day of playing in a public pick-up game I can't tell you how many games I won or lost. But I do have a strong sense of whether I improved the shot or the technique that I was focusing on that day.

TLDR: appreciating and recognizing everything that comes with a loss is in itself a win for me. Tapping into their winning experience is by no means bad but take a second to appreciate your own winning experience. You don't need to win the match or the point to have your winning experience. As a competitive person myself it was difficult to wrap my head around the concept and even thought it was a losers coping mindset for a while, but, as I've grown older I've nurtured an appreciation for simply being in the moment and those moments include all the losses and everything that comes with a loss, the act of recognizing that last part is what makes a loss a win for me.

As far a winning and losing go, I've learned from Pickleball Therapy that your opponents are trying to win just as you are. Sometimes you win and feel good, but when you lose feel good for your opponents since they have the same right to win the game as you do.
