Don't be like me and leave your Cell phone out of a mount in your vehicle. Hit the brakes hard, phone flew and hit my rig in the face and cracked the bezel. Finally found one at Pacparts.com, and replaced it myself. Reprogrammed the rig with my old RT Systems programmer. Also bought a new mic, as the old one was shot.

Man that thing sounds clear I just installed mine today and it’s not that clear sounding Would love to know what your settings are
Thanks Shane, it was really quiet that day. Wish I could remember what settings I was running, but it wasn't much, IIRC.
How can you run this radio on a hybrid ? Can it actually work when the engine is on ? And also you have a separate battery for it ? How can you transmit with engine off 100w ? 73s, Jimmy SY1DAL
Hi Jimmy, I don't have this setup anymore. Yes, it works fine with the engine on...it was idling when I recorded this video. There is a separate factory battery in the trunk that I connected to for power. As mentioned in my comments, I mostly did highway travel, which minimalised any RFI. Worst noise is while braking, as the system uses braking for energy (I think). I was very surprised it worked so well, as every rule in the book says HF doesn't work with hybrid cars. 73, Brett
@@k5wxp22 yes it's nice to know. As most of hybrid cars don't work with hf radios . My car is old tech so it's ok so far but if on the future I buy a hybrid car I shall have to figure out a solution. 73s, Jimmy
I have a 22 Camry SE that I'm wanting to get a radio installed, looked at it with another ham we were not sure where to run the wires or what fuse to connect the positive side to. If I could get some help that would be great 73, KC9MLE
Hi Matt! We ran power from the rear battery in my Camry. It is in the trunk on the right side. Not sure if your 22 is the same. Mounted the rig under the passenger seat. Hope that helps. Happy Thanksgiving!
@@k5wxp22 I'm gonna have to glance at it when I'm out there today. I'm a Motorola guy, and I'm wanting to stick my new XTL in there at some point. is it under the trunk mat? Have never rely seen it.
@@mattalexander8925 yes sir, under the mat. I think there is a plastic cover, too.
What kind of cup holder mount is that? It looks pretty solid.
Hi Ron, it's a good mount, thanks! A good friend of mine made it for me. PVC pipe with some closed cell foam glued around it. We colored it black with a Sharpie. Top is a thin piece of wood painted black, with the head unit mount screwed to it.
That Hurst sticker on the fan shroud adds at least 20 hp!
Nice job brother !!
We know is t work good but you do not show how to plug to be work
Is there an iPhone version?
Nice, clean install and seems to work very well. I just purchased an FT-891 for portable ops and I am anxious to try it out. 73!
how did you connect the pRxTx table to the radio ?? blue tooth ? or was it a direct usb connection please. im going to by the ft-891 and want to set it up with my tables but couldnt figure it out
I am using a USB cable with an adapter for the Samsung tablet. You have to tell the app how you are connecting. Don't forget to power on the app!
ua-cam.com/video/1OyU8BYhPMs/v-deo.html
So do you have a side hooked up to the radio? I don't get your setup.
Best description of the setup can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/ZCKDw48YZoA/v-deo.html
How’s the atas doing I’ve been looking at this antenna but it gets its fair share of bad reviews
Hi Kevin, my mount broke, and then I got a new company car. Have not gotten around to re-installing. Worked great while it was in service, though. Just make sure you ground it really well. 73!
Hello from N5KTH, I lived in Wichita falls when I got my ticket. Who's active around there nowadays?
Hi Jim, I live in Fort Worth and was visiting a friend in WF when I made this video. I don't know how active things are there these days.
i have that full paid app and its great, i love the waterfall part that helps finds all the signals,, my question is dose the water fall work with this radio,, and any new info if and when it will be released thanks for posting this video KD9JRU
Stormtrooper, I don't believe so, since the 891 does not have an IF or Rx out. Would be cool if you could at least duplicate the rig's band scope on the app display though... especially since it is so quick. Then if you could use the touch screen to move to a signal via synch with rig. Might be worth shooting the app's author to see if it is a feature that could be added?
is there any way you could show how you connected the tablet to the 891, i can see your cable coming out of the tablet, but did it go right to the radio or was there a hub? connection where 2 cables connected, thank @@k5wxp22
@@q1o1mancow sorry for the extremely delayed response. I have ha d a crazy year with 4 eye surgeries thanks to a detached retina. The setup uses a Samsung OTG (on the go) adapter. Will try to take a pic if you are still interested.
@@k5wxp22 thanks for the reply, i figured it out, and our prayers for a fast recovery, i was hoping the app would get more ( u.s. sdr choices ) but by all means this app is the best, and thank you for taking the time to get back to me, ive been using sdr.hu/map to connect with people all over the u.s. and sometimes even to us it to hear them where my yeasu ft-891 cant receive , thanks again for all your effort
Awesome video. I still can't believe the receiver on this rig. Thanks for sharing. 73 Julian oh8stn
Thanks, and 73 Julian!
Thanks, Brett. I'm new at this. How do you connect to the FT891?
Jim Cox, glad to help if I can. We were all new at one time! I use a cable, usb from tablet to usb on rear of the rig. The software has a setup that you have to do, but it is straightforward and relatively easy. I want to try this with a cell phone instead of large tablet since I am traveling in my car. Should work the same.
Yes, I looked at the rear panel and saw exactly what you were talking about. I too want to try with my cell phone. I do a lot of QRP and portable work and controlling my FT891 from a tablet will help quite a bit. Both my tablet and phone are android. Thanks for your UA-cam video and your answers to my elementary questions. Just one more question, are you using bluetooth yet? If so, what is your bluetooth device at the radio?
Jim Cox, glad to help! I had my mobile antenna mount bite the dust a couple of weeks ago, and have not fixed it yet. So, I haven't played with the setup at all. Have not tried bluetooth, but I would think with the right adapter that it should work fine.
Thanks again. Maybe we'll connect again on the air. 73s Jim
Brett, Are you using a CT-62 cable from Samsung to FT-891? Jim - W3COX
HI Jim Cox! No, I am running standard usb to usb cable... like you use on a printer. I do use a Samsung OTG adapter cable for the tablet to go from Micro usb to full size though.
Thanks for the review! The 891 is on my list, like it a lot. 73, John - NO0I
sir, how contact FT-891?use which Bluetooth?
wachins, I am using a usb cable from the rig to the tablet.
sir, do you know the 857D Bluetooth CAT can use contact 891? I have one and will buy 891,so I am search for that Information.
wachins Sorry, I do not know. Perhaps you can contact Yaesu?
ok,Thx a lot .73

hey bud can I ask did you have to run separate ground wire to the atas to get it to work?
Hi Vini, yes, please see my response to oldpreach. 73!
Hi. Can you please tell me the brand and such on that cup holder mount? It looks like it screws right into the back of the control head...the 891 has that threaded hole on the back just like a camera does that goes on a tripod.
oldpreach, it is a custom mount made from pvc and a foam surround. Top plate is made from wood that we painted black, and glued to the top of the pvc pipe/foam. We then mounted the bracket to the cap with screws. I regularly remove the head unit to hide it from thieves. So far, it is holding up very well.
K5WXP Thanks Brett ! I have a Camry also, so I'm looking for the best solution. Your set up looks great, and your ATAS sounds wonderful. I picked up an 891 a couple of months ago. Looks like we are twins ! I suppose you have a trunk mouth for the antenna grounded to the trunk and body?
oldpreach, thanks for the compliment! Yes the antenna is mounted with a Comet HD5M on the trunk. We ran a ground braid under the bracket on the bottom side of the trunk down to a good spot. You MUST have a good ground with the ATAS 120A, or it won't work very well at all.
Running my Yaesu FT-891 with ATAS 120-A in the Toyota Camry hybrid, and talking to John on his FT-450 with Larry's Antennas screwdriver antenna. I was just outside of Texarkana, and John was at Canyon Lake, Texas. About 430 miles under really tough conditions.
That's Harry K5FAB (now K4KPT) in there
Matt W5MIX , I didn't know he had moved. Nice fella, hope he is doing well!
Would it be possible to let me know what settings you used to get the 3000 working with SDR Console? I'm running a FTDX-1200 with HDSDR with no issues and using an RTL Dongle. However, I like the looks of SDR Console better. I have CAT connection via Omnirig and thats working fine but I can't get signal from the IF output working. I know there are settings for all this in HDSDR but I can't find any in SDR Console. Any info would be great. Thanks, KC2NVG, Billy. 73!
Hi Billy, sorry for the delayed response! If you're using the dongle with the newest version of SDR Console, I beleive there's a file you have to download and add to the program to make it "see" the dongle. I'm using an SDRPlay RSP-1, and it's already set up to accept it. It's been quite a while since I went through the setup. I'm not sure how the 1200 works, either. I was thinking you had to add the SCU-17 to do your IF out. I'm using the RX out on my 3000 rather than the IF out, and it allows me to use the attenuation from the rig to adjust things. If you're not a member of the Facebook group for SDRPlay, I would try joining that. There is also a Yahoo group for SDR Console, and it's well worth signing up for. Look up Mike Ladd and Paul Jones on either group. They can definitely point you in the right direction. 73, Brett K5WXP
How does the SDRplay and SDRuno software compare to an iCom R71a, R75 or other desktop receiver of the same caliber ?
I can't comment on those receivers, but my FTdx-3000 receives better. That being said, the SDRplay rx is pretty darned close, and it only costs $150, and the SDRuno software is free. 73, Brett KF5WXP
That's pretty cool.. I am thinking about getting the SDRplay.. It is a (I wouldn't say tossup) between the SDRplay and a Tecsun PL880.. I think the SDRplay has a lot more going for it then the 880, would you agree?
+Mike Notarnicola I have not tried the 880, but the SDRplay certainly has some advantages. Keep in mind I am not using mine to its full potential... I'm just using it mainly as a panadapter. With SDRuno, you can run two virtual receivers at the same time. If you look at SDR-Console, it can run multiple vfo's at the same time. You can also run multiple notch filters with the sdr to reduce interference from nearby stations. The RSP-1 (SDRplay) is extremely broad banded, so you can do a lot with it. Check Robert Nagy's site here on UA-cam... he has tested the Tecsun and the SDRplay RSP-1, and might be able to give you better insight in comparing the two. 73, Brett KF5WXP
Perhaps drop your gain down some, found when i have mine of the RX out of the 3000, i don't need the gain so high, looks just like overload rather than interference..
Thanks Paul, I will try that!
KD6CFE was here. 73`s
Thanks for stopping by, Al! 73, Brett
Curious - Does the SDR S/W control the VFO of your radio?
+LaValle Laabs With Omni-rig, it works either way. If I click on a signal on HDSDR on the monitor, it tracks the Yaesu with it. If I tune via the VFO on the Yaesu, it tracks the SDR-play. You can set it up in Omni-rig to do that.
Sorry I'm not a narrator on my videos, but this is what I was trying to show with this particular video: ua-cam.com/video/L1FS5hLZIMo/v-deo.html Everything tracks with Omni-rig. My logging software, SDR software, and the Yaesu FTdx-3000 are all synch'd up.
thanks
Bret - Thanks for responding. I have searched the various forums without success and what brought me here. Appreciate any and all help that you can give. 73 LaValle KD9FOF
I have for weeks trying to get the exact same HW/SW to work, VFO tracks however audio and waterfall are nothing but static
I have the same HW/SW, I'm assuming you are also using Omirig, my question - what are your EXTO settings, three weeks tinkering and I can only get the VFO to track but nothing but static from SDR. 73 LaValle KD9FOF
+LaValle Laabs, I am away from home right now and can't check my settings. Try the Yahoo group for SDRplay and you'll probably find what you need. I will check my settings once I get home from travelling. And yes, I'm using Omnirig. 73, Brett KF5WXP
+LaValle Laabs I have asked a friend of mine to assist you. Hopefully you will hear from him soon. 73, Brett KF5WXP
Are you using the IF output or the RX output of the Yaesu??
+TonruNomad, I am using the RX output.
+TonruNomad , check here for a better description on how to set it up. I'm not much of a narrator/camera man! Frank made a very good video to explain how/why to set it up this way. ua-cam.com/video/ZCKDw48YZoA/v-deo.html
To explain the shifting digits on the frequency display, it was a little cold in the shack, and the rig was still warming up.
Hello, is the SDRPlay connected to the RX OUT of the Yaesu FTDX3000? Emanuel, IK2RGT
Hi Emanuele, yes it is. I used a premade cable of R-174 coax with an sma at one end and rca at the other. RCA goes to the rx out on the rig, sma goes to the SDRplay. 73, Brett
Could you give details on the setup? I've looked everywhere in SDRconsle and can't find the "external radio" section to set up rig control with omnirig.
+ShooterReady Click on the "Display" tab when you are on the "Home" screen. Then look for the "External Radio" tab that is #11 from the left. This will allow you to set up your rig via Omni-rig.
sure is pretty to look at. Will have to try that with my ftdx3000 some day soon.
It's very easy to set up and use. You will definitely have fun with it!
Listening to some eSSB guys on 7.230, and switching back and forth between my delta loop and end fed random wire. The end fed is much quieter on receive than the loop (it is vertically polarized).
