The Bristol Channel Yacht Club (BCYC) in Mumbles, Swansea celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2025. Snooker has always been a feature at the club as it was originally formed as part of a merger with the Mumbles Billiards Society.
The Billiard Room is steeped in history with beautiful artefacts: the triangular wooden box for the snooker balls, the Burroughes & Watts table, which is likely to be as least as old as the BCYC, and a gorgeous scoreboard from the same company. It’s a room made for wiling away the hours, sitting in the red leather window seats, drinking in the widescreen views of Swansea Bay.
Every room has an abundance of historical interest and significance - from the framed list of the original members in 1875 and letters from the Queen in the Club Room to the meteorological device and stunning clock in the Dining Room.
Alyson Nicholson is Rear Commodore at BCYC and she was kind enough to provide the guided tour of the listed building. But she’s also a mean snooker player, especially when pitted against her husband Paul, the club secretary!
