Absolutely smashing. Donald McLaughlin here, lurking in the background and watching.
As a Greenockian born in 1939 I was thrilled to watch the video on the history of Greenock. I spent most of my life as a heating engineer and James Watt became my guru. When I watch the magnificent steam engines on the beloved Waverley it prides me to think these were the direct result of James Watt’s invention. The engines were built by Rankin and Blackmore in Greenock in 1946 and it is a testament to their engineering that the engines still power the steamer around the coast of Britain every year. Alistair Macleod.
Thanks for this! I also have a couple of videos on the Waverley, a fabulous vessel!
I wish that I could this ! Getting down n the dirt. My brother and niece have done this . Archeological digs in Boston. Way cool . Way cool .
It was a great few days away, and I feel friendships were made 😊
Another fine viewing ❤🫵🏼💯
Thank you!!
I had the trip through the canal back in 1977 on a Caledonian Ferry the Scalpy roll on roll off ferry . I was only 15 years old and worked on deck working the ropes . brilliant times and a wonderfull place.
I'll have to arrange to actually travel on the water up the canal at some stage. I've documented the history along the full length of the path and what's under it!
Really interesting. Thanks! I'm coming to visit mid December. Really looking forward to it.
The Hill House is really worth the visit. The designs are breath taking!
There's a lot of remarkable exhibits in the museum. Thanks for this.
It's a fascinating place. I could spend hours in the museum alone!
@@ExploringScotlandsHistory I quite believe it x
It's a beautiful place and the detail is lovely. Thanks for this.
I do plan to return, really fancy a couple of days roaming around next time!
Great video and informative as always. Impromptu stops are a good thing. You never know what you'll find. Pity about the motorbikes for filming but such is life.
So true!
Great vieeo, and you chose a lovely day to visit. Thanks for all the research into the people buried there too. Absolutely fascinating.
I really find archaelogy fascinating. Hopefully you can re-visit with an update if they find more of the structure in the future.
All being well, I hope so!!
Excellent bridges brilliant video 😊👍
Thanks for watching! The engineering is amazing!
Fascinating stuff. Thanks for this.
Thanks for watching Valerie 😊
What a great opportunity! Thank you for sharing this.
It really was! The archaeology students were so keen, it was a pleasure spending time with them all!
Brilliant Julie, didn't know you'd been on the dig.
Yes! It was a great couple of days... the perfect intro to the Borders for me too!
@@ExploringScotlandsHistory I'd been following progress on Ancrum Heritage, great to see it on video, thanks.
They are hoping for another excavation in 2025. Depending on work etc, I may well revisit!

Fantastic few days. The students really had a ball!
@@ExploringScotlandsHistory It has been a while since I was on a dig, but they can be a lot of fun.
@AScottishOdyssey I would have thought with your background you would have been visiting more digs that I do ?!
@@ExploringScotlandsHistory It's just trying to find the time to do so. The day job I'm stuck in just now, takes up too much time, and doesn't pay enough.
@@AScottishOdyssey It can be hard to juggle at times, I know, I work a 44 hour week currently! But if I book holidays, I make sure it's when there is something interesting on that week, lol.
Very beautiful and serene place
It truly is. Thanks for watching!
It's a stunning building, and at least it hasn't been completely robbed. It's a pity about the gates right enough. As always, very interesting.
Indeed, there's many in a worse state than this. Would have liked to in and around the memorials though....
@@ExploringScotlandsHistory oh yes, for sure. It's part of the history of the place.
I'd never heard this story. Very interesting! Thank you!
Thanks for watching Cindy! Hope you are well.
Beautiful Building. It's too bad you can't get inside to get a better look. Oh well! I enjoyed seeing what you were able to record. It must have been a beautiful place when it was still in good condition.
I imagine it was quite imposing in it's day
Interesting video! Thank you for sharing about the Seer!
You are most welcome, thanks for watching !
I've always found him a fascinating character. Thanks for this, and hope you enjoyed your book x
The book is a fascinating read 📚
My dads mate was on it, A BETTANY, A Lancaster lad.
35 of the 37 crew were english. A chap from Swansea and one from Fife were the others. An awful thing to happen 😪
Yes Abe Bettany and my dad both Lancaster lads and neighbors. Must have been writing to each other. Abe saying how much he was enjoying life on the new submarine Vandal. My dad must have been overseas at the time so I don't know when he found out about the sub going down. Probably after the war.
Beautiful castle my name is Donald Bayne and this belong to my ancestors for 200 years. We occupied this castle before clan Davidson.
Thanks for watching! We had an amazing stay there, and added bonus... it was dog friendly, Wrecks had a ball!
Did he not foretell the North Sea oil? I remember something about black rain? But my memory is failing at times, so could be very wrong! I had an old Uncle, who told me many tales about him and his trusted white stone, which he used to divine! But he also tried to fill my head about me being a fairy "Changeling" as well as other great legends. When young over 70 yrs ago, I was fascinated, but today will never repeat many of them, as I'd be dragged of to the asylum! Ha-ha! ..Tich.
Yes, he allegedly did predict North Sea Oil. I could have done an hour long video, but felt you would be the only one to watch it right through 🤣🤣

Another great wee video. Have you ever done one on Thomas the Rhymer?
Haven't spent enough time round the Borders yet! It's nearly a 4 hour drive on a good day, so it's an area that requires prior planning and lots of research 😉
@@ExploringScotlandsHistory Maybe you could have a wee weekend away, and treat yourselves, while you're doing it.
It is beautiful but I agree that it would benice if you could go inside and take a closer look at the monuments.
Yes, unfortunate, but still worth the visit.
I absolutely love the black isle! So beautiful! Felt so at home where my ancestors lived! great videos! thanks for doing them.

Start taking high doses of vitamin D>>>like 30.000 to 40.000 units a day>>>>>>>>That is most likely the culprit
I live in Scotland... Vitamin D is taken daily 🤣 Old age and over use is most likely the culprit 🤣
They really were great craftsman and in Caithness they were known as tinklers due to their wares tinkling on their carts as the moved along. Very interesting video.
I've watched some old Pathè reels of the tinkers/tinklers and their crafts. Quite amazing.
@@ExploringScotlandsHistory I must try and look them up.

I really need to get to more central and eastern locations visited. Takes resources though, and even time is a scarce one atm lol
@ExploringScotlandsHistory life just gets in the way of exploring x
Really interesting. I loved the mythology of the healing wells and the history behind innocent people being accused and going to trial for witchcraft.
Thanks for watching! I find a lot of these tales that can be explained away. Too late for the souls involved unfortunately 😔
❤ Fascinating. I subscribed. From North Carolina USA.
Welcome to the channel! Plenty of history here to keep you intrigued!
Witch trials aren't generally fair. The ritual with the well was intriguing. Let us know what happens with your knee.
Hopefully be skipping soon! 🤞🤣
Very nice video and informative! Your accent is beautiful. ❤️🙏🏻
Isle of Iona is an amazing and emotive site. I will return.
I find Holy wells fascinating, there were quite a few around here at one time but apparently most have fallen into diuse and been forgotten. I know of some on private land which are inaccessible which is sad as they used to be places of pilgrimage. We visited a couple recently, one was dry but we filled bottles at the other. I'm ordering a book about wells in Wales so I hope we can find more to visit.
There are only a few Clootie wells and trees left in Scotland, a few Fairy Wells too! I'm fascinated by the old rituals and charms used by our ancestors.
