United States
Приєднався 18 січ 2024
Overlanding is defined as the travel of long distance over land. To me, overlanding is about exploring new places, meeting new people, and the fun of outfitting my Jeep with gear that makes sense for what I'm going to use it for.
On Roof Top Rover Overlanding, I share my love for outdoor adventure. I've been an outdoorsman for most of my life. Overlanding, Camping, Hiking, Backpacking, Off roading and Kayaking. I just love getting out there.
On this channel, you'll see how I've modified my Jeep to meet my overlanding needs. I'll review the gear I use as well as some DIY projects to make certain gear multi use or to expand their capabilities.
If you're into overlanding and outdoor adventure, or want to learn more about it, this is the channel for you. Subscribe and join me on my Roof Top Rover Overlanding adventures!

Liner Failure on NaturNest Roof Top Tent
So far the Nature Nest Sirius cantileever rooftop tent has been great. No major mechanical issues.
Over the summer, I opened the tent to test out a new piece of gear and it appears that after about 6 months of use and sitting in the hot summer sun, the headliner adhesive failed on most of the shell.
Here's the process that I went through to repair my tent. And so far its holding up just fine.
Here are the materials I used for the repair.

Magnets - a.co/d/hdAKOnM

First failure with Roof Top Tent!

After having my NaturNest clamshell roof top tent for several weeks and using it several times. I started to experience a failure on the pole supports that the front poles slide into for supporting the rain fly. Making awning for NaturNest Cantilever Hard Shell Rooftop Tent

Since NaturNest doesn't offer an entry canopy for the cantilever RTT yet, in this video, I show you how I modified a canopy from another RTT to fit on the NatureNest Cantilever RTT. I used a canopy from OVS that I bought online, some 1.5 inch hook and loop with sticky back. I also used a sewing machine & tape measure for the project. This is the awning I purchased. How is holding up ? I bought a used one, and the only defect I see is that the fabric on the inside of the shell came loose.
Mine is doing well! My fabric came loose as well, and I just got done repairing it. I'm hoping to post a video on how I did the repairs soon.
@@RoofTopRoverOverlanding awesome. Please do. Haven't looked into it at all yet.
I just post the repair video. I hope it helps. ua-cam.com/video/KTuzSsRFGtU/v-deo.html
@RoofTopRoverOverlanding I was thinking about using gorilla fabric glue. But I'll probably go your route with the glue you used.
That may work great, too. As long as it's thin enough, the inject through a syringe needle.
Great info about the tent. Is cantilever the model name for the tent?
On their website It's the Naturnest Sirius clamshell roof top tent XXL.
Where is the review on this after using it?
Thanks for the comment. I wanted to give it plenty of use before creating the review. I have another trip coming up in a week. I will be making the video after that trip and and hope to have it posted by the end of this month.

Is there enough space to be able to leave your bedding inside when the tent is closed up?
If you keep the stock mattress and don't add any additional padding, you could possibly store 2 "thin" sleeping bags or a couple fleece blankets in it. but that's about it. I bought a 1.25" egg crate foam pad and cut it down to size. It's difficult to close the lid with that in there. There is definitely no room for bedding if you add any additional padding. If you pull the original mattress out and do the inflatable pad, and then suck all the air out when you deflate it, you may be able to sore more bedding in it depending on how thick the pad is when it's deflated.
How is the shell headliner doing , the one on mine already fall out
I had the same thing happen to mine. I contacted NaturNest about it, and apparently, they had a bad batch of glue that was used on some early ones. The more recent ones shouldn't have that problem. They sent me a repair kit to fix mine. I'm making a video on the process of how to repair it.
were the fly rods and mounting brackets under the mattress?
Great question. All the hardware (rods & brackets) were next to the ladder when originally opened. Unfortunately, the camera shot didn't turn out, so I had to redo it and forgot to put the hardware back where it was.
Thanks for the vid. Nice job with the diy leverage assist too, work smarter not harder!
Thanks for watching!
Will it fit 2 adults (5.4ft & 5ft) and a 8 year old?
It may be ok, as long as you don't mind being fairly close together and don't roll around a lot in your sleep. I'd suggest marking out a spot on the floor with the dimensions and having all 3 of you lay in that spot to see how you would all fit.
They do offer annex on their website now.
Yep, another person let me know. I already ordered it. I should have it in about a week. I needed one for winter before they offered one, so I made this one. It was a fun project.
@@RoofTopRoverOverlanding Otherwise, how is it holding up? I’m thinking about ordering one myself!
The one I made works well. I especially like having the Velcro attachment. It makes setup and teardown faster.
Is there a way for the tent to handle condensation build up? Like vents in the upper area?
There is a horizontal Velcro flap vent directly above the door that has mesh behind it. It can help with ventilation but you will need to partially unzip a window to help with the flow of air.
Thanks for the measurement, definitely not is advertised of 63inch wide.
I think they get the 63" from the overall width of the shell. But you are correct, the sleeping area is not 63" wide.
Will it not closed if you leave the original bed pad and lay the D-Hive on top of it?
Nope. If you have the original pad with the D-Hive on top of it, it would be to thick to close the top.
What's the weight of the tent
Here is a video I made on weights and measures. ua-cam.com/video/EycAI07_BTE/v-deo.html
What is the rooftop weight please?
Check out my rooftop tent weight and dimensions video. ua-cam.com/video/EycAI07_BTE/v-deo.html
Is there an annex for this?
Unfortunately, no. Not that I'm aware of or been able to find. I'm actually in the process of making one myself. I'll post a DIY video once I have the first version done to show the process I used and the result.
The link u provided shows a different tent that pop up horizontal. This one in the video pop up side ways.
They keep switching the link. I went back to check my original link, and it looks like it's sold out for now. But here's the same tent from another reseller. a.co/d/glk1slj
thanks for your comment
No worries
I am assuming that since you were deflating it, it has to be deflated in order to close it up properly. Is that correct?
That is correct. You need to deflate it. I'm preparing a quick follow-up video about its performance and ractical inflation / deflation in the field.
Looking forward to seeing it.@@RoofTopRoverOverlanding
Great job that mounting jig. I was wondering how i'm going to get the one I have on order on top of my car.
Yeah, I'm still refining it, but it's a good start. My hope is to eventually be able to mount and unmount it by myself.
Are you able to leave the mattress in the RTT when it's closed up for traveling?
Yes, it works well. I can also leave a little bit of bedding as long as it's thin.
New subscriber. The link that you have in Amazon showed a different tent it showed a square like. Are you sure this the same. I want to order it but wasn’t sure.
Thanks for the heads up. Looks like they changed the link. I updated it in the video description so it should take you to the correct tent now. However they may change it again in the future.
there was no review
Thanks for the heads up. It looks like the layover audio track review didn't make it to the video. I posted the review in the video description.
@@RoofTopRoverOverlandingjust reupload.
New subscriber! I have a Black Series Sergeant Trailer. Went to get it cleaned up for camping. The whole thing is mold. Bad mold that will not clean up. Trashed the tent completely. Looking to pirchase a roof top and saw you video. For the price it looks great. Just me and my wife. How has it held up since you got it? Any leaks, tears? How does it hold up in the wind and rain? Thanks
Thanks for subscribing! Sorry, your old tent was ruined. It's a shame when an expensive piece of gear needs to be replaced. I've had this tent on a few trips but haven't spent much time in it in the rain yet, so I can't speak to that point. But for this price point, the build quality is great. No fabric issues with tears or stitches. Handles wind, just fine. It is usually me and my wife that go on trips as well and for 2 people it's about perfect size. We are getting out again this coming weekend for another trip. I will start working on a usage review after this trip. But thus far, no big issues. The only issue I've had was with the rain fly pole. The hole wasn't drilled deep enough. But it's an easy fix. I posted a video on that if you want more info. Good luck with the new setup.
I have a similar regular rectangle shaped one in my RTT and use the same pump. While I love the pump, I wish the adapter was sold separately; the adapter also works with my paddleboard pump, which is way faster for inflation / deflation. With the pad deflated I can also keep all my bedding in the tent when its folded!
I agree. It's nice to be able to leave some bedding up there when you're on a multi day trip. I found that when I deflate the mattress in the tent, I fold it in half (long way) and lay on it. With the pump running, it deflates it in about 60s. Or we deflate it just before we get out of the tent for the morning, so when we go to pack it up, it's ready to go.
What pump do you have for the paddle board?
How’s the tent so far? Any condensation? How does it do in rain? Any regrets on this purchase? I’m really looking into getting myself one for summer use
I'm working on a follow-up video now, with what mods I've done and how it's performed, and what I'll be doing to make it better. But the short answer is no regrets on the purchase. I'd definitely do it again.
@@RoofTopRoverOverlandingany updates on the video you’re working on sir? Cant wait.
Awe man, I just ordered one of these from Bamacar and plan to use it on my channel for overlanding. Minor issue with a grommet?
Not to worry, it was an easy fix. I'd go ahead and drill it right away. That way, you won't have any issue. You will love the tent!
I appreciate your overview of this tent. I’m considering this for my Tacoma short bed. I’m curious about the plastic corners mating to the aluminum frame. Are these protective covers or part of the actual frame structure? If it’s part of the structure I’m not sure this will hold up over time? After you measuring the interior I’m no longer interested as it’s too narrow for my needs. So thank you for that!
From what I can tell, they may help a little with structural support, but they are plastic connectors that connect the side aluminum rail to the front rail. It was probably cheaper and easier to manufacture instead of one solid rail that was bent to go all the way around. Thus far, I have seen no concern as being a weak spot that could potentially fail. Everything feels very rigid on the fold out cantilevered platform.
That's an awesome upgrade
So far, it's one of the best upgrades! Super comfortable! I'm making a follow-up video about it.
An absolute great idea, but can you do a environmental video to show how well it does in the rain/winds?
I'm working on those soon. I'm also designing an annex tent that will use the awning as a modular system.
Just a heads up if you don't know. Naturnest just came out with a annex room for this tent. ($420.00)
Awesome! I'll look for it and check it out.
I just purchased the new annex. I will do a setup and review video once I get it.
Looks good. Just got mine today. Going on top of a truck cap with a Rhino rack. Seems like a great product especially for the price point
I agree! I've used mine several times now, and the more I use it, the more I enjoy it. For me, It's definitely better than my old soft top clamp shell tent. It's way easier to set up and tear down camp.
Im thinking of grabbing the Annex for this tent availabile on Amazon
I wasn't able to find an annex or awning for this specific tent. I just checked their site and don't see one yet. Do you have a link to it?
Just ordered mine, by the looks of the video i will be happy
I'm very happy with it. Especially for the price point. Fast setup and take down. Just what I was looking for.
Do you have the height when it's closed?
I didn't mention the overall height in the video. Your overall height is going to very depend on your mounting setup. The tent itself is 11 to 12 inches. With my mounting bars on my GOBI, it adds 3 inches. Also, if you need it, the distance between the mounting rails on the tent is 23.25 inches.
Do you have the closed exterior dimension?
Looks like you found my weights and dimensions video.
Thanks for reviewing this tent. I have a question regarding the hinging of the hardshell. Is it heavy duty so as to withstand wind gusts?
Yes, it has 3 fairly good-sized metal hinges. I just got back from a trip, and we had some gusty wind. It didn't have any problems.
Thanks for the info on the tent. Can you measure the distance between the mounting locations on the bottom brackets? I can't seem to find this info anywhere and want to make sure my roof racks will support this.
I just got back from a trip, so it's mounted in the Jeep. But I will measure it tomorrow and get you the info.
The distance between the mounting rails on the tent is 23.25 inches.
Thank you for the video. I have the same tent on my Jeep Gladiator. Loving it so far. My question is there any annex that would go with this particular tent?
Currently, there isn't one for this specific tent from the manufacturer. I bought an awning from OVS because it was cheaper than others and adapted it and the tent to work together. Here is my video on it. ua-cam.com/video/C7W4elib0BU/v-deo.html I have a link to the awning in the video description.
@@RoofTopRoverOverlanding I was actually watching your video. Very brilliant solution. Looks pretty original also. Thank you 🙏🏻
Thanks for the video, would love to see how you will be mounting it to your vehicle!!
Coming soon!
I seem to notice that in several pictures that I have seen that when the tent is shut it looks like it doesn't fasten all the way down very well. Like in the front right corner. Have you noticed this being an issue. I wanted to make sure this isn't an issue and possibly allow rain to get in when shut? I am thinking of selling my current tent and getting this.
I know what you're saying. There is about a quarter-inch gap between the tent shell and the platform. I'm taking a trip this weekend, and it is supposed to be a mix of snow and rain when we are driving. I'm about to see how it does.
@@RoofTopRoverOverlanding I would be interested in your feedback afterwards. Have a great trip!!
Just got back from my trip. We had 6 inches of snow, and I ran 70mph down the hwy. I had no issues with the top on the hwy, and when I opened the tent, there wasn't any snow or moisture in the tent. So far, so good. Also, it matters how tight you sinch the front and rear straps to how far it ultimately stays closed. It did really well once sinched down snug.
@@RoofTopRoverOverlanding thank you so much for the update. That is awesome! I have mine ordered. Hope you had a great trip!!
Had a great trip, I will post updates on gear and tent soon.
What size canopy did you use?
This is the awning I purchased. But you could use almost any 2+ person awning out there. overlandvehiclesystems.com/18189903-bushveld-ii-awning-for-2-person-roof-top-tent/
Wow! 138lbs!! I did not see that coming at all, was expecting the real weight to be in the 160lbs. Seems like the stated 195lbs on amazon is shipping weight. Thank you so much for this video, Naturnest needs to sponsor you, great sir!
I agree on both accounts. 😄
Probably because it comes in a wood box
Thanks for the video. What about the height? I have a Gladiator and not sure what height rack I want to put on it - not sure how much I want it to stick up above my roof.
The overall height is going to very depend on your mounting setup. The tent itself is 11 to 12 inches. With my mounting bars on my GOBI, it adds 3 inches. If at all possible, for best aerodynamics, I'd try to get it as low as possible. But at least try to get the leading edge of the tent below the roof of the Gladiator so only the top 7 inches of the tent are above the roof.
Thanks for the videos. Keep them coming. Looking forward to some reviews after you have put it to use in the field.
Thanks, I have a trip coming up next weekend that I plan to do some usage reviews on.
I'm so glad you measured the interior dimensions, which is critical information.
Yep, that was the info I was looking for when I was considering it. I just got a new air mat for it that is contoured about the same shape as the tent. I'm preparing to do a review on it.
Mine arrives friday!! Thanks so much for the video. I wasn't sure I was getting hardware.
Glad I could help! I hope you enjoy it. I just finished making my awning, and it turned out great. I'm editing the video now to share with others.
Great review! Thanks! Can you advise of the shell dimensions when closed? I have a 5 foot bed with a bedrack and wondering if it will protrude past the tailgate. I couldn't find the shell dimensions on Amazon.
I have a similar bed rack as yours. This was my question too. When you ask that question on Amazon AI-generated answer says: "The dimensions when closed are 62.99" L x 43.30" W x 11.02" H. I have tried to contact customer service to verify this answer, however they haven't got back to me! Well, I went by AI answer and pulled the trigger two days ago. Hopefully I will receive it on Feb 9. Good luck
Just measured the top closed, and it's L = 64" W = 46"
Thank you!
Hello. What kind of roof rack did you use
I have a GOBI rack on my Jeep that I will be mounting it on. I'll post a video this week on that.
Thanks so much for the video!
Glad it was helpful!
@@RoofTopRoverOverlandingbtw, do you know how much does it weight? It said 195lbs on amazon
I saw the same on the Amazon description. It's definitely not a hundred ninety-five pounds. I'm guessing that's the shipping weight. My 15yo son and I could lift it onto the saw horses with no problems. At this point, I'd guess right around 150 to 160. I'm trying to figure out a good way to weigh it.
