Journaling, part 3
Pennebaker's journaling studies asked participants to write about an emotionally upsetting event. The participants wrote about the event for 15-20 minutes over the course of four days. The participants that wrote essays which became more coherent over the course of the four days, were physically and emotionally healthier 4-6 months later. Here are some examples of the characteristics of their e...
Talking points for parents when talking to teachers
Parents can be academic partners and collaborators - it's gotta be okay for us to ask questions about what we don't understand so we can understand it better and support our children at home.
Parenting & Family Therapy

My first clinical supervisor, Reevah Simon, LCSW, taught me about exploring parental ambivalence. That is, exploring ideas parents have about why children break family rules and why parents tolerate it instead of changing it.

Reflection Questions for Parents about their own Resilience
The resiliency wheel is usually applied to children - that is, how to support the growth and development of children. In this video, I invite parents to reflect on their own resilience. Bowlby said if we value children, then we must cherish parents. Parents, I treasure and cherish you.
Describing Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET)
When I first read about NET, I thought it was genius. How do we serve entire communities when the PTSD rate is 50% and there aren't enough licensed mental health professionals to go around? NET has been scientifically tested with the most rigorous research design (randomized control trial) and it works for adults and children. It can be led by trained lay providers (i.e., other refugee camp res...
Goal Setting

I don't know many providers who think goal setting and treatment planning is the most fun and easy stage of the helping process. I love it. Here is my take on how it can be more fun for clients and providers.
Pennebaker's journaling study with college students
I love telling stories about research studies. This Pennebaker study left a big impression on me. His theory of inhibition and confrontation guided by dissertation study. It also resonated with how I was raised by my mother, Irene Acuña, from Chihuahua, Mexico, where people are know for being frank. I'm grateful to my mom for privileging open communication in our relationship. It saved my soul.
A story about the impact of completing the ACEs questionnaire
I heard Dr. Felitti speak at a conference several years ago and this story about the power of confrontation and disclosure on the health of his patients inspired me to continue talking about it. Thanks to my mom, Irene Acuña, who taught me it was okay to talk about everything with loved ones.
Bowlby on parental storytelling & attachment security
When I first read about Bowlby's study describing how the way a parent tells the story about their childhood predicts the attachment security of their children, my brain exploded. I wanted to lead writing workshops for parents and caregivers. Let's put the past to rest by writing a coherent narrative with the good, bad, and horribly beautiful details. This video summarizes the study findings.

This channel is an excellent idea. Can't wait to see more of y'alls stuff however, I was wondering if you could dub this in Spanish? My parents aren't very good readers so the subtitles aren't very helpful to them especially since they're kind of fast. Also can the name of the videos be both in English and Spanish? For a moment I thought this vide was only going to be in English. Overall, I like that this channel exists. Thank you. :)
