Welcome to Asian Soup Podcast - every ingredient is welcome!
How often are you lost in translation? Are you bilingual, trilingual, or communicate often with bilingual family members? In our season 2 finale Asian Soup Podcast episode, we have our special guest Inah join us to chat about different expressions in Japanese, Jules shares phrases in Korean, while Rox relates her experiences with Cantonese.
As Asian Australians from different backgrounds, we have a casual conversation to connect and understand more about each other. What translates to English and more often than not, what just can’t be translated?
Grab a bowl and join us for a casual and light-hearted chat about the different experiences with the mother language we’ve had while growing up in Sydney, Australia.
Hope you enjoy another catch-up with us :-)

I was born and bred in Sydney, love this city, I am a Sydney Boy to my soul, But I’m so over how expensive everything is now. Also, Sydney has lost its Soul; it's no longer a friendly place to be. anymore.

We use these over here for people's names. David = Dave/Davo William = Bill James = Jim Robert = Bob Elizabeth = Liz Michael = Mike Charles = Chuck Patricia/Patrick = Pat Edward = Ed Joseph = Joe A bit mindful using Macca's and Arvo, not everyone knows these terms 😂. Depends who I speak to I guess. I use a lot of idioms as well. E.g. +A lot of ways to skin this cat. +She'll be right. +Beat around the bush. +Break the ice. +Cost an arm and a leg +Hit the nail on the head +Under the weather +Let the cat out of the bag +Burn the midnight oil +Barking up the wrong tree +Spill the beans +Piece of cake +Once in a blue moon +Raining cats and dogs +A blessing in disguise +Water under the bridge

NO! Cantonese is a LANGUAGE !! NOT a dialect!! The same as Shanghainese. Cantonese character and Mandarin character are NOT the same ! ! Not only the difference between traditional character and simplified character, but also the characters are also different! For example : They taking a bus to go home. Cantonese : 佢哋搭緊巴士返屋企 Mandarin : 他们正在坐公交車回家 So you can see this sentence, all the characters are DIFFERENT between two languages. Cantonese and Mandarin, not only pronunciations are different, but also tone, character, grammar are different. And their mutual intelligibility is 0 %! Linguistically, if they are mutually unintelligible, then they're different LANGUAGES, not dialects!! You'd better learn about Cantonese and the definition of "language" before talking about Cantonese and language.

Yes I'm from Hong Kong. My kids were born and raised here. My oldest kid used to reckon he's an Aussie and feel ashamed of being called Chinese. Not until he was in year 11 when his French teacher found him has a great talent on languages and asked him to do Chinese for VCE as well so he did and he picked up fast learning from scratch to be able to speak, read, and write Chinese. After he got into uni, he continued to learn Chinese, French, and even started learning less popular languages like Malays, Indonesian, Cantonese, Taiwanese. So he finally realized he has a gift of tongue, and became multi-lingle after years of studies, he got a job as a linguist from the government. I witnessed all his changes from being ashamed as a Chinese to being proud of his ethnicity, from hating Chinese food to now enjoying chicken feet. So kids would change when reaching to a certain age.

It's so hard to find a good Yum Cha restaurant here in Melbourne. They just fool the Aussies with something looks like dim sims. I know Sydney has a lot much better Chinese restaurants there.

That's me too, just stick to the Asian restaurant, and when my kid spent $65 for a lunch in a French restaurant, I said to him it's a waste of money for just some French fries, a piece of steak, and salad. I can make that for $10.

Congratulation on your 50th video!!Keep it up mates! In English, the word "bitch" means like a mean girl, but in Japanese, the word "bitch" means a slut, and that difference makes me laugh. No offense, but 80 minutes for one video are too long. You guys should shorten the length. I'm one of the biggest fans of this podcast so just for your information.

I went to the Japanese Saturday school in Sydney from year 1 or something and got to know Japanese friends including Tomo,Ben(that half Japanese half Aussie guy do you remember?). The city I live in Japan is famous for a number of foreign residents. There are also some Korean residents in my apartment. At least there are two Korean restaurants nearby as far as I know.

Hello dear, I hope you are well. I visited your youtube channel(Asian Soup Podcast), your videos(podcast) are very nice, I’m enjoying it. For your kind information, your channel is not growing fast because your videos are not reaching your target audience.I noticed your UA-cam channel is not updated and your videos are not SEO.Your video and channel tags are not SEO friendly and viewers are not easily able to find your video through these types of tags. If you want to promote your videos to your target audience and grow your channel fast to monetize then you need to update your channel with all video SEO. Then your youtube channel will reach millions of people and your UA-cam channel will get regular subscribers and views, watchtime will increase.

Not the type of channel I'd normally watch but I'm disgusted by the housing market despite personally benefiting from it. We need a conversation about immigration driven demand affecting young people like yourselves. Young people are getting let down by policy makers and the university migration complex. People should be able to make life choices which include living in the same state as their family and friends and being able to afford starting a family. The fact you aren't more upset about the situation is commendable because I'd be absolutely furious. My only advice would be to get as financially literate as you can and put that knowledge to work because I can't see this changing in a meaningful way. Good luck.

Cost of living has rised practically 30% compared to 2020 in Japan, and also in Japan, the wage is not catching up to the cost of living'rise. In Japan, buying and living in an apartment is so common that what you guys said like you guys don't wanna buy an apartment in Australia was surprising to me. I didn't know educational system in Sydney was that hard! When I lived in Sydney, the primary school I went,I didn't feel any pressure at all so I've thought educational system in Sydney was easy going. I got transferred to a national primary school in Tokyo after I moved to Japan,I think it's like a selective school in Japan, almost all the kids were from a rich family and my household was the sole poor one I guess, and that was traumatic to me.

    • @asiansoup

Kids from poor families can't afford tutoring so they can't get into a good school and can't get good marks to get into university to study medicine, laws, engineering.... those Asian favorite career. The kids from rich families can afford anything so they get best education and the best career. Poor gets poorer, riches get richer..... but I feel proud of my kids that they did exceptionally well with their high school and university without any tutoring because I can't afford it as a parent. So life is not destinated although you're not from a rich family.

Is it really taboo to get divorced in Korea? In Japan, one out of three people get divorced so divorce is not a big deal and some of my friends have already got divorced actually. If I were a divorcee and I was looking for another partner around 40 years old, definitely location would be my top priority. I don't wanna leave Kanto area, and I can't live in any other area in Japan. It's almost impossible but one of my dreams is to appear on Joe Rogan Experience as a bipolar disorder patient!!
