On the 2nd watch thru, when everything clicked i shouted in excitement

The movie doesn't work well for two main reasons. First, the damn audio mix. I get the idea of quieting things that aren't meant to be important, but the experience in the theater was made worse for it. Do it with the camerawork, not the volume. Second, the structure of the film undermined its emotional resonance. If we aren't introduced the the characters as dynamic people with hopes an dreams and multiple dimensions, we don't care about them much. The movie becomes just plot. So when most people watch the movie for the first time it doesn't land. The big fans of the film say that it just takes watching again (or a few times more), but I think most people know how that's a weak basis for a first-time viewer, and an annoying one for anyone who was expecting to not have to watch the movie again to feel transported by it. Ultimately, the movie's framing device gets in its own way and most viewers are left cold as a result.

Little known fact: Chris Nolan was so dedicated to the time illusion that he filmed the entire film backwards. The actors had to learn their lines in reverse. You barely notice it because they’re so talented.
