Ozu films are very deep and full of meaning. His use of the tea ceremony in the beginning is, as you say, used to set up the dichotomy between traditional and modern life in Japan. But it is also illustrative of the concepts of the films themes overall. The tea ceremony is over 900 years old and the principles of the ceremony are Harmony, Respect, Purity, Tranquility. These are all central to the lives and the challenges of the characters. "Pillow Shots" is the name given to the still scenes by Roger Ebert, he understood that they were used to create a pause, but he missed that in the Japanese culture the philosophy of MA (間), in this case used as an artistic interpretation of an empty space. To bring attention to not only what is there, but also what is not there. In the still shot of the vase, it is Noriko's previous contentment that is no longer there.

Great comment! Thank you for bringing to attention the concept of "ma" (間) - "empty" (but "pregnant with meaning) space which IMO is important in viewing Ozu - not just visually but in terms of communication as well .. Sigh, "Late Spring" - maybe my favorite Ozu film

My favorite Ozu film. Bought the Blu-ray when it was released. Much better than the old DVD which wasn't restored.
