Kelso Guitar Vibes
United States
Приєднався 12 сер 2016
Hi Everyone! I’m Brett Kelso and thank you for kicking it with me on my channel. I’m a 24-year-old guitarist and very passionate about alternative rock, so here you will find guitar covers, gear reviews, and more from the alternative music scene. I’m hoping to eventually share some original material as well.
When I first learned about alternate tunings and discovered that many of my influences used them to write their songs, I was inspired to pick up the guitar. I have a series in YT Shorts called “Tuning of the Day” where I showcase an alternate tuning and the songs/theory behind it.
Be sure to hit the like and subscribe buttons!

Collective Soul - “December” - Guitar Cover
Переглядів 21919 годин тому
Tuning: E-Standard (440 Hz) From the album Collective Soul (1995) Since we’re in the month of December still, I figured I would cover this classic CS tune from their 95’ self-titled record. The whole album is one of my favorites and I’m hoping to do more from it soon as we are approaching its 30th anniversary in 2025. Thanks for watching! Gear used: McCarty PRS 594 1996 MJ Mirage Standard Ameri...
Collective Soul (Joel Kosche) “I Don’t Need Anymore Friends” - Guitar Cover
Переглядів 15114 днів тому
Tuning: E-Standard (EADGBE) (441 Hz) From the album “Afterwords” (2007) This was requested by my older sister Paige (28). It was one of the first times she had ever requested a song on the channel. “I Don’t Need Anymore Friends” is sung by former lead guitarist Joel Kosche who was with the band from 2001-2014. His guitar style is noted for its use of dual harmonies and extensive use of pitch-sh...
Kevin Cadogan - “A Million Times the Sky” - Guitar Cover

Tuning - Standard capo 1st fret I’ve wanted to cover this song for a minute now so here it is. Cool KC track from a while back. Hope you all enjoy. Gear Used: Kevin’s 1998 MJ Mirage GT Custom with sustainiac pickup Kevin’s 2000 MJ Mirage Catalina Boss Super Overdrive SD-1 Strymon Timeline Delay Strymon Big Sky Reverb Ampitube Red Pig Preamp All rights go to Kevin Cadogan.
Collective Soul - “Why Pt. 2” - Guitar Cover
Переглядів 283Місяць тому
Tuning: Drop C# (C# G# C# F# A# D#) 447 Hz This was requested by @stewartross13 and one I knew would be a lot of fun. I always dug “Blender” as I thought it was an interesting mixture of hard rock with pop undertones and some very creative guitar riffing from original lead guitarist Ross Childress. Why Pt. 2 is one of those songs where less is more. The main riff is very simple but its the spac...
Kevin Cadogan - “Angel Vs. The Train” - Guitar Cover
Переглядів 227Місяць тому
Tuning: Drop C# (C# G# C# F# A# D#) 432 Hz. Where do I even start with this track? Angel Vs. The Train has some of the most unique lead tones; replicating them was a total blast, especially the intro with the harmonics. I used my Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier for the high-gain rhythm sections and a touch of drive to boost the output even more. The solos in this song are absolutely insane effects, ...
Kevin Cadogan - “When the World Belongs to Love” - Guitar Cover
Переглядів 1602 місяці тому
Tuning: E-Flat Standard (Half Step Down) Covering a rather obscure song from Kevin Cadogan’s solo album “Wunderfoot” this week and I have to say this one is interesting. For starters, this song has a lot of strong dynamic changes all throughout as well as blending major and minor tones to shift the mood entirely. While the chord progression is relatively simple in this song, it's once again the...
Third Eye Blind - “Invisible” - Unreleased Track - Guitar Cover - #3ebGuitarCoverProject
Переглядів 3312 місяці тому
Tuning - Standard (EADGBE) I’ve had so many requests to do this song, so here you go! Recorded around the time “Out of the Vein” came out and never made the record. Tony threw in a lot of overdubs on the song, so I went ahead and did the same. Hope you guys enjoy, and as always like and subscribe for new content to come!

out of curiosity could you name your top 5 3eb songs?
1. The Background 2. God of Wine 3. Wounded 4. Narcolepsy 5. 1,000 Julys.
Hell yeah dude sixteen stone is one of the greatest records of all time
For sure! Had to do one of the big singles from that record. It’s one of those albums with no skips.
Great solo work on this one. Joel knows that guitar you’re playing!🎸
Thanks! Yeah he’s got quite a few of those.
It’s all octaves with this tuning it’s kinda cool
Yeah it’s a very interesting tuning👍🏻
Thanks for this. The dissonant strums in the chorus are really great - should have been featured more in the studio recording in my opinion.
No problem, yeah it’s an interesting track for sure.
I enjoyed the video thanks. Keep it up.
Thanks! Really appreciate it.
Great job....... great taste in music Sir
Thanks! Much appreciated.
banger and killed it
For sure! Thanks for tuning in.
seeing Bush on here is cool! i really love Warm Machine off of The Science of Things, Machinehead is up there too. good stuff!
Yeah that’s a great track and record! I wanted to do at least one song off the Sixteen Stone album since it turned 30 this year. It’s one of those records in my opinion with zero skip tracks. Thanks for tuning in!
Awesome Lesson! Ty and 2 thums UP! What a RIFF!
Thanks!
Man one of my favorites, I really wish they had sounded as good as this live Thanks. I need some good old collective soul this morning.
Thanks!
You can also play Kool Thing with just a capo on the 2nd fret in standard tuning!
👍🏻
One of my favorite songs. I’ve never attempted it, so I didn’t know about the alternate tuning, but I’ll try it!
Yeah it’s a great tune! The alternate tunings they use are wild but they are cool to experiment with. Be sure to tune to F# F# F# F# E B as opposed to what was said in the video. That was a mistake on my end.
Will you be playing his solo album?
Yeah I have a few songs I’m practicing from Fight Years. You wouldn’t last a day, sunrise, and always dreaming are the 3 I’ll probably do first.
Sounds great, I think it would be a great for running the dam
Thanks! I’m an avid runner. Been a minute since I’ve run the dam.
Fun fact: the reason Thurston Moore (and many guitarists from the 80s/90s) became associated with Jazzmasters was because they were really inexpensive. For Sonic Youth specifically, they had several guitars all tuned differently to save time.
That’s right! Really cool fact. Having the inexpensive gear can sometimes help.
Thank you to everyone for the positive feedback. I remember the night I was making this cover thinking It would get a few likes here and there but I never imagined this would be one of my most watched covers. Yes, I used Kevin’s Hollowbody Mirage to record this but I wouldn’t credit that as the reason I was successful with this cover. Years of listening to the recording and working on amp and pedal settings helped me in the long run, not to mention technique. Overall, it’s a great track and probably in my top 3 of 3EB.
My favourite song ever written
👍🏻
As a piano player that avoids learning fingerstyle songs cuz I'd rather play piano if I'm gonna use 2 hands, this song is the exception.
Haha it is a cool song. Funny enough the lead guitar parts in my opinion are easier since there is no finger picking at all.
Tuning this way with standard string gauges is a horrible idea
Yeah it’s a wild tuning (I actually had to correct it later on) but ideally you want go for a lighter set when tuning that high.
Very nice. I used to love watching Cadogan end this song in live performances by sliding the guitar across the microphone stand.
Thanks! Yeah this song rocked back then. Very different than the studio version since Kevin used way more distortion live.
Do you have the solo tab?🎉
I don’t make tabs but I can make a video for the solo. I’ll tag your username so you see it.
Oh my gosh, dude I’m such an idiot that explains so much about Sonic Youth. Sounds like they did something similar on parts of Sugar Kane also which is one of my favorite songs by them.
Yeah for sure! Their tunings are all over the place. I enjoy experimenting with different ones but they really pushed it to the limit back then. Not sure if you caught this from above in the comments but the correct tuning was F# F# F# F# E B. Just two strings that were off.
what guitar is thst
Line 6 JTV-69.
Thank you! So happy seeing this, one of my favourite Cadogan tracks.
No problem!
Love it man
👍🏻
Dude! possibly my favorite Cadogan track. I listen to this song all the time. Way simpler than I expected. Thanks for doing this
No problem! Yeah it’s a cool track and very easy to get the hang of. The solo is the only thing that requires some work since there is a lot of sustained notes but other than that very easy.
Are there any more guitars he owned floating around? I saw your post on reddit about these too just from googling, apparently there were some more on reverb? I love 3eb, it would be awesome to own a guitar that had some history with them.
Not that I’m aware of. Kevin owns around 4-5 of his touring guitars and the whereabouts of his other guitars are in the hands of collectors not players. Really sad but it is what it is.
The main riff in this song is so beautiful - love it.
It’s definitely one of a kind 👊🏻
Bro you absolutely NAILED this. Additional thanks for including the outro. Nice work homie 🙏🏽
Thanks! Yeah the outro has to be included!
Is that just a Strat?
It’s a Line 6 JTV-69.
man you nailed the recorded version! I always wondered though how KC got that sound @ 2:01 it sounded to me like a lower range harmonic on a few strings and pulling up on a tremolo kinda like Dimebad Darrell
Thanks! KC used a Musicman Sabre II on the debut album so I guess it was a combo of the wah and the amps feedback to create that unique sound as his guitars during the recording didn’t have a tremolo. I think that’s why he had the sustainer on so many of his MJ’s was so that sustaining with feedback would become easier.
That guitar is so sick, as is the playing...great job! I actually own one of Kevin's Crimson Snake Mesa Heartbreaker amps, complete with the road case! It's a permanent fixture in my home studio, the case has all the old 3EB contact info on one side and "Cousin Kevin" on the other. And the amp? Oh my goodness, it's a real ringer. Kevin knew how to pick em I'll give him that. I've owned more Mesas than I can count and none of them pulled off the liquid lead tone the way this Heartbreaker does.
Thank you! Really appreciate the comment. Mesa has some of the best sounding amps I’ve ever played. The heartbreaker especially. The tones you can get on them is unlike anything else. Kevin definitely has interesting taste in gear and doesn’t always go for the conventional choices of other players which I’ve always appreciated. I’m glad to have two of his MJ Mirages, they are bad to the bone and they are popular with the ladies when I play it live lol.
Always a pleasure watching and listening to someone recreate Ross Childress contributions to this great band. I feel it was a great loss when he left. *Dishwalla is a close second place as one of the greatest…although they weren’t together all that long.
Yeah Ross is a phenomenal player. Really elevated the sound of those first few CS records. Definitely the textbook definition of a lead guitarist. It’s been a minute since I’ve listened to Dishwalla but who could forget Counting Blue Cars? That song and record I always enjoyed.
@ Dishwalla had quite a few other good songs than their one hit. Check out ‘Home’; ‘Nashville Skyline’; ‘Until I wake up’.
Will do! Thanks for the recommendation👍🏻
😎
👊🏻
Killed it bro!
👊🏻
You should go over the pedals that you use for the TEB covers!! And out of curiosity, how did you learn all these songs was it by ear or tablature? I feel wicked inspired by listening to his guitar and you do great justice playing! I just learned Thanks a Lot all the way through and want to learn way more of their catalog!
I could do a video about the setup I have used once I have the right time to do so. I learned most of the songs by ear but sometimes I would have to go through an external source to make sure I was using the correct tuning. Kevin used to have a website and so did Tony so I would check and see what tunings were being used.
@ that’s so cool dude! You just inspired me to stop beating around the bush and try learning them by ear too. You rock dude, I love all the videos and keep up the great work
Legal demais, mandou muito bem!
Thanks!
I put this track after Good Man. It’s an excellent album closer.
Yeah it’s a great track for sure.
Tuning?
C# G# C# F# B E which is a half step lower than E A D G C F, the original tuning of the song. This is because it’s a demo and no official version was released.
Nice man!
Thanks!
Awesome job, Kevin deserves so much more recognition (and so do you for this fine work!).
Thanks, really appreciate it! Yeah, Kevin's style definitely deserves the recognition. Lots of time and effort went into replicating those tones!
Hell yea dude!! I wore this track out when it came out!
It's a great track no doubt! Thanks for tuning in!
Awesome job as always! 🤘🤘🤘
Much appreciated Ed! Thanks for tuning in! 👊🏻
I've always loved this song. I wish Kevin would tour or put out new music.
Same, one of my favorites. Hopefully will return to the stage someday. I know he’s been doing some smaller shows over the last two years but touring would be cool.
Absolutely killed it man Good stuff!!!!!
Thanks! Appreciate it.
Where did you learn what amps and effects to use?
Kevin used to have a website back in the day and I would read the interviews where gear was discussed. Live videos also helped.
@ Ah man, so basically lost 😭😆. Any idea what his website was called? Maybe the waybackmachine has them.
I think it was just KevinCadogan.com. The wayback machine has them or if you want to save yourself some trouble feel free to hit me up on one of my social media platforms and I can fill you in with all of the details.
@@BDKelso2000 Thanks homie!
