San Luis Rey Bike Path and Retirement Advice
By end of 2025, you'll be back into a Diesel and most likely upgrading to a larger fifth wheel. Brinkley does well at selling the "dream".
Its not how fast you can go up…its how well you can control the decent. I would miss the engine/transbrake on my diesel. I guess there may be something you can get to do that for a gas truck. I would probably have to put a supercharger on that 7.3 Godzilla just to give it the omph I am used to.
@@wb5mgr thanks for the comment. Agree with the high importance of control on the descent. We are using the 10 speed transmission for that. Have done a few 8% downgrades and has worked well so far. But we are still learning on that aspect. Thanks for taking time to contribute!
To stop it from binding just set the trailer brakes and back up the truck to take pressure off the 5th wheel jaws..
Are you towing it with the F250 or 350
@@chadkoller7809 it is an F-350. 7.3L gas engine 4.30 gear ratio.
Beautiful. The fifth wheel isn't bad either.
Hey! We are new to your channel! We too have never camped or owned an RV. We are looking to travel in the near future and we are looking at the Brinkley! We love the layout and the features. Can you please tell us what campground you were at in the video. The beautiful red rocks! Looks like Arizona or Colorado! Thanks again for your review! Safe travels!
@@cdrewsjr we love our Brinkley I don’t think you can go wrong with one. I think that video was Valley of Fire area in Nevada. Good luck on your search!
Beware of that moonroof they are notorious for the slide rails breaking and you could be stuck with the roof open and can't close it
If you really want to make a difference in the chucking then switch the 5th wheel to a Goosebox on your camper and use a gooseneck ball in your bed. I did this last year on my 2020 Keystone Cougar 25RES and I use the 4" offset ball and it completely eliminated the chucking. My next project is to replace the suspension on the camper to a Roadmaster slipper spring and shock system to get rid of some of the camper bouncing on some of the bigger bumps in the road. I have a 2020 F350 CCSB with the 7.3L and 3.73 gears. I usually average 9 to 10mpg when towing big grades and around 10 to 11mpg just about every else.
@@atvtinker01 thanks for the recommendation. Gooseneck is something we have to look into.
Just replaced the 6.7 diesel with a 7.3 godzilla. Should have done it sooner! Great truck!
I have both the Bullet and Timbrens on my Ram 2500. Love them both.
I GOT rid of my Godzilla get a diesel when you pull
Keep your payload under 90% and your tow weight at 12-13k lbs max. That will make your tow experience much more enjoyable than if you’re maxed out.
@@ClayLee-x1r thanks for that. We are for sure there on payload and tow weight will be right abt 13k - 13.5k. Thx
Great Video.... what is your GVWR of your trailer? Im looking for a 7.3 Super Duty... however each time I run the vin to get towing it seems the limit is at or under 14k
@@bryanharger6565 the GVWR of the trailer is 14,500. The trucks 5th wheel towing capacity is 21,400. I went through a lot of research on the capacity’s prior to purchasing. The Ford website has the towing capacity’s for the trucks on it. Also I have another video on our Channel that goes through all the math we used…it’s all in the last half of the video.
@@retirementlife4us485 I appreciate it and understand Ford website has specs but Im looking at ones I find on the ford vin towing site and the numbers I am seeing are insane. would you mind sharing your VIN privately so I can see the build and how you got such a great towing capacity? Im struggling on searching for a 7.3 and our campers GVWR is 13,980
Just to help my 2023 F350 Lariat Sport FX4 7.3 gas 3.73 rear non-ultimate super crew standard bed tow rating for 5th wheel and conventional is 18100lbs.
@@blackcamaroblack understand the ford towing specs, but I've looked at 100 7.3 gas trucks on the ford VIN towing calculator and they end up at about 11k towing capacity which is crazy. I will keep searching.
@@bryanharger6565 I just entered my VIN on the “Ford Towing Calculator Page” results were accurate for my payload and GVWR and CGVWR. It said my towing capacity was 20,995.
I’m really surprised how low the payload it for a gas F350. Our 2024 F350 Lariat Ultimate 6.7 powerstoke with the same bed and can configuration as yours has 4127lb of payload.
'21 F250 with 3.55 here and the 10 speed always finds the right gear for me on grades. I pull 10k easily and rarely get over 3k on the tach. I lock out 9th and 10th as 8th gear feels best at speed on the freeway and average 10mpg (12 mpg with my old 6.7 diesel). Very impressed with the 7.3!
I’ll keep my Freightliner sports chassis.
1.3 MPG?
😂😂😂😂😂👎
Yea these things drink and then you have to deal with gasers at the pumps vs pulling into a truck stop. The worst is when it downshifts into second gear on a decline. This is a perfect true to tow a bass boat, not a large RV.
We have a 3100 and had the exact same issue with the leveling system..or so I thought. The problem not reading the instructions thoroughly. We use large wooden blocks up front, then I was extending the legs until they nearly touched the blocks before leveling. That's a mistake. Need to leave a 3"- 5" gap so it has the adjustability needed to level itself. Once I did that, has never failed to work perfectly. If site uneven left-right, extend legs differently to keep that same gap before leveling. Love Love Love ours!!
@@HallnAK thanks for that suggestion. That is exactly what we do we lower the legs as close as possible to the block. So we will try your approach it would be amazing if that’s the fix!!! Thanks.
Great video. I was having some stuttering problems with my planer so i decided to look at some videos and your came up. I'm glad I took the time and looked at your. I saw that the drive chains for the rollers were very loose and had a lot of slop. Once I took everything apart I found that the roller shaft had eaten away half of the block and was very close to complete failure. It's baffling why they didn't put actual bearings instead of a solid block.
I will stick with my '24 Silverado, the 7.3L Godzilla is too expensive to operate. 10k limit is OK for me.
Do you have 6.6 gas or diesel
How so? 10k on that Silverado is going to get about that same gas mileage. Maintenance is about the same on both trucks, so what's costing more?
@@atvtinker01 Oh that is easy - fuel at the pump.
We tow our Z2900 with our F350 King Ranch diesel and absolutely love both. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Have you had the pcm updated for the low oil pressure at idle? If so how long did it take?
@@rockie307 no I am not aware of this…what is the “pcm update”?
Google Csp24b27 for super duty. Its alot to explain but basically all superdutys 2020 to 2024 need the pcm update for low idle oil pressure taking out lifters and cams if idled alot. Ive got a 2023 which i contacted ford about they said it needs to be updated but they add vins to the csp every quarter and mine still hasn't been added to the list. I'm pretty mad the dealership won't do it till ford adds the vin to the list but ford is in no hurry so I can't idle much. Worst part is ford isn't transparent about what could be a major issue.
@@rockie307 I don’t know why you would be mad at the dealership, it’s not their fault Ford hasn’t released the software update for your truck yet, there is absolutely nothing they can do until Ford has the calibration ready for your newer truck. Even if the FDRS showed a later calibration available for the PCM it may not be the one for this service message and even if it has the correct update they wouldn’t get paid since your truck would not show that available on OASIS
@CrkdFngrGngrBndt Because if you read the csp24b27 letter put out by ford it literally says the dealers shall do the pcm update even if the vin hasn't been added yet. I called ford themselves they say the dealers are supposed to do it without waiting for the vin to be added because they add them quarterly and they don't know when mine will be added and they can't do it manually. I'm mad at ford and the dealers who will not do what ford is asking them to do. Meanwhile, I'm driving around on a new truck that's doing damage that will probably take out the engine at 30 to 100,000 miles. According to ford themselves they update has been released and the dealers can do they'll they have to do is document it and they will get paid when the vin is added. Nobody cares about my engine or money but me. Supposedly, the update takes 20 minutes on the computer. The whole situation is pathetic. And I didn't know at the time about the issue but when I bought my truck the dealer pulled it around and left it idling for a hour straight while I was doing the paperwork. Didn't think nothing of it at the time but reading the manual break in procedure it says to not idle for long periods during the first 1,000 miles. Now I find out the thing can't idle at all without self destruction. Stressing over how much damage has been done already.
@ without seeing OASIS and seeing if your VIN has the FSA outstanding on the home page it would be hard to say but likely if your vin isn’t on the list, the program may not be attached to your VIN on fords site and again if not there isn’t anything they can do short of you paying for the software update and getting a refund once it hits OASIS. If you have received the letter then it should be, if your haven’t received the letter then your vin likely isn’t on the web.
What's your tank size? I know the 8' bed can have the big (almost 50 gal) tank. But parking the beast would be challenging.
I would be some disappointed if that truck could not tow that 5th wheel up a 6% grade. Heck that thing should be able to tow up a 9% grade all day....or at least until it runs out of fuel, which will be far less than all day mind you. continued safe travels.
@@ShawnPatterson402 thanks have went up a few short 8% and it did great. I went slow tho intentionally.
I have a '21 Tremor, so 7.3 and 4.30 gears. All stock... I have a 36 ft Montana and all up I sit just over 23k gcvw. I went 6000 miles last year over the western states. Steepest grades in Montana and Wyoming. A lot of altitude for most of the trip. Some grades 7 and 8%. No problems getting up, no over heats or big challenges. 9.5 mpg for the trip. 98% towing.

@@DeannaMeredith-l3n the back patio model is really nice. But we still really like and prefer our floor plan.
Good choice in vodka, Goose. Smart not to take delivery until furnace was corrected. I'll bet it would have taken longer, but they were motivated. Our tires were being lifted. We were able to recalibrate what the system considered level. It puts a little more weight on the wheels but doesn't try lift as much. We also use two 2x10 pieces under the low tires to get closer to level at the start. Still happy with your truck?
@@TraconWizard haha got to have good vodka to enjoy the sunsets!!! Appreciate the comments and tips. Still very happy with the truck as we are getting more comfortable towing I am finding the truck is doing even better.
Where did you get your Brinkley what dealership?
@@mneururer blue compass in San Marcos CA.
@retirementlife4us485 thanks for your video. I am curious about the 2-month delay once you tried to pick it up. Do you think that was a Brinkley issue or do you think that was a dealership issue? Or just an unfortunate situation bad luck
@@mneururer I wasn’t in a rush for the delivery so at first I didn’t mind the delay. But started to get frustrated as we wanted to get out and use it. I think the first few weeks the dealer really didn’t prioritize it. Then they tried to fix it and really did a lot. But it wasn’t till they really coordinated with Brinkley didn’t get fixed. I also reached out to Brinkley wanting them to help and they did. So I think maybe a little responsibility to go around. However it is fixed and working well and I do appreciate the dealer found this issue before I took delivery. Hope this helps.

@@ig3024 appreciate you sharing all that.
Thank you!
Tires on one side come off the ground leveling? To solve for that, make sure you are more level side to side before auto leveling the system. It's going to lift until it's level so if your close then it won't adjust past the suspension travel.
@@russellnell3474 thanks for that suggestion.
Did you guys have an independent pre-inspection done before the pick up?
@@celestezardeskas6510 we did not. We felt the reputation of Brinkley gave us confidence.
Thank you for your honest review of your Brinkley. As new Brinkley owners, who are full-timers, we are still in the honeymoon phase. However, it’s important to hear well-rounded viewpoints! Your rig is beautiful and thanks for the video!
Try lowering the front of your rig below the unhitch level then do the autolevel
@@RoadRunner2025-x2v thanks for the suggestion I will try it.
Lowering the front before auto level will mean it will not go back to truck height. It should be able to level front to back without lifting the rig. Side to side it more important to get close before you unhook. Possibly a problem if you are on a big uphill slope front to back I suppose.. if the front can't get low enough to level it can only compensate by lifting the back jacks further. Moral of the story, be close to level before you level
