Australia's and the Worlds longest reversible freeway is found in Adelaide linking Bedford park (south of the CBD) to Seaford Meadows.
Driving north bound late in the afternoon.

The South Eastern Freeway heading out bound from the start to Mount Barker. Located on the edge of Adelaide in South Australia and is that states first freeway built in the mid 60's. The Western Freeway from Melton to before Ballarat at Pykes Creek Reservoir. Apologies for the shaking camera, the holder was not right that day. Geelong Ring Road (formally known as the Geelong Bypass) Starts from the Princes Freeway at Corio and ends at Waurn Ponds. Construction started in Feb 2007 (was first plan was penned in 1969) and will be complete (in full) in 2013. For more information see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geelong_Bypass

That is unusual. Yes, looks like a cost cutting measure. Hopefully they finish the other direction before too long.
Its a bit of a joke we have with the South Australians... I would say that the government at the time simply didnt have the money. Some years ago there was a freeway in Perth that had stop lights on it due to the same reason (No money)
