Excellent video! Thank you so very much!
Thanks for the video! Do you have any advice on how to maintain transient clarity from a mixing perspective? Could you explain a bit more about why the transient examples shown above are so different? What's happened to the second one to make it sound so "blanketed"? Cheers!
excessive limiting, probably
Very useful! I often overlook this by reaching for more complicated tools when it's unnecessary, thanks for this superb tip!
🪄
you offer us in each of your tutorials, things that I did not even imagine to be so important. Mastering is a hidden science, which scares away neophytes like me. Thank you Thomas for this new year gift. /// 😎
Am I missing something here? Is this not exactly how we want LUFS to work? Encouraging taking advantage of the dynamic range and the stereo effect? I guess you could argue how much to balance the average (weighted average), say having a low volume intro or outro to "save" LUFS such that you can have a high volume part in your song? Spotify still take into account the true peak, to avoid distorsion and loudness normalize a full album as one when listening to the full album in order. Thus you can still make quiet songs on an album and have the loud songs on the album stand out. They do have the "Loud" profile (where I think they normalize to -11 LUFS), but I don't think many people are using that. And I guess people should be free to listen to the songs however they like, even though I would never use this myself.
I agree to some extent. Still, as a mastering engineer all these limitations and listening factors are «out there» - nothing that we can «control». We can however understand the technical aspects, and how they affect our work. All good intentions and expectations are highly complex interactions. Of course we factor those in, but that’s where «spreadsheets» and hard answers can’t really be found. The platforms process guidelines & media limitations, and how listeners eh… listen, aren’t «in our control». Still, there’s much we do know, so we can work with that knowledge for the best outcome. 😊
Thanks for the information. I appreciate how transparent you keep the content. Pun intended.
Very helpful information. Thanks a lot, Sofia & Thomas!
another reason not to use spotify
You could do it with earbuds, just takes a lot more work to get the broad low end adjustments differences down, once you do, its just minor tweaks material dependent after that. Start with a pro reference track with frequency analyzer to get the low end close, then the games begin, but you will get there, then the bulk of the tweaks needed will translate as a starting point.
Thanks
I tried the free version of this with 4 bands. The big problem I have is that every time I engage this the sound becomes dull and lifeless, almost like the dynamics disappear from the music. Almost like it's loosing the punch. Is this a plugin-problem, or a setting I need to change?
Good stuff.
Great vid. Very clear! You can clearly hear the difference. Love it. After hearing the examples, I would've liked you to expand on how you go about finding the musical release time. What's the process? What are you listening for? Should the release be fully back to zero by the time the kick or snare hits again? Or should it be still releasing slightly? I'd love to see a video where you go through 4 different song examples and choose a release time for them all on the fly in real time, and just talk us through what you're listening for and what made you choose it Cheers! This is definitely one of the best mastering channels out there. Definitely deserves more views
Really like this format of video with the examples and the giving the viewer time to figure it out first. Good learning method. Well done!
Great video!
Thank you!
Part 3?
This is the first explanation and demonstration I have found of what determines the dots (sample point) positions and thus what the meter display actually means. Must have seen 20 videos and webpages up to this point, all generally leaving it at 'if the blob isn't horizontal, you're good'. One piece o f information the other videos invariably leave out is what determines the distance of the dot from the centre of the scope (answer: input level/volume). This video actually shows that, by showing the moving dot in slow motion and being able to see the input signal.
Hi there - new sub here 🙂 A quick question please... I've heard many mastering engineers say that they use 2 limiters when mastering to 'distribute the load'. If Limitless is 2 x limiters in one, does that eliminate the need for an extra compressor? Thanks.
The only chain that works is a correction curve for the headphone model followed by a harman kardon curve equalization for the headphone and then can opener. Happy new year. 🎉
TDR are so underrated like WHAT
Very useful, thanks
Nice work and explanation Sofia
Thank you!
That was exactly what I wanted to find from my Google search on this plug in. Well done sir.
a few weeks later I listen to this video again .. 1) my opinion on compression has changed 2) I hear the differences better 3) often my previous mixes had this type of error ... and I didn't like the result without knowing why !!!! So what else can I say? thank you Sofia and Thomas it's a real pleasure to have crossed your virtual path. from France
Thank you for this wonderful comment! So glad to hear the transformation. ⭐️ Joyeux Noel! /Sofia
Lol. While comparing i noticed only slight change of loudness, and wanted to ask - what's the difference? And later i got i was right on that. Just mixing experience 😂

Amazing video! Question, did you Paul Stretch the features track to make the background ambience?
thank you!

Great examples. Nice demo.
Is there a plugin that can measure the signal-to-noise ratio?
