Naturalistic psychedelic use and health in communities of color – Grant Jones
Psychedelics are gaining increased attention in both clinical research and popular culture as they represent novel treatments for a host of difficult-to-treat mental health conditions (e.g., PTSD, depression). Much of this interest has been driven by a number of groundbreaking clinical trials that have demonstrated the possible therapeutic efficacy of these substances in carefully controlled treatment settings. However, these trials have two key limitations. First, they have limited ecological validity (i.e., these findings might not generalize to real-world settings). Second, they feature a severe dearth of participants of color.
On April 2024, psychology researcher Grant Jones presenting in a webinar organized by the Finnish Association for Psychedelic Research (Psykedeelitutkimusyhdistys ry). The talk addresses his research that aims to address the limitations of existing research, providing an overview of his research findings in the field of naturalistic (i.e., non-clinical, real world) psychedelic use and health in communities of color, and the key next steps inspired by this existing research.
Deviating from our typical webinars, the full length of the event is one hour, with the lecture followed by the event host, psychology professor Markus Jokela, presenting his initial reflections on the presented research and then followed by an audience discussion segment.
About the speaker:
Grant Jones is a contemplative, musician, and a researcher writing his PhD thesis in the Clinical Psychology PhD program at Harvard University. His research is focused on better understanding how altered states of consciousness play a role in the flourishing of underserved communities. Currently, his research focuses on three core areas - meditation, music, and substance use - and investigating the relationships that these domains share with the well-being of individuals with diverse identities. His substance use research has particularly focused on psychedelic substances like psilocybin (the active compound in “magic mushrooms”) and understanding whether naturalistic (i.e., non-clinical) use of these substances is associated with lowered odds of adverse mental health and behavioral outcomes.
His research uses a number of approaches to study altered states, including epidemiological survey studies and intervention trials. His research has been funded by grants from the Harvard Culture Lab Innovation Fund, the Source Research Foundation, the Harvard Psychology Department, the Mind & Life Institute, and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Additionally, his research has been recognized through awards from the Ford Foundation, the Society for Research in Psychopathology, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Addictive Behaviors Special Interest Group (SIG).
About the host:
Markus Jokela is a professor of mental health research at the University of Helsinki. His educational background is in psychology, sociology, and public health. In his research, Jokela has explored how individual psychological differences are associated with social behaviors that influence population dynamics, e.g., health inequalities, selective residential mobility, and family formation. This research is based on longitudinal studies collected in many different countries. Jokela wants to promote a broader understanding of mental health that considers not only the diagnostic approach but also wider themes of humanity, such as humanistic, existential, and spiritual perspectives. In 2024, he also serves as a board member of the Finnish Association for Psychedelic Research.

EMBARK Psychedelic Therapy: a New Open-Source Model - Alex Belser
The conventional history of psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) research has been criticized for things such as missing critical histories of harm and the stories of marginalized groups, and a lack of focus on key therapeutic elements such as therapist-participant relationship, attentiveness to the body, counseling for spiritual experiences, and ethical considerations. On March 2024, psychologis...
How do psychedelics induce neuroplasticity and therapeutic effects? - Rafael Moliner

Recent studies have shed light on the potential use of psychedelics such as LSD and psilocybin for depression. While known for their quick and lasting antidepressant effects, the hallucinogenic properties of these substances, with the risks inherent to them, may limit their widespread clinical adoption. Recent research indicates that some of their therapeutic benefits might be harnessed without...
Psychedelics for Human Suffering: A New Paradigm for the 21st Century - Charles S. Grob

Clinical research on psychedelics has come a long way from its origins in the middle of the 20th century. One of the key figures in the current revival of psychedelic research is psychiatrist Charles S. Grob, who has, since the 1990s, conducted important research on ayahuasca and psilocybin, amongst others. On December 2023, Dr. Grob talked about the history of psychedelic research and the impl...
Hallucinogens as tools for belief transmission - David Dupuis

The use of psychedelics in the collective rituals of numerous indigenous groups suggests that these substances are powerful catalysts of social affiliation, enculturation and belief transmission. This feature has recently been highlighted as part of the renewed interest in psychedelics in Euro-American societies, and seen as a previously underestimated vector of their therapeutic properties. GRATITUDE
Thank you Dr Grob for this fascinating, informative, and comprehensive overview. Your clinical, scientific, and ethnographic experience is well grounded in data and matched with your wisdom in importance to attending to appropriate care. I also share your concern and honor your opinion that the therapeutic use of these potentially healing substances should be safely guarded from profit enterprises. As our understanding of neuropharmacology expands I applaud your tenacity in academically pursuing your research despite cultural and political obstacles. Your work has been a bridge to the future and if done wisely as you suggest can be transformative for many.
Se on "graadu"
So it seems if you take too much psychedelics you have a probability to become more or less unhinged. Whether you join a religious sect, or a left-wing (XR) or right-wing (MAGA) terrorist group is probably up to personality and environment.
Hei. Olisi hyvä jos näihin saisi suomenkielisen tekstityksen 😊
Hei @erjatuomola7720! Applen puhelimilla).
@@Psyty Kiitos vastsuksesta. Kokeilen 😊

I don't know who you are and I see I'm your first Like, but media representation of Stuff is a subject that's been on my mind since the Sixties. I'm composing a response in my notes and will get back to you after I've listened and written. ("Contact high" for drugless intoxication. Or "religious experience"? 😂❤)
Keep em coming, thank you.
Hollannissa on tolkku tämänkin asian suhteen.
It isn't made legal for therapy because it works. Big pharma doesn't want to sell any drug that cures , they want a drug that suppresses symptoms and you have to take the rest of your life at an exorbitant cost . My experience of WHY it works is as follows - the drug produces a genuine subjective background of peace, bliss and a total lack of fear . this calm yet alert state allows the therapist to introduce the memory of the stress /trauma on the face of this peaceful state .there is little to no fear in facing the trauma which signals the mind , emotions and the physiology to release it . sometimes a "cure" can be obtained in only one session . if not then only a few more is needed . truly remarkable and a gift not something to be made illegal .

The great Cambodian rainforest massacre. Most E in Europe is made from a 1 step precursor made by boiling the trees down in Cambodia and se asian rainforest. Its massive ...it leaves mayhem in its wake. 1 litre of raw tree oil sells for thousands of euros in Amsterdam. Its happening now. Its basically tree hugging..ive seen them hugging lamposts.. by burning down rainforest on a massive scale. Its rampant. If you are using E.. please research this crazy massive problem..and search your conscience. If you are using European E..it starts by burning up rainforest....go hug a tree

I am a Veteran with severe PTSD & chronic depression. I’m watching this 1 hour after taking 100mg of ketamine + 6 hits of cannabis. They complement each other by recalibrating my brain for 1-3 hours at a time. 14:00 21:00 return to baseline ~10 days post ketamine treatment. My return to baseline after 300mg 3 hour ketamine infusion is around 3 days but the VA will only give me the infusions once every 6 weeks. 22:30 Crucial importance of Sleep after ketamine 👌 24:30 Sleep is the price of plasticity

The first time I took LSD I jumped out of a window (in the early 1970s). It wasn't because I thought I could fly. I was sneaking out of the house late at night.
The STUDENTS "that stared at the sun and went blind" WAS NOT A REAL STORY. I'm not saying it couldn't happen but the incidents we heard about in the 60s ALL turned out to be apocryphal. I even looked it up on Snopes and it was deemed "false"... Even though it was repeated on a 1967 episode of Dragnet. Joe Friday lamented the Santa Barbara students who went blind staring at the sun. But it IS true that people HAVE done crazy stuff on ACID. It's usually on a case-by-case basis, meaning the ONE PERSON in the group who has a psychotic break with reality COMPLETELY. Hamilton, I know you are considerably younger than all of us who grew up in the '60s, but those of us who did mostly know the "sun gazer story" is false. But your point is well taken.
Why nobody explains first that D M T-----what the word-letter DMT stands for.

It is a religious experience, particularly the collective consciousness/collective love that you feel. That is actually God, which is essentially everywhere at once like an omnipresence. This is also why you can feel the antithesis at times when you experience said omnipresent love.

His brain exploded after he took the last newest drug. End of story.
I live in Williamsport Pennsylvania. These experiences that you speak of are illegal in the US. I started a meditation practice in 2010 simply to reduce stress from my very busy anesthesia practice. I quickly became very devoted to meditation. My practice moved into deep trance hypnogogia and OOB experiences which caused profound changes in my life. Having had only a scientific view of life, I was not prepared in any way to incorporate the experiences I was having and continue to have presently. I have never experienced hallucinogenic drugs external to my body, but clearly my brain chemistry was offering me what was needed to cross over. The worlds and beings that you speak of are real. These experiences completely changed my life. I started a hypnosis practice because of it. My world view now includes a spiritual life. Nothing is linear anymore. The layers are infinite. It would be easy to disengage from the physical world. There was a period of time that I was doing that for many hours per day, sitting upright in a chair that did not offer head support. Eventually I found my balance between the physical world and the world of expanded consciousness. Thank you for your work. Freedom of mind is worth the effort. Sincerely, Colleen Fritz

Olen aikanaan hoitanut itsetuhoisia potilaita.
I think this topic is interesting, the how ever the compounds being discussed actually occur naturally, in a near death experience I had, the A2 receptor did its job when I was near death, the experience was the warmth I had never felt, my assumption was something perhaps like a mothers womb, a sense of undefinable confidence as there was no materialism, completely void of tangiability, the dmt compound should be used for some people who are in transition to death, I believe it would help family, but most importantly the person who is on the voyage or transition to death,,, a wonderfully compound for many purposes,,, the stigma of these compounds that can help all people of the world was created through the Nixon administration,, a sad blindness created by stupidity and arrogance
I'm wondering if this is the same is this the same guy or boros of the people that run the multi-disciplinary psychedelic studies in Santa Cruz if so that would be fantastic when they group
