Were there different dogs used in the movie? If so, then I don't think the Shadow that came over the hill was the same one that fell in the hole.

Try not crying or tearing up - that would be extremely difficult to do, even if you watched this over a hundred times and you know what is coming

Back in 1994, I was serving in the USMC. We were deployed to Haiti during Operation Uphold Democracy. We had been fighting hard and we were tired, hurting, and missing home. We always had movies to watch and I’m sitting there resting with the other Marines when this movie comes on. I had read the book and saw the original movie as a kid, so I knew the story. Anyway, it’s several hundred of us watching this movie and there we are, all watching and when we got to this point, the entire room was silent. When Shadow came over that ridge, someone had cut up a few tons of onions. The whole chow hall is crying. All of a sudden, someone calls out “effing onions!!” We all laughed. 😭😭

My aunt had the tv show JAG on in the background at her place, and something in the music sounded familiar. I thought it sounded like the Homeward Bound music. So i googled the composer, and yep, Bruce Broughton composed both scores. I looked up and found the musical track that plays during the reunion scene here, and played it for my mum and aunt so they could hear the similarities to the show. And I IMMEDIATELY started crying. Caught me totally off guard. Like, the first notes started, and I went "oh NO" as my eyes immediately started misting, and by the time the horns come in when Shadow and Peter start running towards each other I was outright SOBBING. My aunt was like "ARE YOU OK WHATS HAPPENING" and I, through heaving and unstoppable tears, had to try to convey that yeah I was fine it's just that the scene the music belongs to is so beautiful and so touching that it can make me sob into my hands while sitting on the floor of my aunts loungeroom more than 20 years after I last saw the scene in question.

Just watched this with my 4 y/o son the other day. He cried at all the parts I cried at when I was a kid (even got me going when the family first drives off without the pets), and then with this we were both just bawling. I will never not cry at this part. Almost 36 and it still just wrecks me.

Don't ever do a "try not to cry" challenge on this ending. You'll fail every time!!! I know I do!! Lol

Every time I see this scene I am so mad at those people. When the first dog came over the hill they should have all gone that direction looking for the other pets. The "oh well maybe he just didn't make it". Bull!! Go find your pets!

My dog hates me when I watch this movie. I cry, I laugh, I hug her so tight, I relax, cry again. Then cry happily. She has to roll her doggy eyes--"momma is whacko"

This is why you should never leave your pets while angry at them or leave them at someones they don't know house because a pets love is a strong bond and ok i admit i named one litter of pups after these three with an extra Shadow was the oldest then Chance then Hershey then Sassy the order the pups were born in

I have a love/hate relationship with this movie. It’s so well made and has a touching ending, I can’t stand Sassy falling down the waterfall, chance getting porcupine spikes in his face, and shadow falling down in the ditch and being unable to get out for so long. I like the second one better. It has some sad moments as well, but not as much as this one. Plus chance finds true love 💕

I love Chance. My husband and I have a pitbull named Abby and she is the best dog ♥️ pitbulls forever! They are completely misunderstood.
