Dr. Chandreyee Maitra - vocal
Laura Patchen - tabla
Deniz Schelfi - tanpura
Performed at Berlin Raga Tribe´s Baithak concert #50 entitled "Women in Raga music" held on 27.04.2024 at BRTs headquarters.
Chandreyee Maitra began her musical training with Pandit Nidanbandhu Bandopadhyay at the tender age of five. Pt. Bandopadhyay was a student of Ustad Mehdihussain Khan of Rampur, KG Dhenke of Gwalior and Pt. Ramprasad Misra of the Benaras Gharana. Pt. Nidanbandhu's style was a unique amalgam of different gharana styles, which he generously imparted to his students. In addition, Chandreyee also received Dhrupad training from her mother, the well-known Dhrupad singer Barna Maitra, herself a student of Pt. Satyakinkar Bandopadhyay from the Bishnupur Gharana. Currently, Chandreyee is being taught by internationally renowned singer Pandit Vinayak Torvi (Gwalior & Kiranan Gharana). Dr. Maitra is equally familiar with Dhrupad, Dhamar, Kheyal and Tarana compositional styles. Chandreyee has performed at numerous prestigious events in India and Europe. She currently lives in Munich as a staff scientist at the Max Planck Institute and also teaches Indian music in the city.
Laura Patchen, born in New York City, came to Berlin in 1977. Here she began learning tabla in the guru-shishya parampara system with the late master drummer, tabla tarang soloist, sarod player and composer Pandit Kamalesh Maitra. As his master pupil, she accompanied her mentor onwards from 1978 on his numerous concert tours throughout Europe, to the USA, China and India. In 1979 she began performing in Maitra’s formation Drums of India and in 1980 became a founding member of his Ragatala Ensemble. Taking on a contemporary approach, this group performed Maitra’s compositions based purely on the classical music of India, integrating both European and Indian instruments. She began teaching 1985 in Berlin. Since 2005 she has been giving classes at the state-run City West music school, was appointed in 2011 to the then newly founded Global Music Academy, and has been responsible for the tabla department at the state-run Fanny Hensel music school since 2018.She directs and composes for the Tabla Ensemble Kamalesh Maitra. Parallel to performing classical Indian music, she has also lent her tabla sounds to music groups of various genres and projects involving free improvisation. Laura appears on several MC, LP, und CD recordings.

Surbahar, IMHO, is one of the most underrated instruments in the ICM realm. It gives me immense pleasure and childish excitement to see that being played so beautifully, that too overseas. The Veena jugalbandi is just a whole different level. Kudos to the maestros and wish to see more of these, and if you guys are open, we can also host you in the UK.
My gharama of dhrupad, dumraon, Bihar, India. So rag malkauns ,I believe,is belongs to mall State where malliks of Bihar are developer of this rag specially, my forefathers were malli of mall State near kushinagar,up.this rag malkauns takes upto upper state of mind. Both of you are doing so nicely.
When many of th Indians nt evn knw abt a classical music in India prevailing in th name Drupad, this one an All non Indians performing a Drupad instrumental music jugalbandi….
Incredible!!!
❤
my fevorite sada bahar raag!

What a great group you have there! Hope you were able to continue studying and playing during the pandemic.
wow, an incredible audio voyage!
Thanks Miklos! There is nothing like a compliment from the sitar ministry.
Great 🎉
Thanks !!!
No word to express, at least more than excellent. Thanks lot!! More of other ragas expected, please. Thanks.
.. very beautiful (like Bhimsen Joshi style is) 💐
Magical meend !!
Awe inspiring performances in this 'movie for the mind' (to paraphrase) superb sound and visual. True to the nuances of raag and more! The symbiosis between the players is 'more than human'(to paraphrase again!).
Wow! From the first note of the veena, I could hear your taleem. Kya baat. Who are your teachers? Beautiful playing
তন্ময় হয়ে রইলাম কতক্ষণ ..❤❤
Very nicely played.
দুর্দান্ত!! অতুলনীয়!! আশা করছি, কলকাতায় আপনাদের live performance দেখতে পাব। ❤❤ Participation par excellence. ------ Eindrucksvoll!! Unvergleichlich!! Ich hoffe, Ihren Live-Auftritt in Kalkutta zu sehen. ❤❤ Partizipation par excellence.
Very nice , the accompaniment on pakwaj is simple and excellent
❤ Who are the artists ? Nobody has asked this question 😮

The whole world is merged in vibration, it is the devotion that makes vibration come alive ! The musicians are seekers !
Lovely.
I love those bass notes and tones from both instruments. Very immersive. My pranaams to ALL the artists involved in such immense recording. <3
Beautifully done jugalbandi, maestros! Also, one the most magnificent jhala movements I’ve yet heard. 🙏🏽
Wow ❤️❤️❤️ God bless.
Guys, beautiful. What microphones were uses for this recording?
Thanks Dimitrij. We both used Buddha System Pickups through fishman preamps on our instruments and that signal was used at 90% for the audio mix. There is tiny amount of signal from an X/Y stereo-pair in the mix as well but that is nearly neglecteable.
@@MatyasWolter Thanks for detailed answer :). We enjoy listening to this recording big time. Greetings from Vilnius (Lithuania) raga community!
Masala !....💜
🙏🏼💐🌹🌷🌺👌👌👌
