Is this the best driving road in Britain?

If there's one thing a #caterham loves, it's wiggly roads. Could this wonderful stretch of road be the most enjoyable in Britain?
Were you taught this simple driving skill?

Over 25 years ago, when I was learning to ride motorbikes, the fantastic instructor taught us this technique for NEVER misjudging a bend. Using this simple technique you will always enter a bend at the correct speed, maintain the correct speed, and be able to modify your speed if the bend changes. What’s more, it works in a #car on a #bike and even on a #cycle 0:00 Introduction 01:54 Demo 1 02:...

    Great driving and footage. I’m a regular there but depending on the TDO, it can get a little oversubscribed. I’ve done 4 this year with Javelin and the amount of incidents and red flags is quite concerning. I’m back in August but with a different TDO who limit the amount of entries, so fingers crossed I get more track time and less idiots.

      You’ll be fine at most circuits if it’s a standard R400. Mine is tuned, which makes it a bit louder. The only time I’ve had an issue was on a low noise day at Brands, and even then a baffle device stuck in the end of the exhaust sorted it 👍

      @WhiteRoseDrives 5 місяців тому

      @user-sk2pq2uq7t You’ll be absolutely fine then, yes! I never had any noise issues before my tune. It’s a Premier Power 225 upgrade - but they don’t exist any more, sadly. You could do much the same with ITBs and a map anyway. If I’m candid, I wouldn’t bother. The R400 is nippy enough. The one (well two) upgrades I would do though is the ultra lightweight flywheel (even lighter than the lightened flywheel it already has) and competition clutch. The ULWF makes the engine spin up and down so fast it’s incredible! Heel n toe downshifts are a delight 😍 and the comp clutch is like an on/off switch 😂 High speed gear changes are almost like a DCT. Incredible.

    The distance from the vanishing point to the driver does not change based on the speed the driver is travelling at. So, the technique cannot tell you how fast to take a bend. It just tells you to slow down as you approach it and speed up as you leave it.

    • @WhiteRoseDrives
      @WhiteRoseDrives 3 місяці тому

      Yes, precisely. If you continue to monitor the vanishing point throughout a bend though, it can tell you if a bend tightens up (for your current speed). Hence, never misjudging a bend again.

    • @WhiteRoseDrives

      It’s not “better” to do that, it’s something you should do in tandem! Completely with you there that so many people don’t seem to know what road markings mean. Long lines with short breaks versus short lines with long breaks, for instance.

Whereas I would train them to check the lines, and signs and road conditions? Ie…wet,ice,snow or tractor leaving mud or debris, pedestrians and animals vehicles broken down also diesel spills and UFO’s? You never know what’s waiting round the corner…..SLOW DOWN for the bend doing a full 360 check then when safe and no obstruction in the bend then you can accelerate safely. Being a motorcyclist and car driver, I'm keen to learn, even after 30 years plus of driving. Does the vanishing point technique also include the 2 second rule techniques? First I freaked out because he was driving on the “wrong” side of the road. Second the method is very nicely explained, but my question is why? The turn of the road is in front of you so there are no options to do anything else. It is no secret. But I am only a causal driver, driving to slow probably, so I don’t see the magic. Sorry.

    @randallmacdonald4851 11 місяців тому

    I am a retired precision driver and am a bit dismayed at using just your technique. You cannot judge a curve's safe encountering speed just by seeing how far away it is. What about good traction vs poor traction? What about that barely perceptible dip in the road just as you enter the curve? I caught a tow truck driver (here in Canada) dripping dish soap in the curve near my home. You know what he was waiting for. When I am driving, I have to know where my car's wheels' traction threshold is in my current driving conditions. That changes as it begins to rain. Driving in snow, it changes suddenly when the highway lane is clear but there is a small pile of slush between one lane and the next. The physics will shock you when your tires encounter that small pile of slush. How fast can you change your vector as you drive? How hard can you take a turn? How hard can you brake from x mph to y mph? When braking hard, what does it feel like when the brakes begin to fade due to heat? And what can you do about it should you fall into that mistake? Then, there are thousands of other things you need to take into consideration when traveling faster than you can walk. Traffic to your right? Left? Do you think someone will soon be trying to pass? Is oncoming traffic limiting your fudge factor in the turn? All these are some of the reasons that AI will never be able to out "drive" a seasoned professional. We know too much compared to the AI just looking at things as simplistically as you have just demonstrated.

    Great for finding max safe speed to negotiate a bend but if you cant see around bend you must be able to stop within the distance you see to be clear. So you max speed will be governed by this and may well be much slower than just using limit point.

    Unfortunately, in urban highway driving, 'vanishing point' techniques is often useless, as the blind turns and lack of shoulders, elevation changes and overpasses, make it almost impossible to plan on what's going to happen ahead. The best we can do, is watch traffic several vehicles ahead, and judge what to do by what's happening to them. Motorcycles, always assume that you are invisible, and that if a vehicle near you MIGHT turn into you, that they will. So you will always be out of the way if they do, indeed, turn into where you might be. Another, was to avoid driving in the rain whenever possible, especially driving in the rain AT NIGHT. Because if you go down on the freeway at night, you'd better be up and running 65mph in the right direction or you're going to get run over. Last for bikers, never ride the center of the lane, or in designated truck/bus lanes, because even dripping diesel fuel will make your lane slippery. so much more, but that's enough for here.
