Alpaca Shearing Technique: First Person View Shearing An Alpaca
Ever wondered what it's like to shear an alpaca? Are you wanting to learn how to shear an alpaca? In this video I show a first person view of how I shear an alpaca, while narrating the steps along the way. If you have any questions please ask away in the comment section!
The general framework of alpaca shearing is working gently and effeciently to remove all the fiber, and to divide it up by quality. The blanket, or "firsts" come off first and are removed from the shearing area before continuing. Next, the back legs and the tail are sheared, and collected as thirds. The neck is collected as seconds, and is sheared before the face, head, and front legs. A quick nail trim is done while the animal is on the mat and then the animal is all set for the summer heat!
00:00 Laying the alpaca on the mat and restraining
00:10 Blowing dust and debris out of the animal's fiber
00:20 Shearing the blanket
01:30 Shearing the back legs and tail
02:13 Shearing the neck, face, and head
02:56 Shearing the front legs

Wow such a 😍 beauty
So beautiful!
You're awesome. How do you stay so calm while they're bucking like that?
Thank you! I’d definitely say experience, I’ve shorn thousands of animals and picked up lots of tricks along the way. They’re very in tune with people’s energy, so I always describe it as “calm confidence”. If they’re scared and skittish, they’ll keep trying things until something gets you to stop. So the key is to not stop! Also, the closer you are to them, the less that they can hurt you. If you’re right up on them when they jump or kick, it hurts less than if you’re a foot away from them when they jump or kick.
I always bet on the shearer.
That’s a good bet 💪
That's my last name...SHEARER 'S ALL THE WAY!!!!!😅
Woop woop!
You cheated! You used your thumbs to put that halter on🤣
Yeah the thumbs really helped out here 😂
Shearer! Will always win!
The shearer doesn’t give up!
❤🎉😢 it's all falling off into the dirt and straw! Don't they want to save it? As a spinner, I'd want that to fall onto a clean surface and I'd collect it quickly and into a bag.
This particular farm did not want to save the fiber. While it’s hard for me to see the fiber lost, I don’t have the logistical ability to save it at every farm. This farm had the animals as breeding stock, and it was a hot day - the priority was to get the animals cooled off as soon as possible.
@@appalachianshearing sigh! Ok. Thank you.
what that thing hes hangin from?
It’s a back support system called the back ez that makes it easier to shear for longer!
@@appalachianshearing you could hv totally said you welded it and I would of probably believed yuh lol..... Well that's even cooler cuz I could so see incorporating it for other trivial tasks that normally kill the feet.....thx!
Здравствуйте какую надо использовать машинку для стрижки малооборотистую?и сколько зубов в ножах 9или 13?
These are the Heiniger Xtra, and I use 13 tooth combs!
My grandpa had a blanket from camels wool it was very itchy but it was the warmest blanket i have ever used 😊
That’s so cool! It’s incredibly warm
Way to go abu!
He did so well! Finally found time to throw together a video
Comme Elle est belle 😊
❤ THIS IS PROFESSIONAL ❤
Beautiful hair
So beautiful!
في حضارة بابل القديمه كان يوم جز الصوف عند البابلين القدماء يعتبر عيدا ويحتفلون به قبل خمسة آلاف سنه.
Wow. He is beautiful.
Evil. Animal abuser.
why was this so satisfying?
Have you ever left one with a poodle look?
I’ve done it all! Dinosaur, mullet, Mohawk, poodle. It’s fun but then I typically clean it up shortly after
How much of USD costed the client for all this fur ?
Fiber worth. You also charge for shear ?@@appalachianshearing
@@SheldonT. I charge $35-$45 per animal depending on the number of animals, and the fleece once spun into yarn can be as much as $1200 per animal
Cool info, but honestly the subtitles add nothing useful...
have you ever heard of deaf people?
Thanks for the feedback! I put them on incase anyone is watching the video without sound.
@@thomaskiltie9587exactly!
surely you can't be serious.
@@appalachianshearing As someone who is deaf, the subtitles need to show complete sentences (not the words as they are spoken), otherwise you end up focusing entirely on the words and not the action onscreen. But thank you for considering those who like subtitles! It's better than nothing.
relaxing. nice job❤
Looks easy but it's not
Definitely takes some practice!
Heiniger Maschine..Weltführer
Very gentle ❤
Gentle shearing is the best shearing!
Its so light and wispy.
It was like shearing a cloud!
@@appalachianshearing I bet! It looks so soft.
@@claritey hoping to get a pair of socks from him next year!
beautiful
So beautiful! I was so excited when I first saw him at the farm. Beautiful young llama!
I need that for crocheting!!!!
The mill said it was almost impossible to turn it into roving because of the 10-12 inch staple length! Have you crocheted with llama/alpaca fiber before???
Вот уж поистине, ЗОЛОТОЕ РУНО!😊
Музыкальное сопровождение - русская цыганочка. Отлично!
He is gorgeous 😍
He is so gorgeous! I was so excited when I arrived to this farm and saw him in the catch pen.
What a great looking Llama boy! We have an Appy Alpaca with this same color pattern, and he's almost as big as a Llama. Thanks for posting!!
That’s so fun! I’ve only seen a handful of appy alpacas that are this defined, but every time I see spots when I arrive to a farm I get excited! Thanks for your comment!
어머나 무늬가 하트 무늬야
Yeah it does look like a heart!
Looks like his mother had so many babies she wrote on their skin their initials. 😂
That’s so sweet!
Oh that looks so satisfying - everybody's dream job.
It’s so satisfying! Never gets old watching it roll off.
awww...cutie❤
Beautiful
It’s an absolutely beautiful animal! It was such a pleasure to shear.
Ya i'll take a coat with the matchin hat
What a good well behaved baby. So pretty too! 🥰
Thats unique, really. 😊
Beautiful ❤
Beautiful ❤️
Vergiated yarn. Lol
Exactly!
MA SA ALLAH
Awww... is all of that blanket going in the garbage? 😢
Unfortunately yes, this job was an emergency call for some overgrown and very overheated llamas in 105 degree heat. The goal was to get the animals sheared quickly and safely. They had multiple years of growth on them so the fiber was matter and too long to be processed by commercial equipment anyway.
Jerk - if you'd stop scaring them to death it would be easier for you to shear them. I hope you use more gentleness ensuring them than you do trying to catch them. Please look at right choice sharing - she has the right idea
Need more than one person whenever possible I think… stress for both…
Ideally, yes. To be honest, this was a rescue call in Georgia at the beginning of the season and none of the owners (or my new assistant) felt comfortable getting up close and personal with a wild Guanaco.
@@appalachianshearing I’d think a wid guanaco would potentially eat you🤣❣️Thanks for the reply! Sending love, peace, HEALTH, and tons of respect♥️🙋♀️☮️🕉️🥰
That hot lesbian shear master is burning your clutch in taking wool off.😅
Lol
Nicely done
Thank you! Cheers!
What a beautiful spotted blanket!
It never gets old unwrapping the appaloosas :)
