I think "Ponyo" was the first Studio Ghibli movie that I watched, as well as the first one I saw in theaters. Somehow, not only did Palpatine survive, but this movie made it to one of the small-town theaters near me in its theater run in the US. My first reaction to it was mixed. On the good side, I noticed the crayon or color pencil art work for some of the backgrounds, and thought that was cool. On the bad side, I didn't like the story, and especially didn't like the ending. There are reasons parents don't let small children decide who they want to live with; because small children are ignorant. Small children don't understand that when they visit other people and are treated special, that they are being treated like guests of that family, not like that family's own children. What's going to happen over even just the next week in this movie's world? What will happen when Ponyo's new parents have to treat her like they treat their own son? When they have to insist that she behave herself, that she do this and not do that? Will Ponyo throw more hissy fits and demand that she wants to return to the ocean? I haven't seen all of Ghibli's movies, maybe a little more than half, but of the ones I've seen, Ponyo is last on the list. It does have some charms, but the laxity and even stupidity of the adults is very off-putting.

Loved to hear your take on the show. Overall I thought the show was meh. I know you've had palate cleansers after bad movie month but there's this cgi Kaiju based on a comic animated superhero movie you guys could collaborate on. It was based on an image comic that got a cartoon network movie oddly enough. His comic taking place in the same universe or adjacent to Invincible/ Spawn. And they were In a short lived teen titans ripoff/ inspired team together. Firebreather. It's something I reacquainted myself with. It's 65 minutes and stands up. It gets to the point. There is technically a Kenny, in the movie. In name only not actually annoying little kid. (The protagonist I'd say is a mix between Hiccup and Miles Morales.) The main character has a loooong name. And the best fire breath I've ever seen animated or done in anything. I wish the comic had gotten finished or that he reappears in Invincible.) And Jacob if you want to see Batwoman done right watch Batman Bad Blood. (I'm sorry but I keep going back to your batwoman comment from forever ago.... They did Luke Fox badly in that show and that's all I'll say for now. Animated stuff is where DC shined and where Marvel dropped off until what if.. In recent news Marvel has casted for Spider-Man freshman year! Already theorizing about that already! I love the kingdom hearts moments or connections you try to find anywhere. Only played Kh3 and trying to get the light novel's and Manga to read through. Keep doing what your doing especially sharing about your faith, the kindness you've witnessed experience and perform. Hey I've been listening to the celcast for a while. Episodes mainly on my favorite animated movies.or ones that hold a good place in my heart. Or ones you guys have covered that sound so bad I have to listen other people react to it. You'd make a great riff track. Your kind and amazing men and Podcasters. I learned of you guys from Nate but I love your coverage of animated shows especially the x-men bits at the end of certain ones. I grew up watched recycled old animated superhero shows mixed in with the recent. Your likes and dislikes are always honest or humorous. You wince at the box office when it's terrible for actually good movies. I've heard you guys reference RWBY and I'm wondering your gonna cover the rwby / justice league movies. I know there's been mention of Isekai Fatigue....and honestly it's kind of the genre I'm addicted to at this point. Also I've seen the bad reboot reboot sequel season that's a power rangers rip off and I'm not impressed like you guys are. I can't wait for you guys to cover the Next Avengers heroes of tomorrow. For some actually good Ultron and consequences for Avengers that feels real. With a bit of good and bad parenting. I can't spell deedla/deedra for the life of me but I like that buzzing sound. I'm a lower decks and abbrhams verse trekkie fan only but your c9verage of lower decks has been awesome. Seriously. Thank you for everything you've done.

I saw this movie a few years ago, and listening to your thoughts on it helped me come up with a good way to explain it: "It's like Studio Ghibli and Monty Python somehow had a baby."

If I may, I have a couple of anime movie recommendations for you. One is "A Silent Voice". It's up there among my all-time favorite movies. Maybe I should warn that it deals with some pretty heavy themes, and some of the content may be triggering for some people. The other is a more recent movie, "Josee, the Tiger, and the Fish". There are some similarities to A Silent Voice, but it's not as heavy. It's more light-hearted and fun, but it has its thoughtful moments, too. I irregularly keep up with ya'll, downloading episodes from time to time. I do want to catch the episode for Howl's, that's a fun movie I like a lot.

Throughout this stream, all I heard is you guys talk about different universes. You talked about James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plan for DC, you talked about a concern involving the world of D&D, then Francisco brought up this thing about a witch hunt. For me, hearing you talk made me think of the word, universe. On Earth, we the people recognize that God is the Master of this Universe, this universe He created. A universe we are blessed to be a part of. In it, we get to be a part of a story. We get to tell everyone about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We all have our origin stories, our testimonies. Stories that we each can tell of how we came to know Him. And, how we now get to out and spread that Good News for all to hear. Obviously, not everyone wants to hear that bit of news. They really don’t want to hear any of it. But, we won’t let the devil have the satisfaction. We will fight by going out and winning people for Him. People of His Church, of His Kingdom shall go out from their various temples and go out into the universe and face the night to help lead others face the Light.

I would rank this movie as my favorite Ghibli movie, though the competition is strong, so I'm happy that it's getting some attention, even if your opinions as not as high as mine is. I draw a difference between "romance stories" and "stories with romance in them", and I'd probably put this movie in the second category. The romance is there and it's important, but there's much more going on then just getting the two fated character to be together at the end. The "coming of age" category mentioned early in the podcast may be more accurate. The scene I think I like most is when Shizuku brings her writing to the old man. He reads it, and he tells her two things: you've done something special, and it still needs a lot of work. At least from my own observations, a lot of what passes for "encouragement" stops at the "You've done something special" or even "you're special" level, and then many people don't like to hear that they still need to more to make it better, whatever "it" might be. I also didn't mind the parents so much. With both parents having jobs and the mother even studying to I think get a better job, it made sense that they needed to rely on the girls to do things, chores if you would, to help the home run better. And I even liked that they didn't get over-dramatic about Shizuku's actions. To offer a contrast, I could think about modern parents who want to push their kids into all kinds of activities, or want to see future great artists or athletes in a child's current interest in such things. Anyway, thanks for the review, and I'm glad ya'll liked it.

Concerning the trivia question: Muto is also a major character in both movies, though he is very different in The Cat Returns than he was in Whisper of the Heart. Edit: Listening further, yes, you do mention that later on.

shrek's themes parody and relationships is its strong points....the shrek donkey bond is so iconic..shrek and fiona are cute soulmates...ogres have layers.....donkey finds a friend and is the first person not to think of shrek as just an ogre the moment he met him

by taking shots and making fun of disney's tendency to turn their art into franchises be it sequels merch or shows, ironically shrek became like the biggest single animated usa property at one point in time a decade after the first film came out with a net worth of 3.8 billion dollars ...thats kinda funny...

shrek is more layered then 90% of disney characters...its pretty upsurd how they exposed disney by making a donkey and ogre better heroes then most disney heroes at the time

john lithgow is from monty python boys...

shrek 1 made that much money when tickets were much cheaper pre 3-d and inflation is not included of salaries so if you inflate the numbers shrek was a massive success at the time
