A Vintage Journey - Cairns to Cape York in vintage cars ABC Weekend Magazine (1979)
Uploading for historical and archival purposes.
An episode of the ABC television show 'Weekend Magazine' about the Gladstone Vintage and Classic Carriage Club's journey from Cairns to Cape York in 1979. The 12 drivers took their vintage cars, all built between 1920 - 30, in a bid to show that their cars may be old, but they could still withstand unsealed, rugged roads. Digitised from a VHS tape recording.

Unlocking the Past
Переглядів 1412 роки тому
A short film I created for Uni that explores the passing of time and the connection between the past and the present. It features two historic photos from my family’s collection. The first photo was taken at Fairy Bower in 1902 and the second photo taken outside a house where my Great Great Grandparents lived in North Sydney in 1915.
Peugeot 504 Australia

Some 1970s and 1980s super 8 film footage from my family's home videos. The Peugeot 504 was quite popular in the Australian market because of their toughness and reliability. In Australia it was first released in 1969 and was assembled by Peugeot's rival Renault, and sold through Renault Australia's dealer network. My grandfather owned numerous Peugeot 504s and a 505 and drove a 504 in the 1979...

Another Kodak Moment. How's your Hills Hoist or your Victa Lawn Mower? Has the Body Corporate settled with the Developer yet or have you left out of pocket. Europe's great but they're not as advanced as we are, eh? Mate.

One thing I think helps these videos is when you cut to the contemporary photo, remain black and white. It avoids the stigma of the ‘olden days’ being in black and white and helps the viewer more objectively compare the two eras.

On the finish podium, George Shephard said the drivers thought they could bring the cars home 1-2-3. His reply was "you do that and I'll drop me daks on the podium." Well they did and so did he. On the Podium, he whipped a pair of shorts from his waistband and dropped them on the floor!

Well, I guess we lowered the average cost. All preparation and all running costs for our Civic #117, was about $8,000. 2 man crew and zero service crew, Just us and whatever we carried. We were aiming simply to make it back to Melbourne and that is what we did. The bonus was we didn't come last! We were the smallest capacity car to finish, 1235cc, and came 87th of 92 finishers. The down side was we hardly remember any of it. We were simply exhausted for about 13 of the 14 days. Must have been young and crazy. 4 flat tyres, a broken speedo cable and a blocked fuel filter were our ONLY mechanical issues.

The toughest rally I have ever seen, and I have attended many of the world rally championship rallies in the 70s as part of a film crew. I hate to think how much the factory teams must have spent on recceing and all the other costs associated with the event - but I admire the privateers most.

Great stuff ! gold. I had a VB and VC Comm both were 202 engines. They were both the same color as this car and had driving lights just like this car lol. and you could take them almost anywhere unlike todays modern cars with their big rims and low ground clearance. I cant u/stand why they chose a 4 cyl for this trip but it did the job well by looks of it.
