Growing an English Walnut tree from seed
#tree #walnut #Cumbria
Growing walnut trees from seed is easy. Just collect some walnuts from under a tree in October (for England), moisten and then pop in the fridge for a few months and you will have germinating seeds, Most seeds are dormant but a few will start to germinate of their own accord if you do not keep the seeds cool.
This if for Juglans regia (English walnut)
Walnuts were collected in Cumbria, northern England in October 2023

Growing Scot's pine derived from green cones found after a storm
Переглядів 13 тис.2 роки тому
#Scotspine #trees I found some green cones around a fallen Scot's Pine and decided to see if they would give me viable seeds that I could grow saplings from. I am a tree nnovice so tried a few different methods. It is pretty easy to grow them, just do not start too early in the year and stratify the seeds for best results.
It is a Mast Year but are those beech seeds you have collected viable?
Переглядів 2,7 тис.2 роки тому
#Beech #Seed #Viability This yearr (2022) is a mast year (year of high fruit/seed production) for many deciduous trees, not least the beech, in England. However, the appearance of vast quantities of fruit of the trees may be deceptive as the nuts inside may not be viable. The very hot and dry August we have had around the UK has probably caused problems for big users of water, such as beech, an...

    Noble effort, I am interested to find out how many survived. We planted 3 Scots Pine trees in our yard in 1989. We lost one but the other 2 seem quite fine. There have been some pretty rough times over the years with them. Too little moisture, too much wind, strong North winds and -30 C temps. But in the last few summers with decent precipitation they have packed on some bulk. Hopefully they'll be kept by new owners when that day comes. They should live for 100's of years.

    • @howardbell281
      @howardbell281 10 місяців тому

      Hi. The saplings are vulnerable in their first year. Some will damp off early on due to fungal infection. I find that after the first year more than 90% of my potted-up pines survive (better than most other trees I grow). Diseases, of which there are many, can be a problem - needles go brown and drop off with some trees recovering, some dying. Weather is, as you say, an issue - miserable wet and warm winters are probably not the best for them (like here in northern England); same holds true for the extended dry spells we seem to get now in the UK in Spring and summer. All in all, though, they are pretty tough and after three years they are ready to find a permanent home and their main enemy then is disease and wind-throw.

    • @howardbell281
      @howardbell281 10 місяців тому

      I am not sure how long they will stay viable. It is generally thought best to germinate not long after harvesting. It might be worth giving it a go with a few, soaked for at least a day then kept in the fridge - mine are beginning to germinate now. The ash on my family farm are all dying and I am growing lots of beech and hornbeam to replace them - both easy to grow,

      thats a great legacy and will be a rewarding achievement no doubt. keep planting on! by the way im sure you are aware but didnt see it mentioned in the video that some of what is in that dark water after you soak the nuts is actually a toxin to other plants. so dont reuse that water elsewhere in the garden or on indoor plants as walnut fruit leech toxins into the soil which give them a competitive advantage by preventing other plants from growing near them. @@howardbell281

    tyvk 4 this video; Last year was the first time that I ever tried beech nuts. Really loved them. This year I gathered a bunch of them, and when I tried to sample them, it was just Fibre in my mouth. Just husks. And I tested several of them and got the same result. I really wanted to know why, and now I know. Fibre itself isn’t actually wonderful to taste, so I think I’ll float them like you did to find out what actually has food in them, and toss the rest of the compost bin. And I think I would like to try to grow a few beech trees myself. Thank you so much! :-)
