Reckless government spending and lack of investment is the problems taxation is only feeding the welfare state tax relief for people earning less than £35k for be considered, on top of that cut the deadwood within government departments that already have huge amounts of money given to them, Healthcare and MOD are big money spenders and both of them don't really on the numbers, MOD alone was supposed to have a 3 tiered approach under Cameron, to purchase high end and off the shelf items and invest in future projects the first 2 haven't been done that's why there is a lack of kit in the MOD healthcare alone has too much deadwood, with half of the workforce just being lazy and passing the buck I know this because my gf works in the NHS as a consultant and she tells me day in day out how people don't do things right or just lazy and do not help, nowi don't know if this is due to low morale or just compliancy at the top but government could better spend money on making the people more productive, help them to be productive , pay better salaries and have in place a better salary scheme then based on inflation because that's just a con to them the NHS is the fourth largest employer in the world so the numbers of people isn't the problem its the way the culture is in the NHS that is cost us so much and its just a waste, on the other hand people need to grip with there health and YOLO approach is another reason the NHS is the way it is people do not care for there now health.

Very good advice, but I have a few things to mention from my own experience: reliability, availability and cost of spare parts, public transport, family and business. Reliability is a big factor IMO, which is why I'm generally only interested in Subaru, and then Toyota as a consolation prize. Subaru are the best automobile in the world, the only downside is you will have some extra fuel costs as they're all-wheel-drive. Toyota do have some rust issues, but overall they're also good, a little cheaper on fuel. Forget anything European, they're all junk and expensive to fix and service. On my journey through life, I grew up in an area with no or very poor public transport. Thus, cars kept me poor, but I still needed to get around. Then, I married and started a business. Two things kicked in, I was going to have children AND needed to make an impact in the market as a successful young man (people don't want to deal with guys who drive old things). I did actually start the business while owning a 1967 S-type Jaguar (3.8 manual), it had a towbar and came in handy. I once heard a bloke talking about me, and to answer the question what's Horlor like, he answered; oh he's all right, bit of a yuppy, drives Jag. I knew then I needed a better car, so I went to see the local Toyota dealer and got an operating lease on a Toyota SUV with all the bells and whistles. This came with all servicing and a complete change of tyres when needed. This gave me instant recognition as a young chap coming up in the world, and I had a new car which wouldn't break down (and if it did, Toyota fixed it), and my family would now be safe as well. Following that, I went through a series of Toyotas until I paid cash for a Subaru new, and that was 19 years ago. This car is so reliable that if it could talk, and you asked it to find a workshop it wouldn't be able to show you as it doesn't know what that is. There is something to be said for regular oil changes, especially in those early years. Any piece of equipment that is an orphan and unloved child in its early years always ends up causing trouble (just my 2 cents..ahem). Anyway, I am now considering a Suzuki Jimny as my retirement car. This jeep is rugged, simple, reliable and it will likely be new so it can take me to my grave. If not, I'll consider a second hand Subaru, better non-turbo, anything with turbo in its name is to be avoided as well.

One area of Tax that most commentators seemed to have missed that Labour have said in the past they will abolish is Marriage Tax Allowance. Currently as a married man I can, with my wife's consent transfer up 10% of her unused personel allowance. This can increase your tax allowance by £1,250 per year or reduce your tax bill by £250 per year. This change will affect a lot people like myself who are pensioners.

As a self employed tiny business owner now struggling seeing cheap African, Indian and Pakistani imported labour (to cut costs, to boost companies profits), my work as a qualified, time served telecom/datacom engineer I have seen my income fall by 90% since October last year. I’m soon to be struggling financially as the little savings I’ve paid myself since the end of 2021 and tail end of covid (that decimated my savings & bill/cost of living increases) will see my small one man band business go under in the next few months. I’ll vote reform as labour nor tories have a clue of how it is too struggle. I’ll fold and sign on, claim as many benefits I’m entitled to as our govts seem all to happy to look after immigrants before their own and I can see there being social unrest within two years of the loony left in power and the create yet another mess like war monger blair, who created the slide to where we are now. A country dying on its knees.

"A rise in cap gains, might see a flight of wealth from the the UK...". Might...I'll tell you what happens if we change nothing, we will not be able to pay for even our current level of public services such that they are, nor our pensions going forwards. We all have to wake up and smell the coffee. We are in crisis and we need a solution. If not a fairer tax system for the poorest in society, then what?

  • @ianphilip1610

So on the one hand, the "hard-working families" that currently send their kids to private schools can't possibly afford to pay tax on top, on the other hand, some private schools are allowing them to pay multiple years in advance so as to "avoid" the tax. That's a broken narrative right there. Look, the vast majority of people who send their kids to private school can afford to pay tax on top. They might not like it, but in all likelihood, they can afford it. We face a social funding crisis. It's not right that the very poorest in society pay a disproportionate amount of tax. That needs fixing.

No one under 125k y paying more than 45% tax. She did not say it, but it seemed that she wanted people to assume that, and judging by the comments of several people, they do believe that.
