I agree I take every opportunity to see Nicole Beharie. I fell in love with her and her yellow dress in My Last Day Without You . Yes and I also loved Diarra from Detroit. Oh my God were twinssssss
Hi, I have no idea how TV works. Nice work!
💖💖💖
Thanks, this makes more sense, some fan groups has a lot of drama to individual writers which I didn't understand because tv and movies are not generally my media
I think I follow the writer/director more in movies than tv (love anything Edgar Wright, Joe Wright, Wes Anderson, and Jordan Peele) but I do it a little with the Doctor Who writers, Shonda Rimes and Michael Shur.
I personally feel that Britta's entire arc can be explained if you view her as Autistic coded. She is a classic example of how Autism can look in women, and that is apparent from Abed's description of her to Jeff in episode 1. If you go back and view her arc as someone who went from high-masking to low-masking, she makes a lot of real world sense over the course of the show.
The movies I’ve watched these past few years, I feel they fail to convey “ show don’t tell”. I kept blaming failed writing, and I feel that your video confirms that. The fact that writers were not getting paid for going on set or just getting paid so low, makes sense that writing quality has gone so low.
i will say that film writing & production functions in a notably different way from TV. films aren't written in rooms or by more than one person/writing team at a time*. it's also not common for screenwriters to be part of the production unless they hold another role (see: Writer/Directors) -- i'd have to double check but i don't think screenwriters have ever been paid to be on set the same way TV writers have. that's not to say there haven't been changes within the film industry that have resulted in less favorable impacts! just that said changes aren't 100% the same. *there are always exceptions but often when you see a film with more than one writer/team credited, it's because of rewrites (ie. a writer is hired to take another pass of a completed script and makes a significant enough amount of changes to receive a credit - even if that version doesn't end up the final produced script).
I appreciate this breakdown! Are you trying to go into TV writing?
i am! all this yapping is from a place of love and aspiration
Why I don't watch TV....cuz it's all fucking stupid.
yeah
Really really awesome video made so easy to understand and can I just say that is a GORGEOUS vector illustration oh my lord I was captivated thoroughly looking at it the whole time. subscribing!!! I really like your style of covering and breaking down a topic that’s interesting and familiar to you!!

@fairylesbyaintdve6536 yes! you can find her on instagram as @studiojafe -- she's in the midst of renovating the page but that's where her work will be once she's posting agian
one of my old online friends was a writer on Psych and Burn Notice. I didn't really watch them much but I read her yaoi novels (yes really) and they were always really sharp and fun. so I have no doubt a lot of the good one-liners in those shows are hers
wow thats so cool, can you share some titles?
This makes so much sense. I never considered how much can change with writers shifting!
The first two seasons of Search Party were some of the most fun and interesting TV that I watched those years they dropped. I'm still reeling from that hard left they took for season three! I was so mad and confused 😂
This reminds me of one of my hobbies: plotting imdb ratings against individual writers for the episodes. From this, I'm pretty sure I figured out one of the reasons the Umbrella Academy fell off
I've been following writers from Buffy/Angel (not Joss these days, but there were MANY OTHERS that I do still follow). Jane Espenson, Ben Edlund, Stephen S DeKnight, Doug Fury, alllllll great writers to come from that room
this is really interesting! definitely makes me want to try to pay more attention to this stuff going forward
with shawn and gus in the thumbnail, I couldnt not click😅
Im glad, you made this video about writing, when Disney is seemingly trying to blame "diversity" for the failures of some of its shows, instead of the unsteady/unequal writing.
And it’s frustrating because people criticize but also say they will watch another season or movie. And Disney ignores it and cancels anyway.
whew now THAT is a whole separate 20+ minute train of thought on it's own.
@@voicememosforthevoid If you film it, I'll 100% watch it bec. I just watched JustWrite's videos about Game of Thrones' clones (Game of Clones) and it confirmed my suspicions. 😤
Disney is trying to blame diversity??? Seriously??? I can’t believe I’m just learning this…
I would really love to hear more of a deep dive from you on writer voice in the bear, too! I agree s3 was rough to get through, but there are some real gems of episodes like “napkins” and comparing my experience to the writer credits is interesting…
i clicked on this video by chance but i do not regret a single thing. i had a general idea of how it worked (as sort of a 'in a different life, this would have been my ideal job' fantasy), but nowhere near to this extent. the idea of looking out for patterns (and breaking of them) to identify writers whose style i enjoy is genius, and i will definitely be doing it from now on.
Part 2 Electric boogaloo made me chuckle. Thank you for that😂😂
very interesting 🫶🏽🫶🏽
Stephanie Robinson becoming an exec producer on wwdits made me so happy because she was one of my favorite writers on wwdits and i do feel like when she left the show the black characters were respected less and there just generally was less black characters. But that might just be coincidence. If i like a show enough usually there's a tumblr user or several who discuss writers and thats what clues me in too.
“Fischer Price” feminism ironically fits what I think of the Barbie movie really well. Specifically the climax where the message of feminism magically frees women from the spell of the patriarchy. But I don’t feel like typing out all my feelings about that particular mess right now.
The Buffy The Vampire Slayer writers room was like the standard for writers voice. I could tell the scribe for five of the writers usually befor the end of the first Act.
Thank you so much for the deep dive into TV writing
I’ve been curious about this for a while after watching people do retrospectives on shows and fully taking the lead writer in the credits as complete gospel and fully blaming/crediting the one person for the content of an entire episode. I thought to myself, “I’ve seen 30 Rock, I’ve seen the Dick Van Dyke show, I’ve seen.. other shows about TV writers,” lol, is that how TV even works??? And you fully answered my question. I’m definitely someone who appreciated the total breakdown. Maybe I’ll be able to try this out and have some fun!
This is very interesting, I didn't know much about how writer's room works and most of the time don't think about the differences between writers in tv shows. It's definitely something I'll keep in mind from now one. But you mentioned novels and it made me also think about how weird it is that we forget there's editors too when it comes to making a book, not just the writers. Anyway, all that to say, good video!
This is interesting perspective to hear as someone coming from the Doctor Who fandom. In my experience DW fans are more aware individual episode writers than other fandoms I've been in. But they do still fall into the all-powerful auteur showrunner discourse you describe here. One thing that's fascinating is that in fandom spaces the various quirks of showrunners become super aggrandize and mythologized to the point of deeply skewed views of the show as a whole.
so funny you mention this. Doctor Who got brought up in patreon comments as well but in questioning the UK model vs the US model. i haven't dug too deep but it looks like the UK television writing model didn't use rooms in the same collaborative way US rooms did until like the 2000s. not necessarily an auteur structure but more like feature writing - where you're alone for the process and get notes on full drafts. it makes sense then for fans to be very aware of writer voice if episodes were more so crafted independently by each writer -- though i can't speak to how that impacts fandom space. Dr. Who is not my ministry.
This is so true! Someone on the first 6 or so seasons is criminal minds, hated women- straight incel- as well as hating homeless people.
Oooof that makes me look back on those early seasons with a different lens, but you’re 100% not wrong
This gave me so much ick I stopped watching this show altogether
Really? I found the later seasons to be much worse in that aspect. Several early episodes made sure to humanize sex workers and the homeless- Legacy and the two-parter "To Hell..."/"...And Back" spend a lot of time in the POV of the sex worker victims in order to get the audience to feel the horror of what they're being put through (as much or more than time we spend with the killers of the episode in each case) Those episodes plus ones like The Last Word all specifically comment on how the killers only got as far as they did because no one cared about "those kinds" of victims, as a condemnation of that kind of social neglect of the most vulnerable members of society. Granted, it was starting to slip by Season 6- "Middle Man" was the first episode that I consciously felt like the (exotic dancer) victims were being dehumanized in a way that was new to the show. The writers have been able to stay in the POV of the killers before while still allowing the audience to sympathize with what the victims are going through, so I don't buy that it was just because the episode mostly stayed with the killers.
That’s just a murder poorn show
I’ve also listened to TV on DVD commentaries. So I focus on writers a lot too
I prefer longer seasons because they allow for character development and those countless episodes add richness, much like the broccoli in my TV dinner. When a season plays out like a long movie, it can feel rushed and exhausting, missing out on the quirky charm that makes a show memorable. So while I appreciate the efficiency of shorter seasons, I long for the days when I could watch 22 episodes and truly connect with my favorite characters without losing my mind, or them
Right sadly lots of seasons that are long or short is depend on the budget they are given from the studio/network, alongside the scheduling for the cast and crew and the limited amount of people in the writers room.
In reference to anime those "beach episodes" seem so pointless but it really breathes more life into the characters. I miss the 22 episode series. From buffy to gilmore girls, the episodes give the writers time for the charactes to evolve.
@@Kevin-rg3ycThat makes sense. I hope I don’t sound selfish
@@kblixt You don't. That guy was just trying to business-splain to you why the multi-billion dollar corporations that produce TV shows "can't afford" to pay for the workers that actually make the shows. "The budget that they are given" is not some immutable thing handed down from God; it is the (very well paid) job of some suit who doesn't give a toot about art or expression to assign the absolute bare minimum possible budget to every project, so as to maximise profit for the corporation. It's not at all selfish of you to want, ask for, or even demand better shows from extremely wealthy companies whose jobs literally are to produce shows people want to watch.
I love when a writer subverts my expectations for the better! And it's so true that writers can help you develop your own writing voice as well
Psych is one of my favorite shows!!! I re-watch it often
Me too! I've seen it around 5 times haha
They handled the core piece of Osha's fall well. I wish they had more time to explore the rest because a lot was left underdeveloped.
I've seen Young Soul Rebels recently and need to recommend it! Black protagonists, one straight one gay. The director is a black man, don't know about the writers. The movie made me teary-eyed at the end.
I had to listen to the intro three times to try and take everything in. I like both American Fiction and the American Society of Magical Negros, and recently found myself wondering why other black people do not feel the same way I do. I have not finished the video yet, and I aim to read through the essays cited in the introduction. Once I do I am going to come back to this because I already feel the gears starting to turn.
I loved The Acolyte. I wasn't planning on watching it cause of low imdb ratings. I watched it after watching your video and loved it. Thanks for the recommendation.
i think the age gap issues within the lgbtq+ are much more complicated tbh. A lot of people don't have their first queer experience until theyre in the 30s. or that used to be true, now adays kids are more able to embrace their identity especially in city centers. so often when you see someone in their early twenties dating someone in their 30s or 40s there's a good chance they're both in a similar place in their queer journey. this doesn't make it good or right of course. because of things like power dynamics and life experience, etc etc. but it comes from other systematic issues that serve homophobia. that said euphoria coulda been the same with college age character instead of 16 yr olds. call me by your name is trash.
It's not that I didnt like the show, it's that I didnt like the pacing of it. I was a huge fan of the cast and the themes explored. So, I was definitely rooting for the show to do well, so that it got a chance to improve and find its footing. It breaks my heart, that it got canceled so soon. Edit: and maybe, it's bec. I'm used to good kdramas (and I REALLY enjoyed Andor) but I dont think, it's invalid to expect tvshows to deliver a decent-to-excellent 1st season. Streaming or no, I shouldnt be falling asleep in front of my screen, even if the show decides to be more contemplative, than action-driven, it should still be entertaining.
Wasn't really working for me. Turning a classic story of good vs evil into shades of gray shows they misunderstood Star Wars, or at least the dark/light force and jedi. Acolyte was brimming with good ideas, just failed at execution over and over. Crazy how this show got a budget that was twice of what Obi Wan's budget was.
I’m really bummed this show got cancelled. Was really looking forward to seeing what happened between Vernestra and Qimir. I’m tired of Star Wars stories set between 22 - 0 BBY. Give us something new!!!!!
thanks for this video. it puts a lot of words into what ive been feeling and thinking by myself after finishing the season and looking at the discourse on twitter/youtube. it's really been disappointing to see the level of discourse just be, "my star wars i grew up watching is dead" instead of appreciating the new lore that has been produced like i just wanna collectively figure out what's next not critique boring white men that have to center themselves all the time. even one of my favorite lore channels just went off about how the show needed to be cancelled instead of idk... talking about the lore implications of the whole show. it's been made me wanna unsubscribe. :// anyways happy to subscribe to your channel and look forward to checking out your old videos and seeing what you post next!!
You put together the words I can't for this :) I enjoyed listening
Just wanted to add that the concept of force conception between wlw couples has existed in queer fandom since the prequels first introduced the possibility with Anakin. As a newly married lesbian getting ready to start her family, The Acolyte episode 2 had me sobbing on the couch in sheer joy 🩷 I never in my wildest dreams thought anyone would ever dare to make this canon, but here we are!
I actually liked this show. It did need to cook more which is why I wanted a second season, but I loved the story it was telling. And that's because of what you said at 9:53 about emotional detachment in the Jedi order. That whole part has always bugged me and to have an exploration of those ideas was exciting. I'm also not familiar with anything but the shows or movies (I'm a trek and Dr who person) so I was really enjoying the old republic time period. I hope there is another show that continues with this time period and these questions. I'm really upset with Disney for not giving this show a second season.
Being aggressive from the very beginning showcases a lack of interest in intellectual conversation about the show as a whole. And your lack of ability to defend your standpoint.
