TRANSLATION OF GERMAN PARTS: 1. 03.07 min Since I was 18 I played with the idea of entering a monastery, but I always threw the idea away, thinking it must be a product of some youthful naïve dream. So instead I studied and made a career for myself, but the thought of entering a monastery would not leave me. It frequently appeared during important times in my life. When I was 33 I thought: it’s now or never; If I don’t do it now, I’ll be too old. I got to know this monastery on a trip and I came to love it at first sight. I left my job, sold my apartment and my car. I gave away everything I owned and came here. 2. 14. 37 min: Back then it was normal that when a woman entered a female section of a monastery that the fortune she brought would go to the Monks’ Monastery where the men resided. The men then would make sure the women were protected. The men would also give them pastoral care. The problem for Hildegard to leave the Disibodenberg was that it would be a financial problem for the Monk’s Monastery. 3. 18.07 min: Hildegard did everything to prevent that Richardis would have to leave and be forced to transfer to the Bassum Monastery. She wrote several letters to people in power. She wrote the archbishops in Mainz, Bremen and Hartwig. She also wrote Richardis mother. She even sent a letter to the very pope himself, Eugenius and asked him to use all his might and power to prevent that Richardis would have to be transferred to another Monastery. 4. 19.13 min; We don’t know exactly what was behind the depth of her connection with Richardis. We have a very emotionally expressive letter Hildegard wrote after Richardis death. Richardis died short after her transfer. In the letters to Hildegard she seemed to have regret for having to leave and wanting to return to Rupertsberg, but because of health reasons she couldn’t, and she died shortly after. After that Hildegard wrote a letter to Richardis brother and stated that she had with “ her all too great love contributed to the tragedy”. 5. 21.47 min Opus Dei was in the early days of Monasteries not only perceived as a liturgical service, but was part of the entire monastic life. “ora et labora” pray and work. If one out of duty had to work when there was choir time, then simultaneously there would also be a prayer. When one works dutifully in the service of faith then one did prayer simultaneously. And that’s how Hildegard too understood it. 6. 24.48 min To be happy in relationships also means to be happy and joyful in the Monestary. Monastery life has nothing to do with being sullen…or what should I say….the negative, bitter and heavy has nothing to do with it. Because the problem lies within oneself, do you understand that? Hildegards life was overall filled with a lot of joy, which reminds me of a quote of hers: “ Dear humans, don’t forget to dance! Otherwise the angels in the sky won’t know what to do with you”. 7. 25.36 min Hildegard didn’t let the nuns wear the simple stereotypical nuns clothing, she allowed them to dress up. They wore colorful veils, they had a crown on their head , let their hair down, they also wore precious stones and jewlery with the cross symbols. At that time an upset Abbess asked Hildegard how on earth she could make sense of doing such a thing, and she referred to pauls instructions for what women could wear in the First Epistle to the Corinthians. Pauls instructions were that women should dress in a very simple way, not wear make up and that they were not allowed to dress up , have their hair down or make themselves look beautiful in any way. And Hildegard replies in an interesting manner; she makes a distinction between married women and virgins. And she says the nuns in her Monastery are virgins, and hence they have a special position. She said they are not submitted to and under the laws of any man, but only submitted directly to God, and hence they don’t need to follow any of Pauls directions. As the brides of God, and the brides of Christ they are obliged to dress up as brides and behave as brides. 8. 31. 19 min It was ofcourse the herbs that grew close to the monastery she studies. Studies shows that the flora close to the Nahe river was strongly represented in her works. The knowledge of the botanics of the area was of importance, but one could also find herbs that only could have entered the area via the trade roads . For each specific herb there is a very precise and well- reasoned explanation of why that plant worked the way it did.
