"Based on endless wordless stares" I'm sorry, and I respect that it's your opinion, but this is pure blindness to Kate Winslet's brilliant, quiet force in Ammonite. The movie itself wasn't made just to tell a love story, and this is why the perspective is excusively focused on Mary. Mary is the Ammonite that needs to be found. She is the treasure inside the fossil that Charlotte unlocks. The movie talks about loneliness, grief, and the importance of the human subject's singularity. It depicts raw human feelings and their detachment from any social terms that trap us into cages of supposed self-awareness, while the only thing that these social terms cause after all, is fear and limitless boundaries to our nature. It talks about the potentiality of a love that blooms in bleakness, and how devastating yet promising it can be. I understand that if you merely watched it for the lesbian plot, you might not have liked it - but this movie has a whole range of unique themes except for female affection, themes that surround all human beings. I apologise for this long comment but, Ammonite happens to be, in my opinion, the best movie of the kind that's been recently made and I'm so sad you didn't view it the same way. I also thought Kate and Saoirse's chemistry was amazing, but I guess that's up to anyone's different taste/way of seeing things. Nevertheless, I adore both Fiona and Emma and this was a great video. Brava!
