I can't think of anyone outside of Zappa who would articulate a vision for musical art in such a comprehensive and compelling way. And I think DEVO's presentation of its art and its confronting of the mainstream machine was even more subversive than Zappa's. Maybe an arbitrary connection but I'm really glad we got to experience and hear from both.

People thought Devo were crazy in the 70s and 80s when they predicted de-evolution. Just look around you, it actually happened. The world after 9/11 became a shitty devolved world

Wow. Great perspectives. Imagine brilliant extraterrestrials observing this world from afar. In the galactic picosecond of Devo’s rise and fall, the momentarility turn their attention to one of their pets humping a table leg. They then go back to viewing things happening that are more destructive and less creative. The next higher order of aliens observing them would appreciate the irony.

Diamond Dogs had a undercurrent of social and political messages. Bowie tried to get the rights to George Orwell’s 1984 to do a stage show musical. Big Brother was part of the project. I often think of Donald Trump with that song because he refers to “a glass asylum” and hints of fascism and blind leader worship. Since Devo was conceived as social and political commentary, this makes sense. “freedom from choice, is what you want” is the underlying message of Freedom of Choice.

These guys were totally on to something of substance. If you had half a head on your shoulders, you saw it coming, but they had the courage to truly explore the disturbing truth in a way that could possibly help us deal with it. Artificial Intelligence is going to force us all to reconsider what it means to be human. 57:30 Looking back will no longer be an option when machines can do it better than people can. Once we get over the shock of all this, considering Devo's message may help us move forward. (What's with the pretentious cigar?)

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving And revolving at 900 miles an hour. It's orbiting at 19 miles a second, so it's reckoned, The sun that is the source of all our power. Now the sun, and you and me, and all the stars that we can see, Are moving at a million miles a day, In the outer spiral arm, at 40, 000 miles an hour, Of a galaxy we call the Milky Way. Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars; It's a hundred thousand light-years side to side; It bulges in the middle sixteen thousand light-years thick, But out by us it's just three thousand light-years wide. We're thirty thousand light-years from Galactic Central Point, We go 'round every two hundred million years; And our galaxy itself is one of millions of billions In this amazing and expanding universe. Our universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding, In all of the directions it can whiz; As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know, Twelve million miles a minute and that's the fastest speed there is. So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure, How amazingly unlikely is your birth; And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere out in space, To remind us of it here on Earth!

I love that he repeatedly mentions David Bowie as an influence. In my opinion he couldn't have found a better mentor. Mr. Cassale is a very interesting man. I was the only one of my friends who bought Devo albums. All my friends were into AC/DC and Zep. I listened to it alone in my room. Couldnt get anyone into them at parties. I didn't care. I love Devo. It was perfect for my hs band kid sensibilities. It was just so different. The other band i was really into was the Tubes. Another band i couldnt get my friends to listen to. I love what he said about performing at CBGBs...he's so right about their performing at that punk club. It was just too intelectually and painterly different for the punk bands and the mass media to get.
