Lost at Sea in 1812
Amid the War of 1812, Charles Barnard and four companions were marooned in the Falkland Islands. Charles would be there for over 500 days, and it would be over four years until he returned home to New York. It is a tale of betrayal and survival. It is also the subject of Eric Jay Dolin's new book, Left for Dead. Eric joins me today to discuss Charles's ordeal and how he managed to survive.

A brilliantly eloquent explication of Quaker history and evolution. I am no expert and this interview is introductory for me as I’m researching an early to mid-nineteenth century individual who was smitten with Quakerism. Hamm provides a framework with which to tinker and build upon. If you are Quaker-curious and a neophyte like I am I strongly recommend giving this a listen. Thank you Dr. Hamm, great job Logan.

This is a most excellent delve into the real inner mechanisms of the Friend's faith. Thank you for this presentation. I had heard the term Quaker early in childhood. I knew it to mean extreme conservative Christianity. I'm 45 now. Almost all my family are deceased, including all 4 grandparents, mom and dad, and even my own son. 😢 I started researching my ancestry because I'm one of the last people left in my line to remember we existed. I almost instantly traced my maiden name, Edgerton (I've never been married,) back to Richard Edgerton a proprietor of Norwich, CT. But several family historians can't agree on his parentage because there is conjecture that we may be descended from English nobility. My early searches on Richard Edgerton kept spinning me in a circle around 3 particular men. Sir Thomas Egerton, 1st Viscount of Brackley, and MP. John Egerton 1st Earl of Bridgewater. And, Francis Egerton 3rd Duke of Bridgewater. I didn't think any of these to be my 10th great grandfather, as his name "should" be Richard based on the 10 most recent generations naming pattern, including my brothers. Here is the caveat. All other family historians refute that we come from nobility, I surmise, out of ignorance. We know for sure that Richard Edgerton, fought at Fort Mistick and at fort Saybrook. He was living in Saybrook when he married my 9th great grandma, Mary Sylvester, and had their first 3 kids. Then, they were one the first 35 families in Norwich. Richard served as Constable on at least one occasion. His name is on Founders Monument in Post and Gager cemetery. My 8th great grandfather Samuel married William Bradford's granddaughter, Alice Ripley (daughter of Major Joshua Ripley and Dr. Hannah Bradford.) Samuel and Alice would become two of the first Quakers in Connecticut. They are listed in numerous Quaker church records in New London county in Connecticut. Thomas Egerton 1st Viscount of Brackley, was one of the proprietor merchants, and members of Parlaiment who helped fund the purchase of the Saybrook Colony. His mother's name was Alice Sparke, and he was the proven illegitimate son of Sir RICHARD EGERTON of Ridley, Cheshire, England. My research tells me that Sir Richard Egerton is also the illegitimate father of my 9th great grandfather, Richard Edgerton, and his mother was Ellen Strood, of Brook, Ashford, Kent, England There is a legend that our progenitor "may have taken with a Quaker Miss and fell ot from family favour. " I had previously dismissed this quote for the last two years of my research until your comment at 21:35. If my 10th great grandfather was Sir Richard Egerton, and my 9th great grandfather dropped the title Sir, I'm starting to see how that might get him ousted from the family. I can't belive I still have an hour to go!🥰

Interesting details about Poe's life. My own independent research subject, whose life I have delved into in equal depth, was an obscure 19th-century author named Mathew Franklin Whittier. After over a decade of research, I'm convinced that MFW was the author of "The Raven," "Annabel Lee," and "Some Words with a Mummy." I'm convinced he privately shared these with Poe in early 1842; and that when he published "The Raven" in the February edition of "American Review" under the pseudonym, "---- Quarles," Poe scooped it by three days in the NY "Evening Mirror," replacing MFW's pseudonym with his own name. Which is to say, Poe's claim to this poem was a brazen public scam. His subsequent essay, "The Philosophy of Composition," in which he explained how he wrote "The Raven," was also a scam (not a "hoax," as some scholars have suggested).

Interestingly, it was actually the fifth French and Indian War; there were at least four other conflicts prior to the really large-scale one that preceded the Revolution. The nastiest one was undoubtedly King Philip’s War in New England, although that probably doesn’t count, considering it did not technically involve the French using the Algonquian river bands as proxies. Sadly, it is difficult to find good documentaries on that war, as the few that exist are so grossly politicised and rife with political correctness. The best books that I would recommend to any serious amateur historian about that conflict are Eric B. Schulz’s book and “Flintlock and Tomahawk” by Douglas Edward Leach. Do yourselves a favour and stay away from Atun-Shei’s “documentary”. Unless you like propagandised “history” where the narrative is “wypipo = evil”.

You know what I also find fascinating about the Sultana: in addition to its loss being the deadliest maritime disaster in U.S. history, the wreck of the Sultana is actually not in the Mississippi River anymore. The river changed course numerous times since the disaster, and when an archaeological expedition in 1982 uncovered the remains of the Sultana (which consisted of blackened wooden deck planks and timbers), they found them 32 feet underneath a soybean field in Arkansas, roughly two miles away from the Mississippi River's present-day route.

    • @northerncaptain855

There is a niche market for licensed by the state of Maine nuisance animal trappers, You won’t get rich but it might help a dedicated trapper as land owners will occasionally pay to have beaver removed. I recently spoke to fur processing company and was informed beaver pelts have about doubled in price due to the market for Western Cowboy Hats. The beaver hair is processed into felt and used by hat makers. Apparently the demand is a result of the popular Yellowstone Series however, I doubt if anyone can make a living today trapping.

The various indigenous groups (Canada entitles as "First Nation and Americans wrongly call "Native Americans") new themselves at "the people". The "people" had no distinctions/titles for the Europeans, Asians, and Africans that arrived in the 15th century and later to North America; suggesting their centuries/generations long unpreparedness for invasion, adaptation, and/or diversification.
