Thank you to NorCal Crew, MAC Rowing, and SDRC Jrs for coming out to Newport Harbor for some morning racing on November 19, 2023. Typically, Fall races are called "head" races and follow a time-trial (single file) format throughout 2-3 miles. Our race course runs from the west end of Lido Island, south to the main turning basin in Newport Harbor, then turns left (to port) toward the PCH Bridge ...

    Very helpful information. I'm trying my best to convince my body not to lean so much to the left side but is difficult, I think is a fear of flipping. I can feel my left leg become "sleepy" (I don't know a better description in english haha) while I'm paddling, which is basically the result on sitting heavy to my left side. Gotta keep training and loose the stress!

    Worst result will be dropped for each racer (to help if you want to chose to skip a race and still compete in the whole series, etc.). In the case of a points tie, the times are totaled and winner is fastest time.

    Hi Dave, this is one of the best training videos I have found, thanks for sharing! I got in a debate with a team member here (Pale Kai, Avila Beach) about the top hand, you extend the wrist, then move it through to flexion as you paddle, others keep the wrist level, no movement. What are the benefits to the wrist movement you demonstrate?

    Egads... I had mentally deduced the exact OPPOSITE rudder results. I though that hard-right rudder would force the ama down. (I was imagining more of a centrifugal force.) I've got to go play with the rudder and try to feel what the ama is doing. Thanks for the videos! (All the way from Dana Point.)

    I had someone STOP on the finish line right in front of me, so I had to run over the buoy to avoid him at the last second. We're racing in and then he stops dead in front of me. There was only a small space from the dock to the buoy. Next time I'll be aware and not bother to be so close, but jeesh, you're racing, after all, and you don't think to hold off at the end.

  • @pcatful
    @pcatful Рік тому

    What about Johnny Puakea saying "use your weight" so pressing downward in the catch? And then some coaches would say the upper hand is just bracing the handle for the stroke back. And you mentions "very little postive paddle angle" --isn't there a desire to get the power "up front" and reaching forward, creating lift as well? I like your drills. Will have to learn them so I can try them next time out.

  • @pcatful
    @pcatful Рік тому

    Often the chiken wing is either taught or the direction to move your upper arm higher is given in drills, and the control of chicken wing is not taught. ------ Bending the upper arm: I have seen videos ua-cam.com/video/jx4-K3VtzR8/v-deo.html saying some bend is needed as it should give you more power rather than a straight arm putting stress on the shoulder and poorer leverage. I tend to keep that arm more rigged but elbow bent some. Not sure if there should be more bending action in my upper arm but It feels good to me to keep it more or less in extension and project energy from my whole body.( Shoulder OK for now?)

    Hi Dave - do you address entry point of catch? I am a novice so many colleagues are über-emphasizing as far a reach as possible and exit at knee or mid thigh. A very forward emphasized stroke compared to the majority of instruction I am seeing on videos. Much mahalo!

    • @lalljp
      @lalljp Рік тому

      I SUP and a lot of the time in choppy water and wind I kneel and shorten my adjustable paddle and use OC techniques. I believe people underestimate the propulsion you get far back in the stroke. You aren't really moving front to back, for much of the stroke the blade acts as a propeller blade. When the blade is behind you, the angle of the blade pushes water back as you lift it, which provides thrust. But on the other hand, my adjustable SUP paddle goes a lot deeper than the OC paddle so maybe that doesn't apply

    This idea is also supported by you having a shorter overall length paddle than most tend to use. I've been messing with this idea since watching Kevin Jerusalemy compared to the other V1 paddlers. He always seems to be smoother and stays long in the water even though his paddle appears to be shorter. I believe he has just mastered maintaining the best angles, and keeps pressure on the blade with zero wasted motion. Shorter paddle equals hands closer together, less over-reaching, and more pressure through the hands from my experience. Less shoulder pain, staying powerful "inside the box", and faster recovery stroke a massive bonus.
