2022 Tohatsu Break-in
Переглядів 12 тис.2 роки тому
We go through the steps to break in a brand new 2022 Tohatsu Outboard motor.
As long as they use that ugly blue color I'll never consider it
I bought a 9.8 when I retired 3 years ago. I love that thing
I'm a happy customer, as well!
Ordered a pull start 20 hp due to it being 10lb lighter at 95 lb, otherwise id definitely would go with electric
It's a great motor. Enjoy!
Why not 20 hp? Its same weight?
Great question. Because I wanted to be able to troll at slower speeds. When I'm by myself, I do struggle to get on plane unless I set the trim very low. Then I have to carefully slow down or the wake washes over the transom.
Break in time is a waste of time! To keep it simple variable speed (2,10,30 minutes and 1-2 hours) except for full throttle for the first 10 hours. Change your oil and filter after the 10 hours and your good to go. If it breaks down that's what your warranty is for! Not complicated, but instructions are silly!
I'm not saying you are incorrect, but they put instructions in the manual. Thanks for your comment.
I don't work for Tohatsu but my educated guess ( as a mechanical engineer) is that the lawyers came up with this long and complex process in to have the option to deny warranty claims if run history in the computer doesn't show compliance. The process is cumbersome and near impossible to execute correctly. IMH, the importance lies in limiting and varying RPM's in the first couple of hours of running.
Can you imagine if we had to do this after driving a brand new car off the lot!?! Haha.
In how many days/weeks/months do I need to complete this break in period? I have a sailboat so I assume I will be using/needing the engine minimum unless I need to do this break in before I start using the boat in a few days. Thanks 🙏
There is no time frame. I would do it as soon as you can, though. Best of luck!
What a great information. I just got a 9.9 F.I. for our fishing boat and my son is so excited.
So awesome. This will be my 3rd season. I can't wait to take it out this year!! Enjoy!
Great video and brilliantly explained, im about to buy a tohatsu 15hp and was wondering what the running in process was. How do you find the outboard since running it in. Would love to see a review from you about it.
I love it and am thinking about trying the prop mentioned in another comment to reduce the vibration.
Yeah, right, logo...bad start...
Tell us more.
@@northwestlife_9 just look at video and i think, but it it a question of preparation on the subject..., it would be more efficient and pertinent by going straight to what oeople want to know. Not a ferling about logo which 99 percent don t give a s..t. i stop listening to this as nay be after 35 min you give an info like timing belt versus timing chain like suzuki...etc...something onmechanic, not a plastic logo.
@@salta5859 Fair enough. It was meant to be sarcastic and quick. No where near 35 minutes. But I appreciate your viewpoint. I agree to wanting videos to be short and to the point, not dragging on too much about nothing. To be honest, those 2009 youtube days are gone. Again, I do appreciate honest feedback.
@@northwestlife_9 🙂 thx for your positive answer. If world would be like that, it would a nice surfing wave. All the best to you
On mine, 90% of the vibration was the prop, I changed the prop and was immediately surprised how bad the original propeller was. I switched to a solas stainless and couldn’t be happier. It’s silent, way better grip on the water and substantially less vibration at all speeds.
Wow! This is gold! Thank you. I hope others see your comment.
Thank you for your comment. Please let me know what model of solas prop. you use for your outboard.
@@northwestlife_9 I appreciate that, thank you.
Great motor: One of the biggest Likes is that you can get a 20 hp in the same size and weight as the 9.9/15. I have two minor dislikes. 1) The shift lever could be located farther forward as in the mercury version. 2) Not a fan of the blue color. Thy started offering some models in white but the selection is very limited.
Great comment! Thanks for your input.
The way I read it for my 6hp at least, was 20 hours for oil change. 10 hours is just when you can start using full throttle any time.
Yes, the first 10 hours is the break in period. Your procedures may be different for the 6hp, though.
I remember when these first came around, didn’t really know much about them and kinda wrote them off as just more cheap import junk. Fast forward these yrs later and not only are they still around, they’ve developed a pretty impressive following and seem to be innovating and improving with the times. Nice to see quality and affordability together.
I agree 100%. I'm hoping my grandkids will be taking their kids fishing with it someday. Thank you for commenting.
I have the 20 hp tohatsu my concern is red bulb.lights up when hitting high revs....any help.
I found this: Your Tohatsu 4-stroke outboard is equipped with an Engine Oil Warning Lamp (except for 2hp, 2.5hp & 3.5hp). When the warning lamp is off, it indicates that sufficient oil pressure is present. If the warning lamp is on (red light is on) or blinking on/off, immediately shut down your outboard and check the oil level.
You are likely hitting the rev limiter. Throttle back a bit when lightly loaded, or try a coarser pitch prop. The owner's manual has more details.
That’s Awesome! Cheers!🥂❤️✨
Much appreciated. Thank you.
Am outaborad motor repair I need job i
Good evening
Tohatsu been around longer the Tesla, is Tesla copying Tohatsu logo?🧐
Hence the tongue and cheek rhetorical question. I should have made it more clear. I'm surprised Tohatsu didn't claim a trademark infringement.
@@northwestlife_9 Maybe the will make the 1st Tesla e-outboard for them.
Can you do video on installing battery for the electric start ? What battery type and how to hook it up . Is battery a starter battery or combination Start/ deep cycle . Thanks
Great question! I bought a marine deep cycle 12v with 750 MCA. I believe you only need about 350 MCA to start the motor but it's the same EverStart Walmart sells for less than $100 I use in my 20 ft open bow, so I have a backup, if needed. In fact, I used it to start my F150 this winter when its one year old Costco battery died for good. I plan to hook up a small 55 lbs thrust trolling motor this spring. I'll use the Tohatsu to charge it up. The battery has dual posts. The hookup is VERY easy. The motor cable comes with long cables with eyelets. I hope that helps. www.walmart.com/ip/EverStart-Lead-Acid-Marine-RV-Deep-Cycle-Battery-Group-Size-27DC-12-Volt-750-MCA/164242687
What a boring process! About to buy an MFS 20E but 10 hours is effectively a whole weekends boating for me. I guess main thing is fluids change at 10 hours
It doesn't necessarily have to be boring. I wanted to create the video, so that was our priority and watching wildlife was amazing. Anyway, do what you like, but not following procedures could void the warranty or possibly shorten the life of the motor. I'm not wealthy, so I am doing my best to follow the manual. Good luck. I really appreciate your comment and valid perspective. Much of the 2nd day was boring for me. :-)
@@northwestlife_9 Thanks for you reply and please do not think that I was suggesting video is boring - I completely get the notion of taking time to enjoy be afloat. My point was the prescribed running-in (that's UK term for break in btw) process seems laborious and protracted. It's the same for Suzuki 4S outboards. What I can't understand with modern 4S outboards, is this complicated and extended running in period. For example maorityof modern 4S car engines do not have this - since manufacturing tolerances and metallurgy and oil lube technology is much advanced from 1970s, they are effectively bedded-in by design. Of course they still advise to warm/cool and not use either extended full throttle and revs nor labor the unit for say 1000 miles, otherwise you just get on and drive it. I just wonder why is the marine outboard industry different ? Give us Oldies something to do? 😀 Anyway enjoy your boating and you engine. Keep us updated how it is going. Thank you from the UK
@@gaycha6589 No worries. I knew exactly what you meant. Many wonder if engines really need to be broken in. You're not alone. 😀
@@gaycha6589 I think its because car engines run at varying speeds and loads for the most part, whereas an outboard is often run wide open for hours. My big question is why does the break in procedure differ between the small Mercs and Tohatsus when Tohatsu makes them both? 😕
My 2018 automobile 'required' a break in, in terms of running the engine at higher speeds in order to best 'seat' the pistons. Agree for an outboard the variable RPMs probably helps to 'optimize wear', so as to not prematurely wear the cylinders. I am not an outboard mechanic, just my general understanding of the matter. Interesting that Merc and Tohatsu have different break-in periods.
Tohatsu have had that logo for a lot longer than Tesla
EXACTLY!! Haha.
I have a 9.8 on a sailboat at a dock. It it ridiculously difficult to flush this engine. I am using a barrel with Salt Away every several uses. I dont know why they make this so hard. There should be a convenient hose hook up high and reachable. I am otherwise very impressed with it.
Thank you for the comment. Yours doesn't have the hose flush port? Mine does.
I`m looking forward to buy tohatsu 30hp but don`t know to take with power trim or not because that`s almost 1k more In My country. Now I`m using old yamaha 30DEO but fuel consumption is a nightmare :D
With my boat I have to change the trim depending on if I have others with me or not, so I would like to have the power trim. But if the trim stayed in one position mostly, it wouldn't matter too much.
I had a 2009 30 with power tilt and trim. The power trim is well worth it in my opinion. It saves on your back when trying to lean over the transom too lift the (heavy) engine into shallow water drive. it also allows you to fine tune trim ( speed and efficiency) performance with ANY amount of weight in the boat.
youtube recommended cool environment
Considering buying this motor.
If my budget wasn't tight last year, I would have added the auto-trim. Good luck!!
Mine clatters a bit at idle but other than that it’s great.
Interesting. I wonder why. How does it do between idle and full throttle? That's when mine vibrates the most. Thanks for the comment.
@@northwestlife_9 it only does it at idle. Runs smooth and quite above that. Hopefully it’s supposed to haha
Great video, thanks. I just ordered the 2023 20hp. It should arrive right before the hurricane coming this week, so it may take a little more time to break in. 😀
Congratulations! Let us know how it goes? Which options did you choose?
Haha I just got my wahoo skiff repowered with a 60hp Tohatsu and I want to break it in so bad but this hurricane keeping me inside!🤣
@@kennyhollidayjr5206 OH man! So sorry. Stay safe.
I have a 20 Hp version on a 12.5' inflatable dinghy. It runs well & is very fuel efficient. To minimize weight I chose the pull-start model. It never starts on the 1st pull, but will almost always start on the 2nd pull. I lock the steering tensioner lever when pulling the starter to keep it steady. I like having the steering tensioner, but wish it was a little longer so it would be easier to reach. If I were shopping again I'd choose whichever brand was priced best and met my needs. All of the major brands are very well made, from what I can tell. Tohatsu is as good as any from what I can tell.
Great insight. I agree about the tensioner being longer would be nice. I'm surprised yours doesn't start on the first pull when it's warm. Even my 1980 15hp Evinrude started on the first pull once warmed up and that was just a few years ago. Thank you for your comment.
I read somewhere that the engine self charges the electronic fuel injection on first pull, which is why is always starts on second pull - if that makes sense?
You can say about the logo what you want, but Tohatsu uses it at least since the beginning of the 80's. So who is copying who in that case 😉 Great engines though, I own a tohatsu built 15hp mercury from 2011, and it has been 100% problem free up to now
Haha. I have to wonder how Tesla got away with their logo. Thank you for the comment. I sure love my little outboard.
I just love tohatsu. Never had a single problem with my 6hp and 30hp . Fire up in seconds. Runs smooth. Cheep to run. Was happy to run in over 30 hours to get it perfect maby a bit overboard but they run perfectly 👌
That's fantastic! Thank you.
So their reliability is the same as their Japanese counterparts such as Yamaha and Suzuki?
Would you recommend a 30 over a 25? I have a 1652 Jon boat
How many miles can you go with a full tank? How big is the gas tank?
The motor included a 3 gallon tank. The fuel usage varies depending on the RPMs, the type of boat, the weight, weather, etc. With fuel injection, it's not good to run out of fuel, so I never ran the tank much below 1 gallon. It runs for a several hours with my setup. I carry an extra 5 gallon fuel container as a backup.
Thanks so much for putting this together and sharing it. I am about to go through the break-in period with a 20hp Tohatsu, and this video is especially helpful!
That's great to know. I wasn't sure how helpful it would be. Glad it helps. Enjoy your new motor.
I've got the carbureted 20 & 3.5hp models. The steering friction adjustment is a game changer. Fuel economy and engine noise are also positives in my book. The 20 does shake more than I'd like at certain rpms.
I think others will find your comment valuable. Thank you!
Hi, I’m not sure whether to buy a 30hp Yamaha or 30 hp Tohatsu, is there any difference between the brands, what would you advise? It’s for recreational use at sea.
The reason I bought this one was due to availability. And I have a dealer/service 30 minutes away. I ordered a 2021. By the time it arrived it was the 2022 for the same price. Anyway, all that to say from what I can tell online folks like Tohatsu, Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, and Mercury. Try to find reviews that compare the two without bias. But, I think it will be tough to find current, 2022, motor comparisons due to the low availability of the units.
I'd go with tohatsu 30hp. I have one and never had a problem with it. I used to have a 75hp 2 stroke that I got rid of to get a tohatsu 4 stroke . Both my boats have tohatsu efi outboards and I won't change also spares are easy to come by as tohatsu make outboards for most companies. Ie Mercury are just rebranded tohatsu outboards and many more companies too.
Tohatsu just launched the MFS 30D actually. With 58 kg the lightest in it's class and actually only 4kg heavier than my 2011 15hp. But 150cc, 1 cilinder and 15hp extra. I want one now as well 😂
Yamaha and it's not even close
I have no the 9,8 on a 10 ft Pioner, like it and use little gas.
That's great! What's your average top speed and what is the slowest speed on your boat?
@@northwestlife_9 If go on full with 2 persons i think ab 16 knots and 18 to maybe 20 alone.I live with a lake and must go through shallow water before out in the fjord and open sea, so this one is good and the boat is only for 8 hp but take a light version 9,8 wich is the same engine but a bit mooore top effect:
@@kaavest that's great! thank you. others with a similar boat will find that to be useful.
@@northwestlife_9 These engines are eternal machines and i got the 25 in 11 years before moved in to the lake and a smaller boat, hundreds of hours no problem even 1000 if change oil each 80 hours.
Good to see the safety clipped to you i heard a story about a guy who had the safety around his wrist and he had an incident to where it slipped over his wrist and he was in the water watching his boat drive away.
Wow. Scary. I've killed the engine a few times because I forgot about it being still clipped on, so I know it works well. I've caught myself forgetting to put it back on, too. But I have 35 hours on the motor now so minding the lanyard is more natural. Thank you for your comment.
I have the 20hp, I like the fuel economy and throttle response with the fuel injection
Great comment. I do, too. I was concerned about using the 3 gallon tank. I am carrying an additional 4 gallon can as a reserve, but I've used it as a convenience, not a necessity. Thank you for the additional observation.
