Nice work. My two cents. Instead of stringers it would have been less labor intensive to build several long rectangular boxes of the different riser heights and securing them together. Good point about being able to reuse old screws of torx head type. Forget about Phillips screws, they cost less but strip out more often.

Solid!! Nice work! I've seen plenty of times where stairs (or single steps) were an after thought, thrown together with scraps, odds and ends, etc. They are a high traffic, high impact areas and need to be as beefy as possible.

Why the wasted deck boards under the stairs , and no railing post on the stairs ? Did u pull permits and inspections?

where i am those miters would blow apart with expansion and contraction .reginal thing i guess

I use biscuit jointer with pvc biscuits and polyurethane exterior glue to keep miters together FOREVA

i hear you on the screws having easily salvaged 100 or so 2 inch Torx screws from a thoroughly rotten deck, i will re use them in the new timbers....

Should use ground contact treated for the framing. Regular treated isn’t rated for that. I think 4x6 is the smallest ground treated lumber you can find standard, without special ordering.

I agree 100% about ground contact of siding. Have not seen anything about 8 inches below the bottom of the siding. On a slab construction home you would have a moat around the house if you dig 8 inches down.

nice video, ive been trying to find out if these panels have any shrinkage? Ive beenn told EPS panels will shrink and cause gaps between the panels over time. Can you provide any details? Thanks

Hard to see on the video but the cracks in the white seem to follow the plywood joint. We always put down ditra over the plywood in that case, so many variables can cause that, a while ago there was lot of problems with some 12x24 s from box stores, they had a release agent left on them from the factory, so nothing would stick unless you washed backs first and back buttered . The setting not sticking like that to the floor is either lot of dust left on the floor,not burning it in first before you trowel or…. My guess it’s unmodifed mortar .if it was hot and the tile guy let the setting skim over before he laid the tile it would look the same . 30 years in the trade and the amount of stuff we tear out is crazy over the last few years too many people who should never touch a trowel.

Any luck on ZIP R with tape or liquid flash in Vancouver yet?

This system is used in all US climate zones, including extreme cold in high elevations in Colorado as well as throughout the Pacific Northwest which is every bit as rainy as Vancouver. I saw a stack of this stuff at a Rona in Kelowna on special order for a client so it is starting to get some attention around BC. Having said that, despite all the money Huber has put into marketing the heck out of this stuff, it is still too early to know how long the tape system (negative lap) lasts as Zip has only been around 20 years or so. Canada (got to love em) is massively behind as a whole in building science. It’s a conservative building industry and if you want to be in the vanguard (more power to you!), you will be faced with officials that don’t understand it and won’t try to understand it. A generation from now, Huber Zip will be every bit as popular here in Canada as it is in the US currently. Just have to be patient as Huber does not spend the money to lobby for building innovation in Canada as it has in the US. The Canadian market is a small fraction of the US and we just don’t warrant the effort.

What do you think about those who are spraying closed cell foam on the block exterior as water proofing? And spraying it on top of fill for under slab insulation, radon and moister proofing?

Here in Dallas, a local company did a rain test on it at different PSI's and the system didn't do so well. The tape did not seem to truly cure into the sheathing and water came through the taped seems. It also came through all the nail holes (of course) and even in a spot where there was no penetration in the sheet because apparently the factory applied coating had a weak spot in it that allowed water to pass right thru. In my own opinion, the homeowner in this example is getting a really good system given that the builder is applying shingled paper on top for the water barrier and the zip boards here are R-3 with a polyiso backing creating a total thermal break. In Canada, you would still probably want to attach a vapor barrier inside and not look for this system to provide it. The Zip system window flashing stretch tape is excellent so in the end this homeowner will be very happy. HOWEVER if you decide to use this system, go with the liquid flashing they make for this system instead of the tape and plug all the holes and seems. You can also flash the windows with the liquid flashing.

Vancouver has the wrong climate for this product. In Canada, we never put the vapour barrier on the outside. They only use that stuff in warm climates like Texas and Mexico.

I've got the same problem with poorly made blocks. Home depot and nicolock, both very sloppy with tolerances. 1/4 inch in height variation on a 6 inch block or not level. Ridiculous. Quality is going down while the price goes up. Shame on them!

Great tips. I used the router with bit to line up the router jig in the existing groove before I screwed it down, works great to align it properly.
