Ball Bearing Indicator Repair ... and Why You Shouldn't Oil an Indicator
Details of how I fixed broken jewels in a nice Helios indicator by replacing them with ball bearings. Also, my rationale on why you should not oil an indicator. To some that might seem counter intuitive, but with a layer of watchmaking knowledge it makes sense; explanation herein :)

102 Schaublin Lathe checking taper mount spindle bearing installation
Переглядів 17314 годин тому
... or why I love the old quality machines! Here are the results of installing new roller bearings in a Schaublin 102 lathe. These are taper mount bearings, where fit is determined by how far up the shaft you drive the tapered inner race. They're expensive (SKF P4) and the fit is in micros so its challenging work. This video is to show the results - the process is detailed on my web site here w...
Making PTFE Teflon Model Engine Gaskets the Easy Way
Переглядів 228Рік тому
Making gaskets for model engines can be challenging, flimsy materials, lots of wholes etc. Here's a nifty way to make them using PTFE or teflon which can apparently handle the heat as well as being soft enough to form a good seal (on well machine parts). Being only .004" thick it does not appreciably change the dimensions of the finished assembly. I hope this was of some interest and thanks for...
Enlarging a table saw blade bore and showing the use a blake coaxial indicator
Переглядів 518Рік тому
I need to bore a 5/8 diameter table saw blade to fit a 20mm arbour on my Inca saw. Here's the process, and it also show a Blake Coaxial indicator - the fast and accurate way to centre on a bore or OD in the mill. Still some shaky camera work....but lots of progress towards brevity! Thanks for watching. metallum.shop
Making a crystal for a dial indicator
Переглядів 1,7 тис.2 роки тому
A how to video on making a new crystal for a dial indicator or watch. I usually just buy watchmakers crystals for a few dollars from ebay, but they are not available in sizes this large. I ended up making a rotating tail stock pressure plate that worked well, more effort than the indicator warranted but hopefully it sees additional use. This video should be 5 minutes but somehow I drone on for ...
Lathe Tailstock Quill Grinding Schaublin 70
Переглядів 7812 роки тому
Part of the ongoing quest to recondition a Schaublin 70 lathe, here are some clips of the tailstock quill work. The quill was ground down, the hard chrome plated to build up the OD. The bore of the casting was then carefully lapped and the quill ground to fit. This focus on the quill part of the process. Speaking of focus, clearly (or fuzzily) I need to concentrate more on camera focus. New res...
DIY Lost Wax Casting with a 3D Printed Object
Переглядів 1,9 тис.3 роки тому
note, there is no audio track, this is just a visual overview of the process. Eons ago I'd jumped on a great deal on a lost wax casting set up. Then it sat and sat, unused. I love the potential but just didn't get around to using it. More recently, 3D printing in wax at least cubed the potential. Essentially just print the pattern and cast! I'd like to eventually do this with resin printed part...

Fixing a Lufkin Dial Indicator
Переглядів 5673 роки тому
The video shows the results some repair work on a Lufkin back plunger dial indicator. To see the details of the repair, please see my web page. The fix involved replacing a cracked jewel with a ball bearing and replacing the hairspring (because of a clumsy move on my part). www.metallum.shop/2021/11/28/extensive-indicator-repair-lufkin-back-plunger/

Schaublin headstock in the horizontal plane

working on getting a headstock spindle axis parallel to the base. Yes, I know its a surface gauge not a height gauge....the challenge of speaking, doing and thinking
happy buy vise review
Переглядів 1,2 тис.3 роки тому
In the video I mention the two parallel surfaces had a variation of 2x the certificate, it was actual 3x. The challenge of thinking and talking while recording. The certificate is printed, not filled in suggesting its like many of these low cost off shore product certifications - a bit of marketing without much relationship to the tool.Quality vises are expensive, and I know the hobby machinist...

Turning a Schaublin 70 headstock bearing
Переглядів 1 тис.3 роки тому
A short video turning a new bearing in situ for a Schaublin 70 lathe. Considerable work was done before the video indicating everything in using a mandrel I ground held firmly in the outboard tailstock bearing. The video is a short clip of a big project - at some point I'll have it up on my web page Thanks for tuning in
Super interesting! Glad to see you are back! Do you think there is an engineering/production reason for the shallow dimple waffle pattern on the main plate vs cosmetic? What kind of photo & lighting gear do you use to take those nice, magnified shots?
Hi Peter, Thanks. Waffle pattern has something to do with the rolling/flattening of the plates, or so I've been told. Not sure how that works, something to do with localized work hardening? Just guessing. imo the biggest difference for shop photography is to use a camera and tripod. Then you don't care if smallest F stop and ISO needs a 15 sec exposure. I also use a macro lens for a lot of the shots so I can get up close. I sometime also try and use natural light - mornings are best near a window when the light is coming in sideways.
If I have a chance to buy a mastermatic watch cleaner, should I buy it. and what do you think I should pay for one?
HI John, I don't have much recent market context so not sure what they are trading at. Condition obviously is important, but also how many baskets come with it - they are hard to find and expensive. They also came with sit in top lids or screw top jars. The later are better to contain the smell and stop evaporation. I'm found some new screw on top jars that fit, which is what you see.
You're on a posting tear now that you have your channel back, you trying to become the next Joe Pi? ;) Seems simple enough we should be making our own
Thanks. Your backgeared headstock is different to mine.
