It’s sad because stories like this always get labeled as “the punishment isn’t that bad” until something detrimental happens to the kids and now it’s “oh we had no clue the kids were being abused”. CPS is notorious for letting kids fall through the cracks. Just because they don’t “take the kids” doesn’t mean harm isn’t being done. Making your kids sleep outside is cruel. Point blank period.

Sis, there is no LEGAL or MORAL justification under God or the US flag that one can think up that makes this situation neither neglect or abuse. Lets start with the fact that they are minors. Parents have a responsibility to provide the basic needs for their minor children (food, shelter, clothing, education) until they are adults OR ensure that those minor children are having basic needs met in another environment other than under their own care if circumstances warrant. I am not one of those who do not believe in reasonable corporal punishment. And I also have low tolerance for weak-willed, permissible parenting that allows children to grow up ill equipped for an adult life that gives consequences to bad behavior. But if a parent is unable to handle their own children using non-abusive/non-neglectful forms of discipline, then there are legal means of releasing them to the temporary or permanent custody of the state (or others) where they still get their basic needs met until adulthood. One cannot LEGALLY kick even an incorrigible minor out of a home. A parent must go the next step of finding alternate places to ensure needs are met. It is simply not safe to allow minor children to sleep on an open porch all night anywhere, much less in Detroit! And it is criminal neglect to refuse them domicile shelter in the freezing cold when it is available. They are still YOUR children and unable to meet those needs for themselves. There are programs for at risk youth, detention centers, residential care facilities, foster homes, wilderness camps, etc. Sometimes just moving them to different environments (away from bad influences) by placing them with relatives in more structured environments. As a Heavenly Father, God also chastises those He loves as His own children. But He will never use His rightful power and authority ABUSE or NEGLECT them to force repentance and obedience. A pastor should be an example of God's wisdom and grace, not a tyrant who dominates and abuses his own children to gain control. Sadly, many parents who are professing Christians come from a legalistic church background. They have not known God through the revelation of His grace in their own lives and thus see Him as a tyrant who forces obedience through fear rather inspires it through loving intervention and training. They are often neither led by the Holy Spirit nor a right understanding of Holy Scriptures in these matters, so simply taking the word of the parents that these boys are genuinely "out of control" rather then normal teens is also being presumptuous. Another reason I find this father being a pastor so problematic, is that God also instructs His people to obey civil law as long as it does not try to override His commandments. I know of no state where there is legal permission to stop caring for the basic needs of one's minor children simply because you can't get them to behave. Therefore, Detroit CPS and police department needs to be investigated and receive consequences for dereliction of duty. You asked why they didn't do anything? Not so complicated! They are both poorly staffed, overwhelmed public service entities with a longstanding documented record of not protecting or serving! That's another issue. My point is that there is simply no excuse of any representative made aware about this situation choosing to do nothing. If you can do nothing else, protect the children and elderly---our most vulnerable members of society---which is ALSO a biblical commandment! Sorry for the length, but it was vitally important for me to help you more clearly understand that this situation was abuse under any scenario! Parents cannot discipline ANY way they please, even when their children clearly are out of control as the child, won't listen or show respect, and need serious disciplinary consequences. That's when parents reach out for help. Again, I believe in strong discipline when it is required. But we also have to remember parents still have legal and moral obligations, and that children are not property but autonomous human beings with their own human rights and legal protections. There is nothing wrong with admitting something is beyond your scope to handle as a parent and seeking outside resources. In fact, that demonstrates the greatest amount of courage, loving sacrifice and wisdom. ❤

Since when did CPS have done their job? There’s so many cases of children in worse situations who don’t get removed. This isn’t a situation to play the black card. CPS is trash across the board. On top of that it’s been months. They not even going in to use the bathroom, shower, or eat. The kids are probably bad I don’t doubt that but this can only encourage them to do worse the make sure their basic needs are coved which is why there ramped violence in the first place. Yes the parents are humans. But this is pretty inhumane. It’s not about why they’re are out there, it’s about why they can’t or won’t go back in. Parents probably created a high stress environment for them.

I think you are comparing apples to oranges. Children need guidance, support and discipline, and the parents need to lead by example. The child in Walmart has not had appropriate parenting, probably since birth. The boy saying we good is probably because he doesn't want his business posted on social media,too late. What's not adding up is that some parents think parenting is easy, and as soon as something upsets them, they act insane. I am a retired social work professional of 30 years and I will tell you some agencies are so over whelmed with the responsibility of protecting children until they do nothing! These parents need to be careful because they are going to reap what they sow.

I can't imagine a scenario where this would be an appropriate punishment but they could at least get the kids some camping equipment. That child in Wal-Mart makes me want to bring back corporal punishment but I've noticed a lot of unhinged people raising unhinged children. The same parent that snaps at the cashier because the potato is not, in fact, on sale and curses out teachers will raise theses tantrum throwing fools.
