This movie isn't unwatchable or anything but it's both old and cheaply made. They basically got a half-assed studio and a bored uncaring writer to make it. The former tried, but it just looks bland and the latter just didn't care. Overall, it's important as a historical movie and it can be enjoyed as an anime, but there's so many good anime there's no reason to think it could ever stand out. Even in the 1980's this is far from great and is just a "good enough" film through and through.
