Roger shows us that he's actually a fantastic ad man in this scene, not a rummy patrician. Remember, Roger discovered and hired Don in the first place, which was the most amazing managerial masterstroke of the entire show.
"I find it's best to smile and sit there like you've got no place to go" I think about this line every time I meet someone new or go out on a date, it really puts you at ease and you accept that this time is set aside for the two of you and nothing else
Even more important now in the age of cellphones. It's always a cool rage when someone looks down at their phone halfway through your sentence. It's harder than ever to build the foundation of mutual trust.
Absolutely superb acting from Slattery. He changes his whole "Roger" persona. His voice gets softer, his body language changes, he's not smug. He legitimately sells the audience that he's helping Lane. I'm impressed.
I still don't understand how Roger is soo attractive considering his age... He's actually the age of my grandpa... (I'm never attracted to old men, I'm confused to what's going on)
Being an account man is about 'letting things go so you can get what you want'. That's the business. Clients want you to be what they want when they want it. That's how you get accounts. It's sleazy stuff, but it is what it is.
Too bad Lane ignores all of this advice and never for a moment remembers the most important piece - sit back and look like you haven't anything more important to do. His insecurities could not be held back
Clips like this. continue to show why this show...was one of THEE best ever written. the dialogue is superb, and the actors...well...sell you, that it's all real. Perfectly cast actors. Top shelf....
Flattery i suppose.
Masterclass by Roger Sterling!
In my opinion, this was the best scene in the series.
Conspiracy the basis of friendship. 😊 That is nice. 😊 So conspirators are friends. 😊 Ok, gotta take all friends group for the ride. 😊

Roger sterling is the best character in the show. He's a low down bastard but he knows what he is doing and how to get by. Fantastic show
Does anybody notice that when Roger says "have you ever been fired off an account" his accent is very british?
That "smile and sit there like you have no place to go" is so true.
... he says as he's sitting back like he has nowhere to go.
Roger stones tips on how to manipulate a client.
Its the last 3 things that really matter, get your answers, be nice to the waiter and don't let them near the check
That “let it show” lives in my head rent free
That is a very short, and accurate lesson in account management. Also in staff management. Empowerment and transition of control.
Layne hanging on every word.
"And whatever you do, Lane... Don't hang yourself in your office!!"
Roger. 🥰

The genius of the character of Roger Sterling
Vulnerability (amongst men) builds trust

This same advice also does apply to a date - believe it. Worked many times for me, including my wife :D
This scene is evquevelent to michael learnung how to shoot a louad gun
I don't know why everybody like Don, because Roger was 10 times cooler than Don and not a cowardly deserter in the face of the enemy or habitual liar
I still don't understand how Roger is soo attractive considering his age... He's actually the age of my grandpa... (I'm never attracted to old men, I'm confused to what's going on)
Maybe 😏 You're subconsciously Attracted to the qualities of your Gramps And you see them in Roger Which makes Roger Attractive to you
This scene is such genius.
Other than medical dramas, Madmen was unique in that its content was actually about the work its characters performed.
This scene seems to be about one man teaching the other to be a serial liar. That's not a value judgment, I'm just saying what it is.

I was a creative director at a large well known agency (Grey) and a lot of times Account Executives would come back stinking drunk from lunch!
4-yr degree in psychology in one 2 1/2 min clip
Watching it like this, with Roger's entrance and exit, it's such a beautiful scene. One man, to another, is teaching the art of putting on the charm.

"I once went on a five minute tear about how my mother loved my father more than me; and I can assure you that is impossible."
just a brilliant series!!
Google
You have to have the personality to pull it off. If you use the language without seeming genuine it comes off awkward as Lane learned
i'm glad this lecture was recorded. that was masterclass
Such a brilliant display of acting. Dialogue, the delivery, and tonality all on point.
A quote, “friendship”…..love that line.

This was the moment Dumbledore became Iron Man
Let it show
what is the context of this scene? who is he meeting at this dinner? a rep from jaguar?
yes but this was before a jag was actually a well built car
Sterling proves his value
Roger was my favorite character on that show.
"Yes, I have had chewing gum stuck in my pubis area as well .... how would you deal with that?"
There is more truth about being an account man in this scene... than any other aspect of the entire series... lol :)
