If everything is Nature, then Does Spinoza ever ask where this Nature comes from? Self-Caused? Can Matter be self-caused? Or Only a superstitious person would ask such a question?

Just finished listening to this guy’s book of anything you want in which he tells his story of accidentally building a company and grew it into a big one. Totally loved the book. He is a person full of joy. You can see that from his shining eyes. The moment I see him I feel happy 😂

As a private teacher and student of Spinoza’s Ethics, I understand that free will is an illusion and that the laws of necessity and self-preservation govern and direct all of existence. Also, intuition is required to understand his Ethics, reason alone will not help you. His philosophy is to be lived and understood; otherwise, it becomes abstract and only entertaining.

Sleeping is necessary, but so is being awake. What a paradox! Eating is essential, but so is not eating. Paradox!

There’s certainly a balance in focussing on a few writers versus many. I think a gym analogy works well here. There are different phases in a training program, firstly, starting with high volume, and then slowly reducing volume over months and increasing intensity. I think we can do the same thing with reading. Go through phases of reading many different writers, and then honing in on a few.

Good stuff. I love Emerson’s work. It’s deeply Stoic and offers a stepping stone between the ancients’ and our modern sense of Stoicism.

I like to think of the end of each day as the end of life. If it’s been a good, productive day, we welcome sleep. If not, we are restless.

“Please, don't worry so much. Because in the end, none of us have very long on this Earth. Life is fleeting." - Robin Williams. This always wakes me up from chilling out from overthinking the future, especially when worrying about particular things.

This is a pretty interesting discussion within its framing - but I wonder how much different it would have sounded - had it started with establishing an explicit appreciation of the answer to, who am "I" ? We are evolved biological creatures, made of Earth's processes. Our Evolutionary heritage had some opportune twists of fate, so that our evolving body/brain kept improving its ability to observe, along with developing a "Free Won't" (that is, being able to stop instinctive reflexes for a few beats, long enough to consider alternative actions and outcomes, and then to act accordingly.) act, process, remember, retrieve information until it became introspection. Now here we are. Our consciousness is the inside reflection of our body/brain communicating with itself (Dr. Mark Solms). Same as it is with all other creatures, each according to their body plan and life style. When one manages to come to terms with our physical biological reality, all sorts of 'flesh vs. spirit' conflicts and confusion gets clarified, and thereby become resolvable. Thing is, you need to do your own homework about evolution and why it matters to you and the body you travel through life with. Seek and yet shall receive.

I just stumbled across this conversation and find it refreshing for its pragmatic approach. Can I infer that Julian's approach to philosophy is similar to the Greek post-Socratics where their view was that an academic approach to philosophy was not actually practicing philosophy?

In academia I get the impression that the main reason people mention the name of whoever they're quoting is they don't want to give the impression that they came up with the idea, or more accurately, don't want to give the impression that they're trying to take credit for someone elses work.

Speaking as an artist, I think most of the tortured artists of the past created despite their suffering not because of it. We don't know what they might have accomplished if their personal struggles hadn't gotten in the way. He does a disservice to pronounce a very general interpretation of the experiences on a wide variety of individuals.

Excellent explanation! I've wrestled with the idea of hope before. I like this idea that it is a basic precursor to action, and the notion that not all hope is equal. I believe we are able to hope for success without producing fear of failure. Much like the Stoics use of preferred vs non-preferred, we can hope to achieve the preferred, but also be ready accept any outcome with tranquility.
