Hi Ricky, this is a great video and I hope the BBC gave you a bit of helpful exposure, I know I’ve commented in the Bob Mills video but this really showcases you doing an excellent job to do the best by people. When I saw Bob Mills there was connection with the boy in the documentary but this video blows all of that out and shows that you’re a decent, clever and dedicated bloke of your own right. I salute you 🫡

Hi Ricky and hoping you’re well. This was an amazing podcast and once I got started last night I couldn’t stop listening, it took me well into the early hours (a bit like tonight). There was so much which I can relate to with regard human behaviours and attitudes, yourself and Bob Mills summed it all up better than I ever could. I found myself engrossed because this podcast was so relatable. You’re a very clued up guy and can phrase things so well - the channel definitely deserves more subscribers and views. With the clip, indeed like many I became aware of it on IBWMD when I was a teenager but I didn’t know where it was from until a long time afterwards. Summer on the Estate is a horrific record, those flats really weren’t suitable for habitation and it’s telling that they’re not there anymore. I do get the impression that Ian was made of sturdy stuff as he doesn’t cower down to Tom and tells him that he doesn’t want to hit him despite taking abuse and punches, but I only know Ian from watching the documentary, so I don’t want to tread too far with that one as you’d know much more than me. Tom comes across as a monster, the way he treated your mother was disgusting. I’ve had lots of drink over the years and got into some right states, and acted like a right a#se. I’ve never managed to do anything like that though which demonstrates that he must have been a right work of art. Especially when he knew there was a camera crew on the ground. That’s not even the worst of it, treating your mother like that in front of her own mother and you - no mother and son should ever see that. I’m so glad I’ve seen your podcast and the boy in the video has grown into a clever, fair minded and balanced chap who is willing to to give the benefit of the doubt - as demonstrated by your contact with Bob Mills. I know Bob Mills talks about Paul Sykes and using this for entertainment, I really think he wanted to use Tom as the entertainment in the same vein, but the difference with the Paul Sykes videos was that no abuse towards others came from that so it’s different. At least though you both agree that apologising isn’t enough, it’s your actions now and how you carry yourself forward, using the past to make better decisions (which is why history is so important). I do know on the SOTE follow up Ian is interviewed again and mentions Tom no longer lives in the area, and he was a recipient of karma. I don’t know what happened there (and I’m not fishing) but I do recall a scene where Tom genuinely couldn’t remember how many kids he had because he was permanently pickled. Cheers Ricky and wishing you the best, Alex

Having spent 2 years working in a homeless hostel I agree with a few of the points you raise but disagree with a few as well. Support workers cannot force anyone to do anything. I lost count of how many housing appointments, drug treatment appointments, educational appointments, opportunities that I worked hard to find for service users who just didn't turn up for the support they were being offered. How do you move on somebody like that? I spent most of my time trying to help people who just did not want to be helped. If someone refuses to clean their room you might give them a behaviour warning but push comes to shove are you really going to make that person homeless if they continue to refuse? What you're bang on about is the 'charities' that run these places, charging so much money for such substandard accommodation that people wouldn't believe it without seeing it for themselves. I was repeatedly asked to book people into rooms with no heating, with broken windows, with blood spatters on the walls from people injecting in there. No bedding. No cutlery. Management driving around in 90k cars and just didn't care, they would just say 'fill the voids, fill the voids!'. So you're right about that, but a bit naive if you think giving an entrenched homeless, mentally ill drug addict 'a bit of practical advice' is going to even touch the sides in terms of solving their problems, you know? Overall though, just found the channel and really enjoying the content so far, thought provoking stuff 👍

Hi there. I looked for Ian and eventually found his niece. From the information I found on him, he was arrested for marrying an African woman in order to get her a visa and in the court report it said he was a crack cocaine addict which I can very much picture. I debated looking for him to see if it was possible to make contact with him but his niece messaged me to say they'd been informed he'd passed away. This was a few years ago. He was a curious case really. Very very intelligent man in a lot of aspects. University educated and a very talented artist and musician but a lazy alcoholic who seemed to decide to slum it. I wrestle with how I feel about him to be honest. There was a part of me that hoped he'd turned out okay but there's also a part of me that resents how poor of a father figure he was. It's almost like he chose that kind of lifestyle isn't it?

The story of the sun and the wind. I think its an Aesops fable. The sun and the wind argue and bet who can make the man remove his coat. The wind goes in full forse, puffing and blowing, darkening and making it cold. The man, buttons up his coat, puts his hat and hood on tight and leans into the storm. Next is the suns turn, he beams a huge smile down onto the man, already exhausted. As the sun shines, and heats the mans bones, the man takes his hood down, unbuttons his coat, slows down and takes in the breeze. The sun won because gentle persuasion, full of joy and love does better than forceful anger and selfish gain. ❤
