The Truth About Why Smart Teens Disengage From School (with Jenny Anderson and Rebecca Winthrop)
Is your "good student" secretly struggling? Discover the hidden signs of student disengagement and learn how to help your teen thrive in school and beyond.
In this eye-opening conversation, Margaret Ables talks with award-winning journalist Jenny Anderson and education expert Rebecca Winthrop about their groundbreaking book "The Disengaged Teen." They reveal the four key modes of student engagement:
• Resistor Mode: When students actively push back against learning
• Achiever Mode: The seemingly perfect students who may be struggling beneath the surface
• Passenger Mode: Students who are merely going through the motions of learning
• Explorer Mode: The optimal state where genuine learning and growth occur
Learn practical strategies to identify these modes in your teen and discover how to support their learning journey, whether they're excelling or struggling. Anderson and Winthrop share research-backed insights on why less than 10% of students experience explorer mode in school and how parents can create opportunities for authentic engagement at home.
This conversation offers valuable perspectives for any parent wondering why their teen seems disconnected from learning, including simple strategies to spark meaningful educational discussions and ways to support your child's natural curiosity and growth.
Based on extensive research and real-world experience, this discussion provides hope and practical solutions for parents navigating the challenges of teen engagement in education. Perfect for parents seeking to understand and support their teen's learning journey.

How to Help Without Hovering: Expert Parenting Advice
Listen to her justify why it’s OK for her to yell at people the way she feels like it but if someone else has a reason that she doesn’t like then that must be anger and frustration of an unacceptable type.
We can learn from traditional societies. But, we don't live in a traditional society if we live in the US. Take what we can, but not guilt if we just can't do everything people in multi-generational families can't do. I feel ao bad for not having a pristine home and evwrything organized right now.with 4 7 and under. My husband is from West Africa and I have felt I don't live up to a Senegales wife. He repeatedly reminds me that his mom had other adults in the home all the time and I am all alone and that it is OK.
It would be interesting to touch on allowances, have you incorporated those into your child rearing?
Love them!
Love this!!
Must be a feminist. The average man, who is able to overcome fear, absolutely can kill a wolf with their bare hands. They may lose one of them or receive ife changing injuries.
Hi Ladies! I’m so glad that I found this video. As someone who is going through a midlife crisis, I thoroughly enjoyed your discussion on this topic. I laughed and cried, and found commonality. Our youngest left home a few years now. But the death of several female relatives that I was close to and thought we’d grow old together have me in a deep “blah” and confusing season. Thank you… I feel some sense of hope. ❤
Such a thoughtful conversation. As a child who felt neglected being raised in the 1980's left to my own devices, I WANTED to care for my children. Now, they are 18 & 14. We homeschooled them. Everyone has time to be alone but many routines we do together: clean, cook, shop, play games, walk, talk, help each other and so on. We can only run from evolution for so long before it takes a toll. I'd rather my children be emotionally healthy, connected and supported than striving for academic success and checking off boxes with their peers.
I enjoy listening to your conversation!
Here is another way to say that someone is too old to go trick-or-treating: You’re taking candy away from the little kids!
Can't stand the 'you're too old to go trick or treating!' like, its so much fun, free candy, costumes, and the sneaky excercise, but seriously hate when other adults want to hamper on my fun just because I'm 'too old' You're NEVER too old to enjoy yourself and have fun, without fun we'll all die young and miserable,
I work at a parent participation preschool that has been a part of the community for 40 years and the director with several staff members included myself have worked in this program for over 25 years. Your messaging reminds me of the great late Bev Bos. Thank you Dr. Wuori
Gratitude. You need gratitude. Fulfillment comes from being, not in doing. Feeling content from ANYTHING outside yourself is seeking external validation. You must be happy with simply existing. Anything else will lead to suffering. Be careful of those internal voices and those external messages from media, movies, social media, etc. Our culture encourages low self-esteem because it makes money for the powerful. It’s fair game but just stay aware of it. It also encourages the victim mentality for the same reason.
Thank you so much Gabor & Gordon💓 . In need of this wisdom
Thats not crazy stuff
😮😢
I tell my kiddos that it is ok to be angry, it isnt ok to take it out on others. Their dad taught them it was ok to put the responsibility of their emotions onto others. Now that he is not around anymore, I have to reteach them that they are responsible for themselves. As our kiddos grow, teaching them to be able to express themselves while being responsible for themselves at the same time is so important. I grew up the same it was ok to have good emotions, but we couldn't be angry.
Please take this as a suggestion, not a hurtful insult : The roller coaster of singing the sentences in the intro, ( instead of just reading normally) the up and down tones actually fries the brains of some adhd listeners. ( It's painful and distracting. ) Love dr k. Thank you both for the interview.
"...view the world with new eyes again...!"
Thank you 🙏 What a beautiful way of describing current circumstances. Without protection from pain, we numb, and when we numb for long enough, it becomes disassociation and disintegration - we operate as an empty shell and fool everyone and ourselves. I’ve had the privilege to reintegrate, and deeply honour the protection, support and nourishment that will help all humans, esp the little ones thrive, grow, heal - such difficult work that you two have made a little easier 🐥 and i agree, our ancestors, even in death do so much to hold us if we give attention and tend that relationship - and our descendants too, physical and spiritual even before they are born 😄
But it's funny. Can't lie lol
No it's not.
Is that the case with under 12? I have a 9 year old. In your book, you say that at this age, you can and should set limits and stick to them consistently. Does this mean that we are aren’t going to do the weekly check-in and set boundaries with our children’s involvement until they’re older and in the post contemplation stage?
Women often under view the sacred communion of both roles being a big part of any young minds development
Great thanks very much 😅
Where do you get the book from Carolyn Rosenthal its hard to find
