Kenwood D74 D75 Knock-off battery Comparison to OEM

Kenwood D75 and D74 battery life is like holding water in your hand, it just drains away - quickly. What to do? Should you get a knock-off battery? Pro-tip - I would initially charge the knock-off battery in the cradle detached from the radio in case you bought a true piece of crap. You don't want to melt a crap battery to your nice radio! Also, I would only charge with the cradle, not thru the...

lol 😅
And that is why you guys (the Ham cadre) have ruined Ham radio for newbs (then you b**ch about nobody wanting to start)
Which budget price (cheap) hand held for under $40.00 bucks would you buy 🤷♂️
It's preference, like buying shoes. I wouldn't fret too much, get one with the plan of buying something better down the road. Maybe a yaesu ft-70 or 60? under $200. I like the UV-17r form factor a little better than this one...but they are very similar. At these prices you can get more than one and decide which one you prefer?
i only piss off people i know. classic !
Very cool, will try it. but, how do you restore the original image?
I'm not sure. I don't see an option for backing it up or reading the image from the radio. I'm not sure if a factory reset of the radio would bring it back? Please post this here if you are successful...thanks for watching!
The software link has a virus.
The one for the Baofeng??? Just checked with ESET...scans clean?
Lol lol
Who are you?
When I connect my UV-17R Plus radio I receive a message that says not the right amount of data we want. How do I get past that error? Thank you Sir.
Chirp or Baofeng software? Do you get same error with either? maybe when you get the error...turn off radio, reseat connector in to radio, turn radio back on, click ok. Also, have you successfully communicated with the cable you are using in the past?
😂😂😂😂😂😂
I knew joe biden was AI generated 😂
AI minus the I
Oyy Biden... Still beats that orange traitor rapist though.
I love this. You should do more!!! 😂
🇺🇸2️⃣🚫2️⃣4️⃣🇵🇸
What an absolute embarrassment Biden is. How people voted for this old career politician over one of the only people that was actively calling out the corruption and BS in DC is beyond me. People are easily indoctrinated nowadays.
This is bullshit
How can you tell?
Why did i think that was a old fatter elon musk at first!?
Older, fatter, and the opposite of rich. Other than that, the same
@@higginsreport 😆 🤣 😂
Biden is actually a bot!
Bwaaaaaahaaaahaaa 😂😂😂 omg it's sad though cause he does have dementia/Alzheimer's cause my dad does too.... I know the symptoms
This needs to go viral 😂😂😂

Bwaaaaaahaaaahaaa
I can not for the life of me get my 17R too work on chirp; I get Error reading data from radio; Not the amount of data we want. Does any ne have suggestion?
Chirp or Baofeng software? Do you get same error with either? maybe when you get the error...turn off radio, reseat connector in to radio, turn radio back on, click ok. Also, have you successfully communicated with the cable you are using in the past? Long shot, turn volume control all the way up after plugging in cable. I've had that work (I don't know why, maybe coincidence).
@@higginsreport thanks for the reply. I figured it out. Even though it was only a basic 17R, I had to use the 17 Pro software to make it work. Thanks again!!
New subscriber. I love your demeanor. I am new to amateur radio or more truthfully, I know absolutely nothing except how to turn the radio on 🤣
How did you program BM and then TGs into the ID-5100? That was pretty slick. I assume DTMF but still not sure how that would be programmed?
Using RT systems software you just put an entry under the DSTAR tab / DSTAR settings. Rather than a reflector entry you just have a "your call sign" entry of for example BM3102, then add another line for a TG, like 3100G. I also added a 4000P (for disconnect). Now when you go to "Your call Sign" on the radio you first select the BM3102 and PTT, once it connects to BM, then you select the TG and PTT. I've only done this with the Openspot 4 pro...works great!
Basically, its a POS. there is no way to unlock it and it has limited features. I bought one and it sits on the shelf with the rest of the HT's I have. Unless Baofeng comes out with a DMR/Fusion HT at this price I am tapping out...
I expect limited features in a $32 radio. I'm also not surprised when it's a dirty radio. I don't care personally whether it can be unlocked or not. I can't even buy a stock battery at this price for one of my Icoms. Granted, if this radio was $100...i would pass. I'm sold at this price point. That's just me. Thanks for watching!
@@higginsreport that’s funny because I bought the 5RM for 12 dollars new from aliexpress and it’s unlocked and transmits at 10 watts plus rx air band, so not really an excuse or answer for the 17R being such a piece of garbage. I will take the blame for buying it as most UA-camrs seem to get a free one to review.
The BAOFENG 17 plus can not be unlocked to do GMRS ?
Thoroughly enjoy the presentation. I live right outside of Oak Forest not too far away from you. 73
Get out of your mothers basement and touch grass
I'm in my own basement?...and I have allergies? :)
I have 4 of these, batteries suck! Don't buy this radio.
I haven't had any problems yet? I wonder if it's an issue with the charger? The manual says not to charge until depleted. I generally end up throwing it back on the charger way before it's depleted. I guess time will tell. Thanks for watching!
@@higginsreport The battery depletes too quickly for being 1800mAh. Standby time with no radio traffic for 10 hours kills the battery. On all my radios.
@@MrPoisony The plus should come with a 2500 mah battery. I will have to try doing some tests. thx
@@higginsreport You are right, I'm sorry. I do not have the Plus version, I apologize. They must have fixed the battery with the Plus version. Hope you have a better experience with the Plus than what I had with the non-Plus version.
@@higginsreport I believe the battery is 7.4 volts which requires you to use the Baofeng Wall Wart. Some people see the standard USB connector on the other ens of the cable and figure they can charge it with a standard 5VDC Wall Wart. Not so.
Okay A quick answer which to buy 17 or 17 plus
I'd go with the plus just because of the USB-C battery and higher rated capacity (since it's only $10 more)
@@higginsreport okay thanks for answering an ole ham radio man 👍
I would buy a Yaesu if you can afford it…
I agree, maybe like the FT-70DR. It's a better receiver and has digital capabilities. With C4FM and maybe an Open spot 4 down the road you can cross mode into DMR and DSTAR as well.
@@KH07734 I just happened to have the Yaesu 70 but it doesn’t do GMRS , So these BAOFENG and other cheap radios I can use to knock around with and we can use on GMRS 👍I have an older BAOFENG and it works ok 👌, for 20 or 30 bucks they’re worth what they do 👍
Compared to other HT radio prices this is perfect for me 😂
👋😂 so witch is better the 17 or 17 plus , only one
Of course it's a matter of opinion....my opinion is the plus is worth the extra 10 bucks or so. The USB battery alone is a step up in my book.
@@higginsreport thanks 👍
The AT-10G has AES broken. Just so anyone who needs to use this for a business can see. AES does not actually encrypt at all.
One CAN transmit without licence on 446mhz, and on some other freq i dont recall right now... here in sweden anyways...
Not here in the US. Thx for watching!
@@higginsreport so Pmr are licenced in the Us? - wow, its free almost everywhere else, - we are also free on 155mhz, and 27 + 31mhz
HELP! I am stuck on a Raspberry Pi, and it runs a flavor of Linux! I cannot get anywhere with my UV18H pro max... Oh I am good and stuck! I van read on one radio and erite on same. Cannot do an UV18!
Sorry John, I'm not sure what the problem is? I know you can run Chirp on the RP but I have never done it. There are some other YT video's demo'ing the UV18 with Chirp (probably Windows though?)....good luck and thanks for watching.
Thats a pretty big display. Does it have the SYNC menu option to display frequency & channel name simultaneously?
Not that I know of.....You can place the main band in Channel mode and the sub band in VFO mode and then make sure they are set to the same memory location. You'll have freq and name displayed at the same time. Unfortunately this defeats being to monitor 2 different frequencies at the same time - if both are set to the same memory channel.
@@higginsreport WOW thats too bad. I contacted Radioddity a while ago & they said only two Baofengs do this & are for sale on the Euro market. (not for sale here in USA). I really like the quality & size of the UV-17, but that no - SYNC is a deal killer. Might as well go back to my UV-82 with 2 line display.
When you were 9 miles away, you could have cross banded through your truck with your HT... right ? 🙂
If you mean could I CB repeat from my HT to the truck, then CB repeat from truck to home ID-5100...no, it won't work. It'll work for analog but I haven't gotten a "2 hop" digital transmission to work. Let me know if you can get it to work?
I just got one and so far I am pretty impressed. I love the firmware. It's so much easier to use than the uv-5r-based radios. The memory banks are a welcomed change.
Bought two of these in April 2024 and they were 83 dollars including tax shipping from China and it did include the programing cable. Friend tried to use Chirp to program it and it corrupted the firm ware so he was told to use the Baofeng software to program and it was a free download on line. Amazon provided a new radio for him free of charge.
In all fairness yes your getting a less expensive battery, but the life expectancy is horrible with them. My experience after charging them a few times is that you get the red flash of death from the drop in charger and they do not keep a charge....
thanks for the comment Mike, I haven't had mine long enough for it to crap out yet. I gone through many charge cycles and so far so good! Doesn't mean it will last :(
Yeah they are’t Zepplin and their not trying to be either, just so happens they sound like Zeppelin and their having fun doing it. So what’s the problem hatters .. life is too short. sit back and enjoy.. maybe the hatters are British wankers😂😂😂😂😂 cry babey’s ..
Thanks ! Really hope this might eliminate the long squelch tails.
Do-doo haha I’m retarded
I have a programming cable I've used on all my other radios but it won't physically fit in the UV-17R. The plug hits the body of the radio and won't plug all they way in. The socket on the radio is deeper than other radios.
my bad...I updated the description with a link to the cable I use. It is a tight fit, make sure it is fully seated. It may feel like it is, but it might not be....
This is the worst device and advice I have ever heard. At WRC23 we amateur radio operators came very close to losing part or all of the 2m band due to air traffic control requirements. So for God's sake, guys, use the 2m band as often as you possibly can or we'll lose it.
I feel misunderstood. This could be my legacy?

Big f****** deal just another ham Army Peter getting out like the other rest of the junk on the online
Thx for just another comment...
Don't you have to set the offset frequency on the repeater you programmed so it will access the repeater?
Yes. The way you do that depends on if you are using the Baofeng Software or Chirp. BF Software you set TX and RX frequency in respective field - which will achieve the offset. With Chirp in the duplex column, you select a "+" or "-" and the offset value is set in the next column
