1938 Zenith 9S262 Shutter Dial Tube Radio Part 7 of X Tuning Works continued
We finish up the tuning clockwork and get to the tone control switch. The last of the goofball Buster and Fred vids. I'll be starting on the Bert and Ernie videos, soon.

I've never seen what I call the "tuning clockwork" covered before, so I thought I'd spend some time on it here. I hope that someone finds it useful. Some of the last video taken of my old buddies Buster and Fred, too. Cheers! Michael
FIXED! 1938 Zenith 9S262 Shutter Dial Tube Radio Part 5 of X Finishing Up Basic Chassis Work
Переглядів 1,6 тис.4 роки тому
I kind of messed up the editing, the first time I put this one up. I've fixed it now. There's a lot of detail, intended mostly for folks who are pretty new at this. Maybe the quality of this series won't quite be up to scratch, but my hope is that there will still be tidbits that you can use. THANKS FOR WATCHING!

We finally got around to getting under this thing. This one is not really too bad. Everything is easy to see and reach. We had to do some minor troubleshooting in.....Uh, just watch the video!

Let's get to work doing what we always do first - removing all of the stuff that we could break if we got clumsy. Since I'm clumsy by nature, I like to get all of the "Fragile Stuff" off of the chassis as soon as possible!

I have a radio similar to this one where the cabinet is the same general shape (although the speaker "grill" has vertical wood columns) and a dial similar to the 14wg 806a and I cant find much info on the internet.

Is it possible to open and clean the volume pots on these? Unlike other volume pot manufacturers like a Zenith I don't believe these have a slot to shoot cleaner into

I have a 15" face GE wall clock similar to this one and the set knob came right off of the adjustment rod with a left hand thread but mine looks like a flat aluminum disc with a knurled outer edge not crimped like the one on the clock in your video.

I hate when you find a channel like yours, informative, fun, and with an interesting topic, and find that it isn't in active status anymore. I saw that you had some personal trials and tribulations, and some health issues. I hope that everything is OK.

Thanks for the demo. My sister has this Model in her basement. Was my, born in Poland came to US in1904 grandfather's. Got it to hear shortwave skips from Poland, Russia and Europe cause of the Nazi invasion. Last time serviced 1960's tubes. Last time I heard it work 1973 when I lived with them going to college at St.Johns Queens.N.Y. Cabinet in good shape but very dirty ,light metal corrosion, no paper cone on speaker.Alnico ?No cloth front cover.I wouldn't dare pug it in without an expert look over. I'm a guitarist real tube amp guy so I know better. She might restore it someday.

I just acquired one of these today myself, I noticed that your unit (which I realize this is an older video) is missing the plastic cover that goes over the turntable mechanism and the metal grille above the front display has speakers in it. Mine unfortunately is missing the turntable platter and the cartridge for the tonearm, and the record pickup arm is seized up.

I hate rubber insulated hookup wire. I find that the different colors exhibit different symptoms of deterioration. For instance, yellow may form 'rosary' beads, red may slit laterally and green may remain supple and okay. Must have something to do with the coloring agents/pigments used.

Informative video, thanks for posting. I have a KS460U and your guidance was useful in removing the chassis. I'm scrapping the console due to space considerations and hope to house the chassis in a smaller cabinet. I'll use external speakers. Did you have to service the diode/rectifier arrangement on yours? I'm not even sure yet what type I have on my unit, but have read that it's a common problem with these Grundig sets.

I really appreciate you produce these videos, especially for this model I have the 41-280 and I just started the restoration in the past 3 weeks I've owned this unit since 1988 and have been dragging around my life and tending to restore it gathering parts along the way Several things you know kind of held me back and stumbling blocks but working through those I have extensive electronics knowledge but nothing from that error and I'm learning from you. Thank you for producing these videos, especially for this model

once on a X-ray service call I found the problem to be the 6-deck rotary switch for the exposure timer was missing the wiper on 1 deck, the contacts had sliced it in two from being operated thousands of times between 1938 to 1979 when I drew the short straw so to speak. Desperate I fabricated a wiper from the metal lid of a 'Buss' brand plastic fuse container and silver soldered it in place. It worked fine, and I figured it would last at least 6 weeks, and I should have a part within 30 days, so being over 500 miles from home, I drove home & ordered part the next day at the office, and carried on as a field service engineer. When part came in & hospital contacted they said to wait until it broke, then bring it & install it, they had paid for the part, so okay. We took that machine in when we installed a new system there in 1980, the old one was re-sold locally to a clinic, while I installed the new one, and I re-installed the old unit upon my return, placing the new deck switch still in the package in the bottom inside floor 'tray' of the x-ray control, I could always drop by and install it when the one I repaired finally failed. It was still there in 1989 which by then I was in another State as a Factory service representative, but later in 1992 met a veteran who had worked at a local (to there) clinic that bought it from the local clinic I had re-installed it in, and he said it still worked fine, and the new switch was still in the base of the machine behind the cover. This balances the universe where the brand new part that took 2 weeks to get overnight air freight again over 500 miles from home, up in the Ozark mountains, in winter, fails in 3 days.

I have a similar radio with similar issues that I need to fix. Interesting that the dial light starts out bright, then dims, and gets bright again as the filaments in the tubes come up to temperature.
