Hey Man: Ep.9 - The Real Scoop on Drumming, Speed, & Drum Solos
Coming to you this week form Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada and the Fallsview Casino & Resort where I am playing several shows with Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame Members: The Platters.
*Their 1955 hit song "Only You" is the soundtrack of the very first scene in the new Deadpool and Wolverine movie.
Today, let's talk about drumming, hand speed, and how I am preparing for this short drum solo that I have to play during the show. I don't often play drum solos in live shows, but when I do, I try to create something that's fun & entertaining (and in this case is tied into the history of Rock-n-Roll music).
After I show you one of the warm-ups that I use before the show, we will look at a short clip of the solo from that very first Platters show so you can see the results.
I'll also go into some detail about the thoughts I have about crafting this solo and the approach I'm taking to make something that makes this fun and exciting for the audience.

I've had a few folks ask me about tipping as a "thank you" for these videos. That would be greatly appreciated! Here's those links:

My favorite moment in the Forever Motown show is when we play a medley that includes my favorite Marvin Gaye song, “What’s Going On?”. I’m sharing this snippet as a real-world example of something I talked about in my newest “Hey Man!” UA-cam video: playing with the right volume, dynamics, and attitude for the situation. During the soundcheck for this song, my enthusiasm had me playing too loud...

Supercharge Your Swing: Jazz Drumming Primer
Yeah if someone buys and brings it home and uses it they say it’s considered “used”. But if they take a floor model which in reality is used by way more people who a lot of the times aren’t treating it good, they consider it new as long as it was never purchased. I only like buying new because I treat my gear good. In my opinion floor models should be even cheaper than used models given the abuse they get by random people who mess with it everyday. It should be illegal to consider floor models new.
Sweetwater would never !!!!!! Smh now I now to never buy anything from them !!
That’s a relic from warm audios custom shop 😝
It’s definitely seen enough use to qualify as relic’ed! 🤣😂 Thanks for watching!
Wow….. unbelievable.. I prefer Zzounds
I bought a Sire H7 guitar from Zzounds about 3-4 months ago (they were the only retailer who had them in stock at the time) and had a wonderful experience with them. The guitar arrive in perfect condition, set up perfectly. I’d definitely buy from them again in the future.
Thanks for posting this. Sadly many online retailers are doing the same thing, though maybe not to the extent Musician's Friend is doing it.
You’re welcome!! Just sharing my experience so that others can know to be cautious when doing the same. There will be a Part Two soon.
that is so gross, unfortunately working in retail I know first hand that people are getting blemished items shipped direct from stores when they buy things off the website. It sometimes shocks me what managers will say to ship out knowing that it is just going to make a customer mad and inconvenienced and will surely result in an immediate return. If you have a local store with the item you want it is well worth shopping in person!
Thanks for sharing your behind-the-scenes insight on this. No matter what sort of store or retail vertical we’re talking about, the customer experience is what keeps them coming back (well before price, proximity, etc.). To do something like what I (and many others who have left comments) experienced might get something done immediately (i.e. a single, simple transaction), but it’s short sighted because it doesn’t ever play well long term, especially when it creates buyer’s remorse.
@ agreed, unfortunately there are incentives, be them minor for store managers to have 100% fill rate on orders that come through ship from store portals. Also where I am we no longer can order things like bubble wrap and other packing materials so that is probably a reason why things that come direct from stores seem to be packed too frugally. I like being creative with it and reusing materials, but sometimes you really do need to have some decent supplies available to ship certain items. All that being said, It does seem unusual that Musician's Friend isn't exchanging your mic for an unopened one. That is quite shocking. I think you will get what you want if you make a call or two and insist on escalating the complaint. I don't think it was worth it for them to hesitate and now have this video out there😹
@@nico37Some correspondences are currently in progress (more on that in Part Two once it has been completely resolved). Seems that they definitely regret having this video out in the world. Thanks to UA-cam for giving consumers a platform to air these issues, I guess?
Fantastic content on your channel Brian! Great point made regarding speed and its overall usefulness when it comes to musicality in supporting a band and any given song to be played. For me, space between notes played and dynamics are so important in creating a good feel and groove. I hope to find your email info and hopefully drop by for a lesson someday. Keep the vids coming!
Thanks so much!! (The next video will be sort of a Part Two to this one). I appreciate you watching and leaving such a great comment!! My email is super easy: Brian@BrianStephens.com - I would love to have you swing by the studio for a lesson anytime! 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Man this is really frustrating to hear. I’d have been super pissed at getting something thrown in that case, Clearly Opened too
Thanks, buddy. Yeah, I was a lot more angry than this video shows (keep it all on the inside, right?) There will be a Part Two to this and, while not yet fully resolved, it’s already shaping up to be quite an interesting story. Stay tuned!!
The Platters in Canada??? Cool!
Yep! For 3 shows this past week! Hopefully, they’ll be back for more in 2025 AND I’ll be with them again too?
Thanks for posting this! I have a few things that I am shopping for, for myself and for my kid for a gift.... MF/GC has some items at a decent price point on sale right now and I almost ordered one of them yesterday. I will stick to only buying from the local GC in person if/when I go there, and as for ordering online I will stick to Sweetwater and AMS which have been great over many purchases for over a decade of buying from them. thanks again, and I hope to see how it works out in the long run...and I hope that they do make this right for you...
Thanks for watching and for leaving a note. Yes, after going thru this, I’d recommend going to an actual store if you can. Glad I could help you avoid this unfortunate situation that I got into. Good luck with your next purchase, whoever it’s from. 👍🏻👍🏻
I really enjoyed this video. This was my first one. I am not a drummer, but involved in music. I think you are giving great insight of music as a whole. I'll be watching more and learning more too. \m/
Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment. In addition to the 8 other Hey Man! episodes, there are tons of informative videos here on the channel!! If you have any questions, put them down in the comments section and I’m always happy to get a conversation started there! 🤜🏻🤛🏻 Welcome!!
I bought a guitar amp from my local Guitar Center years ago. Right out of the box you could hear something wasn't right. Sounded as if the speaker was blown, returned it and they wouldn't give me my money back so I got store credit. I used the credit to buy whatever I could and have never been back.
Sadly, your story is incredibly similar to so many here in the comments. Should we start a support group? 🤣😂
I doubt they care. And please don't start videos with "this is not the video I wanted to make" 🤦🙄
Yeah, they do care. Just got a call and an email from one of their reps yesterday, specifically after she saw this video. Part Two coming next week.
Agreed, used.
Thanks for watching and leaving a note!! 🤜🏻🤛🏻
After I found out my local guitar center was upcharging brand new products I only use sweetwater and thomann (they'd have a new budget guitar you could buy anywhere else for $300 selling for $400 for example)
The horror stories (like yours) in the comments for this video just leave me shaking my head. Crazytown!! 🤦♂️ Thanks for watching and leaving your story. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Try before you buy from GC! Go directly to the store. Thats the only way to sniff out shenanigans like this. They need to disclose B stock or floor models. I hope they make this right
It’s still a work in progress as of this moment. I have a feeling there will be a part two coming very soon. Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment.
If that is not stated anywhere in their site or in the purchase agreement, I can imagine a lawsuit being completely viable.
One would think…
That is illegal sales practice by way of false advertisement. Call the BBB
Depending on how this turns out….
Damn! Thats look horrible.
😂🤣😂 It was! (I can laugh about it now, but yeah, it’s a wonder steam wasn’t coming out of my ears.)
Great video! I've been thinking about getting a vintage Zildjian ride like that myself. I wasn't sure if I should clean it or not, but I'll definitely clean it. Thanks a bunch!
Don’t be scared!! Clean that fella! I promise you that you’ll be glad you did. 👍🏻👍🏻
Got a 700 $ ride cymbal from there came in a box no padding 2 big dings on edge set it back for another 1 .The next one came was even worse with scratches finger prints and more dings .Sent it it back ,f .k em I do Sweetwater for good now .Musicians Friend in Guitar Center that's all there is to that .
Man, so sorry. Seems like a running theme here in my comments section. Thanks for watching and for telling your story. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Im in Ny so i can go to B&H but if not its sweetwater or front end audio.
All are great choices. I’ve gotten a huge amount of my camera & video gear from B&H.
Man.. do you edit your videos? Great recording, great editing and good presentation on the subject. Do You work with something on the area?
Thanks so much! Yep, I do every bit of it all by myself. Glad you enjoyed it all so much. Thanks for watching and for leaving such an awesome comment! 🤜🏻🤛🏻 There’s a bunch more here on the channel to check out.
Same story with instruments. I got 2 amazing basses thru the floor model process, at thousands a piece. One was unplayable, but GC fixed the frets
Did they foot the bill to fix those frets?
Yes, the tech can’t do a good setup, but he can do a good fret job!
I just bought this same mic for $49 as B stock 😂
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Hysterical!! 🤜🏻🤛🏻
I bought one item from them: a Walrus Audio Monument. It advertised "New" and a specific limited edition colorway. What arrived was just the pedal floating around in a generic cardboard box, and a completely different colorway. They told me I should have read the fine print. They were right. And I also will never buy from them again. Pedal is awesome though, thanks Walrus!
So sorry, man. That “read the fine print” thing is hogwash. Not any sort of way to treat a customer if you want them to stick around. Thanks for watching and for sharing your story!
This happened to me with some Kali speakers I bought. They were on sale, said nothing about used, b-stock, refurbished. It was for a brand new pair. They sent me floor models. I called and got the price reduced even further another $200. I still ended up returning them because I didn't like them but yeah. I won't shop with GC/MF anymore.
It’s staggering the amount of people who have shared stories like yours in the comments section. Thanks for watching & for sharing. Maybe this will shine a light on a huge problem. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Thank you for the video. This is a horrible company practice. This is deception, straight up. Not sure how they are doing this legally.
I’m not sure either. 🤷🏼♂️ Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Awesome groove and dynamics! You’re a consummate professional. I notice you have the metronome at 102 bpm - out of curiosity is that just for reference or is the band hearing the click too?
Thanks so much!! I’m the only person with click in the ears. I use the Tempo app to make sure we always start a song at the tempo that was originally decided upon at soundcheck / preshow, but whoever sings lead on each song always reserves the right to look back and have me adjust that up or down at any point in the show.
@@BrianStephensOfficial makes sense thanks for the reply!
Happened to me on a tele I bought on stupid deal of the day. Guitar was beat to death and advertised new. I was told that was the last one they had even though still posted on the site. Got my money back and bought from sweet water. Never again GC
We should start a club with all of the folks who have left their horror stories in this comments section! 😉😂🤣
I've been saying for years new (basses and guitars) at guitar center are not exactly new. But this is new, in that it is a new low.
It’s real. That’s for certain!
Insane that the company's failing because of this and they continue to do it anyways. I've even heard stories of people getting a completely different model than they ordered.
Yeah, I don’t understand how this sort of thing has become normalized. It’s bizarre.
I learned a long time ago that the stupid deal of the day isn’t talking about the item, it’s them calling their buyers stupid for taking the deal. They know they’re selling garbage and they don’t care.
Wowsers! I never thought of it like that!
Sweetwater has great customer service, i have returned a few things and no questions asked.
This is how almost ALL of the deal of the days go. Its either this: 1) an accessory like a guitar case or something, these will be new 2) a not crazy discount on a normal guitar maybe 450 today but normally 500, should be okay, 3) this is the danger one, any time you see a MASSIVE "deal", over half off, hundreds of, it's going to be a lemon someone returned. I tried to get a Music man bass that was normally 900 and it was like 400 off, it had a huge gash in the finish at the neck, it was clearly either a return or a straight up b stock that MM sent MF. I returned it.
I’ve heard more stories like this than I count over the last 3 days! Sorry, man. Thanks for watching & for sharing your story!
@@BrianStephensOfficial Thanks for your video. More videos need to be made like this, I should have made one about the MM bass. I've gotten two cases on DotDs since then but I won't touch anything beyond that from them anymore. I have 0 trust in MF and will not buy from Guitar Center unless I can physically touch the item before I can buy it. It's a shame, GC didn't used to be this bad.
This video is stealth sponsored by Sweetwater. Earlier this year I was looking to get a Lewitt mic from Sweetwater and they had a demo unit listed. Tossed it in my cart and didn't immediately check out. The next day I'm emailing with my SW agent and he informed me that the mic had sold. Check my cart and it's still in there, but my guy says it sold. So I went and checked out w/o issue. He seemed dubious it'd go through. A little later he wrote to say they were giving me a NEW mic, but honoring the demo price! Unlike your tale of woe they didn't go down the chain to fill an order, they went UP to get it done.
Wowsers!! That’s why they’re getting most of the business online these days! (Side Note: Oh how I wish I would’ve gotten some of that sweet, sweet Sweetwater cash for them sponsoring this video! 🤑) How do you like that Lewitt mic?
I was considering buying a used guitar from them. I think perhaps I should not...
Unless you’re able to play it first, I would advice against it. I bought a new guitar from them about 4 months ago and immediately sent it back. The strings were essentially laying on the frets when at full tension.
Dude I almost bought that mic. A matter of fact I went back to look for it and it was no longer there. Thanks for the heads up
You might’ve dodged a very large bullet, my friend. Still haven’t completely sorted all of this out.
They have been doing this forever. They usually do it with low stock or demo so that getting a brand new one is going to be difficult. All this crap ramped up during the lockdown and never stopped.
That’s exactly what the rep said in the phone call that I recorded and that is in the video. How flippant he was about it throughout the whole call really disturbed me. That means it happens A LOT!
@@BrianStephensOfficial Yeah I wrote my comment before you played the recording. It’s good you have that. I have a feeling you won’t have to worry or fight too hard about the return policy restocking fee. They know all too well what the deal is with this. Another important thing you bring up is the difference between buying used and getting a demo. A used item that hopefully was bought brand new and one person used it vs a demo model which we all know gets abused mercilessly at a GC are quite different. Like you said it’s all about honesty. Tell the truth about what you’re paying for and there’s usually not a problem.
The exact same thing happened to me. I called to make sure it wasn’t B-stock or used and was told it was new. When I took it out of the big box, the product box was chewed up a bit and when I opened the case, it looked exactly like yours, covered in chicken grease. Mine also had a screw missing from the heat sink. I immediately called Musicians friend to complain and was told it was indeed a Guitar Center floor model and was offered a return or a $50 discount. I took the discount but made sure I could return it if I wanted. I was assured the 45 day return policy would apply. One thing I will point out is that the crud did come off. Thankfully so.
Between something rattling in the power supply and that crud on the mic… you saw it. I didnMt said it in the video but it was obvious that the set screw that holds everything together had been taken out at some point, maybe to repair the mic? I couldn’t do it. It was just too much. So sorry you had the same issue.
Even with stupid deal of the day, which I rarely look at now, I am hard pressed to wonder why anyone would not just use Sweetwater.
Well, going forward, Sweetwater will get all of my business.
Thanks for this, I won't buy from Musicians Friend at all now.. If i am buying something new I expect something new not B Stock or Floor models. Unless I absolutely know it is Floor Model or Blemished. That is a Rip off Bait and switch.. Never have and never will buy from Musicians Friend thank you
You’re welcome! Glad I can help you avoid this sort of debacle, Ken. If you need something, give my guy Shelby at Sweetwater a call. Thanks for watching & leaving a comment.
This really got me pissed off. Made a vid of my own about it. Went HARD on MF/GC/Bain Capital… lol. Good luck. Don’t back off. Marty
Thanks so much, Marty!! I’ll go check it out! And thanks for having these conversations with me out loud and publicly. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
First of all, 100% agree with you regarding expectation. If you're buying a floor model, B-stock or scratch and dent, however they want to label it, that should be clearly identified regardless if the item is on sale or not. This is post Chapter 11 Musician's Friend and Guitar Center, trying desperately to make restructuring work any way they can.... I have a story for you. I bought a nice Taylor from local Guitar Center. Not a GS Mini or Academy, this model over $1400. The action was a bit high, took it to a local Taylor guitar silver certified tech who told me the neck was bowed in such a way he couldn't fix it without a replacement neck... I took this back to Guitar Center on return, explained to them the defect showed them a picture of the Taylor certified tech's wall plaque from Taylor gave the manager his number... Three weeks later, I see the defective guitar back on the rack. I have a photo of the serial # so I know it's the same one. The problem not fixed. Some unsuspecting Musicians Friend buyer will likely end up with this guitar... Do not buy product from Guitar Center, Musicians Friend or Music & Arts. They are a struggling business doing shady things.... When it comes to guitars, I'm also hearing through the grape vine, which includes people in the know, that some builders send places like Sweetwater, Chicago Music Exchange and other big name on-line guitar sellers their top tier A stock. These companies open every box to take pictures and perform inspections, so the guitar builders know if they send less than perfect product, a customer's never even going to see it, it's going to be coming right back. When it comes right back where do you think it goes? Off to big box resellers who sell only "factory sealed"
You just completely blew my mind!! 🤯 Thanks for sharing this story. I wish there was a way to beam it out over every channel OTHER than UA-cam all at once! 😳
Musician's Friend is still around? Seriously, I thought they went out of business a long time ago.
🤣😂🤣😂 Yep, still plenty of us around to dup, I guess. 🫢🤭
Every store in North America sells open box/returns/used as new. Not many of us complain. Those that do get store credit. Every store.
Not sure I agree with this statement. Sure, they might sell the stuff but it’s generally clearly marked as such, especially if an item is pretty well used. There’s a small Mom & Pop music store that I’m stopping at before I hit the airport tonight. I’ll take an informal poll of the staff while I’m there.
I ordered a D’Angelico guitar from Musicians Friend. It arrived with rusty strings missing the tremolo bar and case candy. I sent it back immediately the same day and they tried to charge me for the missing parts that were never in the box. I stopped buying for them at that point.
So sorry to hear that, but thanks for sharing your story. And thanks for watching! 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Who knows how many times that was on a mic stand and took a hard fall. Yikes.
Yep, no telling how many people have spit into it already, too. 🤢🤮
These days if it’s a good MF deal it is a return/used item from the MF site or guitar center store. They will ship returned items as new, they will sell you a GuitarCenter floor model that’s been sitting around for years getting touched by everyone.
I definitely learned the hard way. 🤦♂️.
Getting hepatitis just looking at the mic
😂🤣😂🤣 Oh No!! 😂🤣😂 Hysterical
