Mating Dust Mites
House Dust Mites are the #1 source of indoor allergens, and can cause asthma, rhinitis, and eye and skin symptoms. Dust mites are so tiny that during sex, sperm can only exit single file! As a result, mite mating last for hours to days.

Dust Mites in Pancake Flour

A woman in Massachusetts had an episode of eyelid and lip swelling, and a subsequent episode of generalized hives, facial swelling, and wheezing requiring emergency treatment, after cooking and eating pancakes made from pancake flour that she had stored in her kitchen cabinet for 2 years. Allergy skin tests were negative to wheat, but strongly positive to dust mites, and to the stored pancake m...

Mites and Mite Feces on Woven Encasings and Non-Woven Encasings.mov

Microfiber pillow and mattress encasings used to prevent the escape of allergen may be "Woven" (woven on a loom from microfiber yarns and filaments) or "Non-Woven" (made of randomly overlapped filaments glued and heat compressed). Felt although not a microfiber is an example of a non-woven fabric. This video illustrates that non-woven microfiber encasings actually allow dust mite penetration an...

    • @jeffreymillermd

      Yes. One small bit of newer knowledge is that warm water washing is sufficient in top loading washing machines (where the blanket is submerged in water for longer periods of time, allowing the mites to die by drowning) but hot water should be used in the newer, front loading "high efficiency" washing machines, where the items are repeatedly sprayed but not allowed to soak for long. Most high efficiency machines have a direct temperature control, so there is no need to raise the temperature of the hot water throughout the house. Separate from allergen-avoidance, another change is a newer treatment alternative to allergy injections, namely "sublingual immunotherapy".

      @@jeffreymillermd Thank you for your reply. I'm currently doing allergy injections (specific immunotherapy) for the second time, I started half a year ago. I have not considered sublingual immunotherapy, but I will talk to my doctor about it.

      @@Virtuoso-wz5lq It sounds like you have done the right things for dust mite allergy. However, I am tired from clinical practice, and cannot give individual medical advice remotely. Are you sure that you don't have another allergy or another condition altogether? Have you seen a Board Certified Allergist?

      @@Virtuoso-wz5lq As I said, I cannot make diagnostic or treatment recommendations specific to your case. But in situations like this, possibilities to think about include: 1. You know that I have a commercial conflict of interest here, but it is a fact that some encasings marketed as being mite-allergen-proof are not. 2. There might be unrecognized sources of mite exposure (e.g. a couch, a damp basement, clothing) 3. there could be a concomitant condition in addition to the mite allergy (e.g. an allergy to cow's milk or another food; nasal polyps; chronic sinusitis) 4. an adjustment of medication may be required. (if the mite allergy is strong enough it might not respond to allergen-avoidance alone). The bottomline is that this should be the allergist's problem to solve, and you should consider returning to your allergist to report your lack of response, or consider obtaining a second opinion.

      😢 ive dealth with dust mites twice, this time I almost got rid of em again which took me about 2 - 2 1/2 months. Ive smothered em in baby oil all over my body, other creams, clorox the floor, poison the floor, tossed my bed, been sleeping in a gamer chair for 2 months, smoke bombed the house and car, used rubbing alcohol, and more... it seems they hate mint so i coat myself in mouthwash... it helped. I mop my floor in poison meant for them.

    I was recently diagnosed with dust mite allergy. My doctor gave me your information and also suggested an air purifier but I see you are not pro air purifiers for mites. Thinking she did so more for other allergies such as pollen and pet dander Any thoughts ?

    • @jeffreymiller4534
      @jeffreymiller4534 2 роки тому

      You are correct. Air cleaners produce the most benefit for allergens that stay in the air for long periods of time, namely pet allergens and pollens. Most mite allergen exposure is from direct contact with bedding, clothing, carpets, upholstered furniture, etc. Mite allergens become airborne when these materials are disturbed, but the allergens fall from the air relatively quickly, and are thus not available for removal by air purifiers. An air purifier can't hurt, but it is low on the list of priorities for mite allergy.

    @Jeffrey Miller I have House dust mite allergy . Can you just tell me why do i get runny nose just after waking up from bed in morning? As dust mites have been excreting their faeces throughout night & it has been going into my nose . I get allergy rhinitus when i stay in my bed room only and by God's grace not anywhere else in my house. I have changed pillows , matressess , blankets everything with synthetic cotton from natural cotton as my doc said. It's a very hectic depressing process to reduce dust by cleaning every week . And i smoke cigarettes inside that room ? I dispense the ash in the ash tray. Is there any problemn with that ?
