👋 Hi, I'm Sean Waters, and I teach at Colorado State University.
👋 HELLO!
My name is Sean Waters - and I'm a happiness nerd. I teach writing at Colorado State University, sometimes teach philosophy at our local community college, and lead self-authorship and creative leadership courses with the Wisdom Workshop (www.wisdomworkshop.io). My MA thesis in Philosophy (2008) compared scientific and Buddhist approaches to depression, and my MA project in English Education (2012) was a suite of resources to teach philosophy to young adults using young adult literature. I love creating spaces for people to discover and design more meaningful work and more fulfilling lives.
I founded the Wisdom Workshop to re-imagine adult education for the 21st century. Not in an abstract sense, but in hands-on, interpersonal deep-dive cohorts designed to help us each practice mindful presence, transform our sense of self, and thrive through the transitions in our lives. If you're on a journey of awakening for the well being of all concerned, inclined to practical philosophy, or east-west approaches to positive psychology I'd love to learn together. I also love your reading suggestions :)
I said I love music -- this is true -- especially the process of songwriting and producing with my friends. My music Spotify/Apple with Sean Waters & the Sunrise Genius, or follow this link:

and I write a fun newsletter on Substack:

Thanks, Liam, for the gift. I'm glad you gave this book to me! I'm on a mission to wake people up to their potential. This book has that power because it asks us the most important question of all: WHAT IS REALLY, ACTUALLY, TRULY IMPORTANT? and better: WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT, TODAY!?!?!? work with me, talk with me, listen to our music here: linktr.ee/wisdomworkshop and also, this is ...

These are great ideas.... I really like the last one about who would you like to reach out to, what would you want to say to them... I think that really spoke to my heart. Thank you
What is weird is that I've always done this and never knew it was an actual thing...common place book....I just be journaling.... I'm common placing 😊😅 New Subscriber ❤
ahhh! me too! When I found this description I resonated sooo much with it. As a way of tracking synchronicities especially.
Do you use any pedals are are you a straight in the amp guy? Oh & it's a GREAT book, not good, great 🧐✨😎
depends on the situation :) a pretty basic pedal guy
Book changed my life, read it when I was 16 , due to takeover my fathers farm as I am the eldest , I gave that right to my sister and went up to Dublin to study philosophy , that made me want to be a psychiatrist went to medical school and became one
Thanks Sean! I really appreciate your straight-forward explanation.
Do I also own an acoustic and a cigar box guitar that I don’t play? Yes 😂
Woah, I’m honestly shocked this doesn’t have more views, you have such a nice way of explaining these ideas. You saved my philosophy grade, thanks sm 😸
Thank you so much #underrated. Lowkey tho.... Tons of people need this lol 🤣
Which book you are reading?
Out of all explanations of a common place book, this is the only one that truly made sense to me. Thank you.

When I said freshman year I didn’t know what college I wanted to go to counselor told me “you’re supposed to know this stuff already”. And I was thinking “Bitch who tf”. Now I’m a senior and still have no idea what I’m doing but I think I’ll figure it out sooner or later.
I found your youtube channel out of nowhere, it ressonates a lot with me. Please teach more about selflove
Excellent. You really breaks through the copy and paste formula of most college classes to talk about real shit in class, we love it!!! Sean Waters = the G.O.A.T!
Everything is in constant change. A behaviour that as a child for example was 'good' or beneficial, as an adult might be hell for you... What might be a cure for someone, might be a poison for someone else, or might depend on the dosage... I like the concept of adaptive/maladaptive, which I think it owns to the philosophy of Nietzsche a lot
thanks for helping me with ap lang :-)
'Quality'? Clearly, as Justice Potter Stewart remarked of pornography, 'I can't say what it is, but I know it when I see it.' Ho hum. Or as the Romans had it, 'De gustibus, non est disputandum'. So far as 'taste' ('quality') goes, there's no accounting for anyone else's, unless they already agree with you. Now we have that sorted, let's go have a good (ie high quality) time.
I'm in ;)
Nice introduction! #FreePalestine
I wish more professors and teachers think, speak and teach like you! Just fantastic!
aww, that's so nice -- what about how I think/speak/teach ? not trolling, just curious :)
Thank you
thank YOU! you're oh so very welcome
There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a book of pertinent information marked up with annotations! It means the reader truly appreciated it. :)
Adore your channel
gratzi!

10:00 id like to attempt to expand more on that because there seems to be finer lines to distinguish The act of philanthropy can be use only for the intent of promotional reasons; here is where trust is "ill gotten" because its simply bought off and the fault is on the actor. Then on contrary Individuals would use "good" as a guise, not so much with bad intentions but to satisfy the need of social acceptance; here its important to note that the fault is no so much (or not always) on the person but also a community that automates to prejudgment and only offers a limited avenue to confidence. The case being made is that "looking good" can be an error of circumstance made by a collective authority when proof of trust is limited to say Nepotism/favoritism a small circle; where you have to sell yourself to overcompensate if your a stranger. Perhaps avocation needs to come from others (vouchers) and not so much the person alone. To have representatives. If we need lawyers for court then we need vouchers for acceptance in other criteria's (jobs/dating/clubs)
'not be just a tool': a key sentence to me
yep. I've been playing with being a tool for a worthwhile project, too ... thanks for the c comment
@@WisdomWorkshop Thanks for the reply. Can you elaborate on what you mean by a tool for a worthwhile project?
This is an accessible and engaging explanation, I appreciate you making this! I'll definitely be referring back in the future. I found the first part of the video and the explanation of the lack of separateness to be particularly helpful. As much as I don't like videos with different "parts," I feel like maybe the last third might have made a good separate video if you're worried about it being too much at once.
I started to journal when i was very young, but eventually lost the habit. Recently I decided Id try to start again. Ive tried in the past, but i always let it go. So this time i was determined to fill a goal of writing at least one entry every single day. I knew if i didnt force myself to make it a habit, i would never do it. And in less than three months ive filled the three hundred pages. I think it helped a lot with understanding myself. And even the days i didnt know what to write, i still just wrote about that. Not knowing. Wrote about my thoughts. My feelings on something that happened over the day. Sometimes all i need the journal for is something to let bad feelings out. It usually helps, and while i write the bad, i try talking to myself usuing the journal. And usually when im done with the days entry, i feel a little better. You dont always have to write tons of pages. Sometimes my entries were only a single sentence. But you should try writing at least something every day. I know its begun to help me.

Rather than having one spectrum from utilitarianism to deontology, we could think about having two spectra: one for utilitarianism by itself, and one for dwontology by itself. Then, you would consider each issue according to both spectra.
Love this insight.
Also, shout out to Hungarians (unless it's Viktor Orbán, he can fk right off), I always forget we make some pretty good music lol
Solid vid, was gonna fangirl over having new Nietzsche content to watch but then saw RICHARD FREAKIN TARNAS BOOKS and now I'm just trying to process my two fave things (philosophy and astrology and its patterns through human history) in proximity to each other lol
YES!!!! I love Richard Tarnas so much. What a great history of the western mind and fascinating study of the gravity of bodies!!
I can relate wholeheartedly with deontology. In either case as a matter of utility a duty is an established boundary meant to uphold the greatest common good ( categorical imperative) and the best utility a liberal ( free) society has to offer. Duty also allows for the possibility of gradual change by virtue of consensus building as a matter of principle.
Yes! And aligns with a character -attribute model of ethics of care or virtue ethics 😃
Started to reread this book after 40 plus years. Brought me to tears as I started reading that first chapter. Beautiful prose and personal memories of the journey of how I got to where I am now. Put it down after a couple pages. Some things are best remembered as they were. Probably the most important book of my life at the time I read it. The perfect knife.
Amazing comment my friend !!!
Would the holocaust be acceptable in kants philosophy because nazis did not want jewish people to exist universally

Yeah, naah. I recently read it and it's crap. Self-indulgent navel gazing typical of the 70s.
love this critique -- he's totally self-absorbed and kind of frightening, actually, if you were his son. ... and STILL I think important to raise the question of quality
This couple of videos have been pretty useful!! Thank you for sharing!!
thanks :)
I started out as a kid, crazy about motorcycles. I found Pirsig's book and Guevera's Motorcycle Diaries and find myself far from motorcycles anymore. The only thing that matters to any of us now is stopping fascism.
I love a nice walk! It's been a while since meditation was a deliberate part of my day, but I like to think I carry on the practice throughout the day in other ways :)
Skating good for mindfulness 😌
What you holding
I hope that you read comments, because this helped me so much. I have a six page paper due tonight, and I had the options of not doing it, reading 150 pages, or finding a video like this that breaks everything down. I read all the entire section on Mill's and you made it so much easier to understand. Thank you so much!
Thanks man 🙏 philosophy is the shit

I wish this type of content never became a thing. You added nothing to a video made by someone else. Just threw yourself on there so you can steal content and post it
