I always tried to listen to Arnolds phantastic symphonies just as unique great music composed by nothing less than a genius. But with this seventh I cant any longer try to get out of understanding it against the background of his mental issues (but this shoudnt belittle his grade himself neither his marvellous work).

Les 2 versions sont superbes, la deuxième est encore plus pathétique que la 1ere. C'est incroyable qu'elle ne soit pratiquement jamais jouée. J'imagine le triomphe qu aurait pu faire Horowitz en les jouant l'une après l'autre en fin de concert !

Breathtaking, just breathtaking! So thankfull that I discovered this outstanding composer!

Exceptionel

Malcolm Arnold seemed to love Tschaikowsky. There are several quotations of the Pathetique not only in this symphony.

Medtner sounds great here much better more sensible than Feinberg who was a grea teacher with an important reputation as a pianist.Life in russia was unimaginable so nne o fus know why Feinberg's playing on his op.57 is so baaaad!

younger versions of this score have many additions to the second movement like pedal markings, portato, crescendos and decrescendos that aren't in this first edition. this first edition is 100% beethoven's intentions right?

This was my first hearing of the 2nd version. It's quite different. Rimsky-Kosakov definitely made the right decision to publish the 1st version.

Heleni Barjau i Vallmitjana (Barcelona, 1921 - Mexico City, 2000), was a Catalan tenor noted for his recordings of La Traviata and Il trittico with Victoria de los Ángeles. Though born in Spain, he fled to Mexico with his family in 1939. He is professionally known as Carlo del Monte.

In my view, the finest of the four, Mahler’s editing makes the music clearer and lighter, although I do wonder of Chailly could take a bit more time to linger - ever so slightly- over the details. He does drive the music forward an awful lot.

This is so great! Medtner was such a wonderfull pianist! He even got offer to record all of the Beethoven sonatas, unfortunatelly he recorded only this one.

7/10, No 1 is good. Surprisingly pretty controlled, impressive at that speed. No. 2 is also solid. Sucks that they broke the trend on No 3, totally should have slowed down and cooled down the frenzy a bit, pianist clearly bit off more than they could chew trying to play it that fast and loud.

Brings back old memories

Mahler's efforts to "enhance" all the Schumann symphonies are very interesting and well worth listening too. No 2 is no exception.

This concerto is wonderful, Garrick Ohlsson a unique interpreter. Only 5 likes... I am chocked. One should listen more to beautiful music!

Well, I've now heard the premiere under Charles Groves, the Aussie one under Andrew Penny and now this version...and, despite the excellent qualities of the other 2, I think, for me, this rendition just about comes first as my favourite. This splendid yet often stark and even bleak work reveals how much more there is to Arnold's work than film scores, Hoffnung concerts and English Dances. His chamber music for wind instruments merits attention, too.

Assuming this was recorded at the Philharmonic hall in Liverpool ( most RLPO recordings are ) this recording demonstrates very nicely the acoustics of the Hall.

Amazing how he manages to get this orchestra to sound just like his Clevelanders!
