Thinking about Why We Fight: Loving Humanity in it's Variation
Hi Friends,
It's been a tough demoralizing few years for many of us and I wanted to take some time this Labour Day to think about why we fight for a better world. I think that answer is going to be different for everyone, but here is mine, and it involves one of my favourite films.
If you want to make a video talking about your why, then please send me a link and I will add it to the playlist if I can.

This is a good question. I don't really know my answer - or maybe I know it, but I haven't thought about it enough to put it in words. What brought me to the fight in the first place was being in a position where I was treated badly and feeling helpless, like I couldn't do anything about it. Then, one day, I realized that maybe I can't make the people who hurt me change, but I can change the ways I've hurt other people. And once I started trying to see my world from an outsider's point of view, I realized that insider perspectives are very f*ked up and I want those perspectives to open up and change. It's interesting what you said about shame because I think a lot of people on the "inside" are ashamed of being human. Sometimes people say that non-marginalized people see marginalized people as animals, as not fully human, but I think they do see them as human, but they just hate human beings. They want to believe that they are superior to humanity and they don't have the same needs, wants, and irregularities that all humans do. They wind up cutting off their humanity to fit some ideal and they don't want be reminded that they are the same species as the people they despise. When people talk about "accepting yourself," I don't think it can be separated from having solidarity with marginalized people because accepting yourself means accepting that you are just as "disgusting" as the people you hate - which is actually not disgusting at all - if that makes sense.

I am struggling with my why. It’s complicated. As with most things, I came into advocacy in an atypical fashion. It was never really a choice. It was about survival and trying to build just enough wake to ease the journey for those behind me who came next; not because I’m important. Because from the time I could form words, I was “good with them” so it was the closest to protection I could get I’m good at advocacy because I’ve had to be not because that particular aspect work logistics and personal safety or things i enjoyed or was the filled by. I like information I love research. I love seeing people understand things I explain to them in ways they hadn’t considered before. I don’t love being expected to educate on command or justify my existence when I’m trying to get a cup of coffee, even if sometimes I need to ask for a cup with a larger handle for my own safety and use knowing my own needs & understanding how the needs of others work doesn’t mean I always want to be on call for the explanation. existence should not come with public entitlement to education or entertainment. Opportunities., if possible sure if they’re made as request not as command or expectation. There’s also the sword of Damocles, that is “you have to make people aware of people like you because they probably haven’t seen anyone like you before they may not again so be the best shiniest best version that you can.“ it’s exhausting I don’t have a public platform specifically because I have dealt with this kind of public entitlement my entire life. I’m tired. My image and my story has been used without my consent more times than I can list and if I push back, I’m told I don’t understand or appreciate “the greater good” most of the time I’ve come to realize the greater good is not always worth my harm. All being said I know I can never really stop. The best I can do is do my best to control the narrative around me and presented carefully and as effectively as I can. I want to help, but I need to be better at protecting myself. No one else is going to protect me. Advocacy isn’t always a deliberate choice but taking care of each other should be. In whatever way we can. We owe each other care. We don’t know anyone a performance. I don’t want awareness. I don’t want acceptance. I want respect. I want inclusion. I want bodily autonomy for everyone. There’s an old *slogan that disability community borrowed along time ago. “nothing about us without us“ that’s probably as close to why as I’m getting.

Parking spaces and curb cuts are not enough. I believe in what I call ‘outreach based engagement’ I will continue do all I can to help. But it’s not free to me. Even after the episode ended, I just sat there confused. I am glow in the dark white. Ancestry aside because it does not impact how the world views me, I present as fully white. It was not until I went online to look at reviews that I even considered white supremacy.

I think they set up a decent foundation in the first two seasons for this particular love story, but then fumbled the bag when it finally came down to it. They have a number of scenes in s2 where Colin and Penelope are speaking and connecting as friends, appreciating each other’s opinions and sharing inner thoughts. For some fans of this couple/s3, this was enough. To me, this was one of the ways the writing of the main story really suffered. I need to see *way* more to feel satisfied as a viewer. “Subtlety” for your main story line is not good writing. Subtlety should add layers, not require a viewer to watch with a magnifying glass to get what you’re trying to say. The main story and Colin’s arc were buried and that made me sad because I think it could have been really good. I do think there was more progression for Penelope than what is in this video BUT totally agree that at the end it is about everything being solved with confidence. I also completely agree about how they have reasoned diversity and race in the show. The makers keep explaining inaccuracies with saying it’s a “fantasy”. Then just make the racial diversity part of the fantasy of it instead of using terrible writing to explain the end of racism. Lady Jenevia recently did a video about how they should have gone the Brandy/Whitney Cinderella route so the casting could be truly inclusive. No explanation necessary. It just is. I wish they did that too. Another story that is prepared to do the work of what it could actually look like to undo racism can hopefully be written and then we can live in fantasy stories of what could have been had racism never existed.

I completely agree with your analysis!I’m getting so tired of being told I lack media literacy because I didn’t buy the “friends to lovers” arc for Penelope and Colin. There’s way too much telling and almost no showing in this show. I love the show in general so I was disappointed to see the writing take such a dip in quality. The costumes really didn’t do it for me either. There was so much potential which is why I’m frustrated!

In the book a part of Pen's glow up was losing a bunch of weight as well as changing her wardrobe. The unflattering dressing was clearly tied to her mother and tied to her mother's control issues and low opinion of Pen. I appreciate that, unlike the book the glow up didn't include weight loss, but dressing the way she felt good and that accentuated her. Don't disagree with you really. The world building has many issues, and the writing is lack lustre at best. But the wardrobe in the first two seasons was deliberate in regards to being unflattering and did have merit storytelling wise.

Fans of Bridgerton should expect and demand more. This was NOT a love story and to think it so says more about the lowered expectations our society now has, or perhaps how we now are satisfied with empty, or shallow relationships (as long as the s3x is good). Anyway... I truly enjoyed your take.

Part 2: Why I wasn’t completely mad at Nichola’s costuming in the first 2 seasons is because she was supposed to look terrible. A) the glow up thing. B) her mom overlooked her and constantly chose a color she hated and did not even consider putting her in something flattering. Her mom didn’t try to get to know her or listen to her and just chose the worst clothes for her. But she thought yellow was a happy color (in the books)and that is why she kept putting Penelope in them. Her clothes are also a way to show her lack of confidence at this point. Some of her design may be due to how Hollywood views plus sized characters, but I feel most of it is showing her storytelling. Season 3’s clothing is showing her new self-confidence and worth and her not caring what her mom says anymore.

  • @gabrielleduplessis7388

Part 1: First, I read the fourth book and fell in love with it so I was psyched for Penelope and Colin’s season and I did fall in love with part 1 and some of the storytelling, especially when I found out they were doing the eros and psyche story for them. But part 2 came around and I was severely disappointed. The essence of their relationship and story was gone. They were both being treated dirty. The new show runner of season 3 focused on her favorite characters and neglected the main couple in their own season. She ignored the book, ignored their story and development from the first two seasons and part 1 and jump cut to the storylines she wanted to focus on. It was insulting and both characters were treated dirty. The characters and Nichola and Luke deserved better.

"homeopathy Jane Austen" lmao As someone who *loves* mac and cheese from the box, I'm always excited when other people are down to enjoy some, but very much get it if they're not onboard. I love all the shallow nonsense of Bridgerton, but at the end of the day it *is* shallow nonsense, which is a shame with the talent they have available. I really loved the way you discussed Dumplin' as a contrasting story about love and confidence--I felt that Penelope's story was more about finding her voice in a world that erases and disregards her, but in a universe built around fanning bosoms and withering looks, it definitely got overshadowed by the "self-love will save you" angle. The implications this has for a fat woman needed to be explored (that loving yourself does not fix other people's prejudice), so thank you for that.

s3 of Bridgerton was felt jarring to watch. there was no mention of her fatness. there were suddenly other fat people on screen. it felt like they flipped a switch and decided that fat people get to participate in this fantasy where there's no oppression towards them. they reframed it as JUST being about her confidence and how she dressed and wore her hair. i also have to question how they decide who gets to participate in the fantasy. why do racism and fatphobia get the magic wand treatment, while queerphobia does not. i also struggle with this world being a vehicle for such fantasy, because the glaring issue of the problems that come with wealth inequality, let alone extreme wealth inequality. all of the servants are just happy to be there. they are just props, not people. again, who gets to participate in the fantasy and who doesn't, and how do the writers decide

"A tight lacing scene is bound of piss off any historical enthusiast" So true! I have made and worn both long and short regency stays and they are designed to push the bust up, not minimize the waist. What would be the point when the waistline of your dress is under the boobs? I don't think the tiny waist became a desirable thing until the late 1800s and most of that was an illusion achieved by padding. But I mostly do 18th century and regency costuming, so I'm not entirely sure when that started. Also, the real Queen Charlotte hated "empire waist" dresses so she insisted that every woman wear side hoops at court. This created one of the weirdest silhouettes in fashion history because women kept the waistline under the bust and just added side hoops. I have not seen Bridgerton (because I am a fashion history nerd and I wouldn't be able to get past the costumes) but now I understand why my mom loves it. This is a woman who said, "Why don't the people in Gaza just fix the place up and get on with their lives instead of blaming Israel for their problems?" The answer is: "Love" or "confidence" or "hard work and a good attitude" cannot fix structural problems!!!! But this is a comfortable narrative for people who want to pretend that everything is fine and if some people are not fine, it's because they aren't trying hard enough. It's unfortunate, but not entirely surprising, that Bridgerton supports this narrative. The concept of a diverse regency era is interesting and I appreciate that they're trying to be inclusive, but I agree with you - marginalized people deserve better stories.

This was the most thorough breakdown of why the love story of Penelope didn’t work this season. Thank you for giving words to the dissatisfaction felt this season.

Something you failed to mention is that when Willow and Xander actually had their situationship in Season 3, the fandom regarded it as wrong, given that Willow is obviously happy with Oz and Xander had Cordelia.

@@AMoniqueOcampo I didn’t want to spoil the whole arc, but yeah that’s one of those “giving the character what they thought they wanted when it’s no longer what they want”.

Loved this video! I didn't watch Bridgerton because I also get too annoyed about the inaccuracies (although from a much less educated standpoint than yours -- for me it's more like "that's not how it works in Jane Austen's books!"). I'm always grateful for your perspective, it is so educational and helpful to me. Also I think I already mentioned this but I love your top :)
